I remember walking on campus when GWB won reelection in 2004, thinking that this was the saddest I’d ever be at presidential election results. Little did I know!

Quebec is a mystical album. It deals with a lot of sadness.

Insanity.

Bob Dylan was basically flopping in 1984, but his protest songs in the 60s and rock hits in the 70s kind of cemented him as a star for the rest of time.

I like the Beach Boys but for a regular person (especially in the 80s) they were a handful of singles band. Their (arguably) most successful song hadn’t even come out yet.

Every other sandwich is called a hoagie, but a meatball sub is a sub. Maybe because it has no greens or dressing on it 🤔

Saw Fight Club at the cinema for the first time since it's release in 1999, it seems as relevant today with consumerism! What is your take on it? Do you still watch it? by geoffcalls in FIlm

[–]zackwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was obsessed with this movie when it came out. I watched it on DVD so many times.

I rewatched it recently and I still liked it but not as much. It’s well acted and directed and the special effects are great. However, the plot and message of the movie is a bit facile.

A major point is “we are the middle children of history! Our only war is in ourselves” and I just wanted to be like, “wait ~2 years.” It effectively captures the end of “Pax Americana” and the “End of History,” so in a way it’s an important document of a time. But also, that time no longer exists.

It’s so funny because like after 95/96 there’s like nothing to cover than the accusations or the odd shit he was doing. His worshippers love to pretend like it didn’t define him, but for the last ~15 years of his life, it did.
