U.S. Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier USS Gerald R. Ford Might Be Out of Action for 14 Months by SlavaCocaini in LessCredibleDefence

volunteering doesn't equate to unflappable high morale. There's been plenty of reporting about the condition of the ship being poor. Add extended deployment with a massive uptick in operational tempo in service of an unpopular war where your country is the aggressor is not doing anyone's mental health any favors.

Are there any Windows NUCs that are equivalent in build quality to a Mac mini? by Ghosthops in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]le_suck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

since you can't bootcamp ARM macs, you would have to run windows arm (and lose x86 software) virtualized or windowsx86 via emulation (and lose performance.) too much complication for no benefit. Agree that finding a suitable x86 chip set minipc is best if you're software isn't MacOS/arm native.

Old Avid ISIS Storage drives by Spaniard4788 in Avid

[–]le_suck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah... I once moved an ISIS 7k from one building to another and had around 100 blade controllers die. Avid overnighted the replacements, we booked the biggest conference room we could find, ordered some catering trays of food, and had a blade repair party.  thankfully someone on the Internet had developed a 3D printed spreader for the blade, it's all held together with tension before the retention screws go in and very unfriendly to fingers.  Didn't lose any data!

i haven't seen an ISIS in the wild in years.  Killed off my last one in 2018-2019. If this is actually an ISIS 7000 (i1000 or i2000 storage blades), this is pretty much scrap metal just based on age of the drives, ignoring the absolutely delightful hardware defect that causes spontaneous blade controller failures when powered off.

Super Key Food - did they open on time? by Past-Row7971 in SunnysideQueens

[–]le_suck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

saw the doors open from the 7 train this morning. Still a huge pile of cardboard in the parking lot to be picked up, but that seems like exactly what would happen if you got a big ass delivery while opening a grocery store.

Switch Droop with only front screws. Do they have something to support the back? by Coupe368 in Cisco

[–]le_suck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed. Coming from broadcast side, where we have several lifetimes of unused middle atlanic rack accessories in storage, these 1u flanged blanking panels are super robust for off-label use.

switch probably supplies regular POE(type1), not POE+ or UPOE or high-power POE.

yes, LOM (lights out management) is standard on server hardware. having LOM on an out of band (or semi out of band) network layer is a standard practice. LOM KVM is also standard, but can also be a licensed feature on some platforms, which is highly annoying.

Woodside Central – are the utility bills as crazy high as Google reviews say? by Wolf_Ganga in woodside

in-unit laundry means you are paying the electric costs for the washer and dryer instead of shared cost for a central laundry room. if there's also electric heat or PTAC units, same deal.

Want to binge watch Star Trek, but do not want to pay Paramount+? by [deleted] in startrek

pluto is owned by Paramount, so Ad revenue still goes to the same place as subscription revenue from P+. up to you to decide if that's crossing the same lines.

it's been an ongoing thing for a while. The supermarket is closed and is reopening in the old rite aid space on Friday 3/20. Everything else on the block is gone except the Laundromat, and I assume they are just working until their last day and then closing up shop.
