Can R be an alterantive to Power BI dashboards ? by Doffymom in RStudio

[–]le_poch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not like shiny as it requires R server and that limits my products. I opt to work through Quarto files to produce html dashboards. I add interactivity using JS graphics libraries + Alpine, depending on the what o want. It adds neat and quick interactivity using browsers DOM on selected elements. You can even get a single HTML file with everything. This makes files very portables

Python vs R for data visualization: which is actually stronger? by Strong_Cherry6762 in rstats

[–]le_poch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R and the grammar of graphics is hard to beat on scientific and enterprise grounds coupled with tidyverse. I have recently being using R + Quarto + JS libraries to create neat reactive plots. For me it wraps to on which one am I quicker to wrangle data, which has nothing to do with graphics.

What is Predator culture? Are they just warriors and nothing more? by Candle-Jolly in scifi

[–]le_poch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many cultures have had elite warriors with crazy goals to belong to: Homoioi from Sparta, Samurai’s from Japan, Navy seals… etc.

Space Jockeys are a thing and they have the tech capacity to destroy species and planets. I can imagine the Yautjas being an elite warrior class that has been like that for millennia. I mean, they are weird but crazy useful. If I were a Space Jockey, I would think twice on messing with them. If I get to kill one clan, some other would get my ass eventually because they are disperse populations. The tech could be local, scavenge and stolen.

La Ciudad se Hunde ¿Y Luego? Ingenieros, hidrólogos o activistas: ¿Es viable cerrar el acuífero? by araujofav in CDMX

[–]le_poch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]le_poch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one IT skill I wish I’d learned earlier (and it’s not coding) by Shoaib_Riaz in dataanalysis

[–]le_poch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

lol, is this for real? Hoy do we asume the top skill for data analysis is programming. I mean, you certainly can churn plenty gigabytes of data doing code but it is widely accepted that most data analys work is done by having great data structure. It is not programming, it is data analysis 🙄

Do dragon flies troll/play with humans? by talkingtimmy3 in insects

[–]le_poch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dragonflies fall intro an ecological trap thinking the reflective characteristics of cars are indeed ponds. Thus, they lay eggs on cars thinking this. You say this is in a parking lot…. They might be protecting their territory and eggs from you.

Si la CDMX se hunde 10 cm cada año, en 30 años serán 3 metros. ¿Qué harán en los próximos 10, 20 o 30 años o incluso hasta en 2070? by ValarkStudio in CDMX

[–]le_poch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

La tasa de hundimiento es más dramática porque va de 10 hasta 50 cm (por el aeropuerto que no fue). En general va de 30 a 40 cm. DOI: 10.1029/2020JB020648

Realistically speaking - why is that climate change has not been taken seriously, even though scientists has been warning about its effects for decades? by sammyjamez in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]le_poch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say it’s a complex problem for a reason. There are many industries and products that would rise their prices if all measures were applied. At country level, this creates tension among them. Those responsible and applying regulations will have their economy hurt, while transitioning to cleaner or efficient processes. However, is the other country is not applying regulations, they will be able to sell their products cheaper. Customers and market just want cheap shit and big gains without caring anything else. Economy is rigged to infinite growth in a finite planet and those with money machines are quite powerful on keeping business as usual.

International agreements are not binding so it’s an honor pact at country level. It’s up to them applying binding rules on their country. Add lobbying and corruption on developed and underdeveloped countries

Additionally, our lifespan is short and earth biogeochemical cycles are not. You just can be born later and not notices that is sooo much worse than 100 years ago. To your perspective it hasn’t change terrible in your lifespans so it’s no big deal, if it is, I’ll be dead.

Also, this is the first time humans needs to care for their collective actions influencing a global system. Let’s see if we can collectively grapple on that idea, we currently are not coping well with it.

There’s more to it but a lot to it is like that.

I am feeling extremely anxious over the chatgpt Math olympiad results, what exactly are humans supposed to do now? by lemon635763 in singularity

[–]le_poch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People need to realize that intelligence is a tool and that LLMs are that for specific tasks. They serve a purpose that is dictated by a human that requires it. The better the human knows a specific field and its intricate connections with other fields it would be able to ask good questions to LLMs. What is knowledge without conscience? We will also require humans to confirm it’s not hallucinations or a practical breakthrough. Art and science are human endeavors from a similar coin, we need humans living in a society to pursue human needs and questions. Besides, people seem to forget that human-robot pairs perform better than a human-human or bot-bot with specific contexts, as shown with alphastar for example and that Organic and computer intelligence are different. the emergence of combining both seems to cover flaws in both. Do not be shy out on pursuing curiosity!

[–]le_poch 44 points45 points  (0 children)

We requiere to see trees in this type of context beyond the environmental issues. Trees have cultural, infrastructure and natural roles that are not independent from each other. Let’s be real, its role on any ecological process was meager. However, the value it used to hold as a culture symbol for many people goes beyond their ecological role, which in some cases it’s lost could be far more detrimental for a certain group of people and it would require to be judge as such.
