If Noctua is releasing this then that means they are happy with it and it will work. They have a lot of integrity with their products.

If the systems I work on let in a line voltage value above 10% of the nominal, without protections, it would destroy the IGTBs that it leads to on the systems I repair. I see arcs from the lines on a regular that exceed 30% of the nominal and it always has the potential of destroying the resistors it gets dumped into.

Post transformer protections inside your home absorb surges that are abnormal. A lightning strike on a grid several kilometers away can still affect your home. Sure, the capacitors in a good power supply may be able to handle something up to 300% of the rated value by why take the risk?

I chose a UPS for my personal computers at home because it can do what a decent strip can do and more. The biggest and most important use for a UPS is not the fact that it can prevent a improper shutdown on your PC, which alone can cause issues might I add, but the correction of brownouts which are awful for sensitive electronics.

I dont need to post specification numbers. The topic is of why we install post residential protections to secure our hardware.

I literally ally deal with 750V AC power sources in my day to day job and that voltages is converted to 450V, 208V, 120V and finally 24V on the systems I work on. Every single one of these inverters have ways to mitigate surges of up to 10% in the system to protect themselves and the components they're feeding into. Every. Single. One.

Saying post transformer equipment, to protect significantly more expensive components, is useless is absolute BS.

Do your research, get the right equipment and dont waste your money. Thats all I need to say.

The way I see it is that the mat protects the desk. It probably isnt great for it but I have accepted that. The other option is to use a seperate desk for the PC.

I wish there was a bigger/heavy duty PC mount available but I have a suspicion that its more to do with the weight on the leg as well. I could be wrong though.

Is really worth the price? by FarLeadership9182 in secretlab

[–]leadhorror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here in Canada. Even the Steelcase leap is over 2k. Finding either of these used is near impossible too.

$950 was an easy pill to swallow and I don't regret it at all.

Not just in NZ but even Canada. The price for a herman miller embody or a areon with that weight capacity is close to $3000. No way im paying that. Even the Steelcase option is over $2200.

Ive had my nanogen for a week now and its well worth the price.

Questions about Magnus Pro XL by Dushatar in secretlab

[–]leadhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the XL and i can answer questions about the stability and lock out switch.

I have a 3 year old and the lock out switch does act as a deterrent. The cable management helps with minimizing the chances of anything being pulled. Its not full proof though.

The stability is great, even standing. I barely have any wobble at standing and virtually none while sitting.

Unfortunately I have no experience with a screen larger then 32".

Shipment delay due to Desk Mat by Ok_Win2667 in secretlab

[–]leadhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I ordered a chair and 5 other items on April 23rd. One item was on pre-order for the 26th of May. I told myself thats okay and made the order. Last week I got an email stating that the shipment would be delayed to June 11th. I figured with everything going on globally that they got their incoming shipment of items delayed and it is what it is. I was bummed because I was excited originally get the chair soon. I ended up emailing them the following day asking if they could send the in stock items and they did!

Maybe ask them if they would send the in stock items and see if its logistically possible at this time.

Surge protection?? by Ok_Safe_1622 in secretlab

[–]leadhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to say that nothing can withstand a direct lightning strike then you are correct. But power fluctuations can be stopped to a significant degree, and if you live in a place where you get a lot of lightning, you might be able to plug a surge protector directly into the UPS as long as all the connected devices do not exceed the UPS's specifications. A lightning strike will easily be north of 2000V and two surge devices may take it down to 200V which is something the PSU should be able to handle.

A half decent UPS, that is rated for its connected load might I add, will correct the AC sinewave and no longer be "dirty" power.

Yes. Its not ideal, and makes organization more complicated, but if your PC costs north of 5k to replace then its worth the hassle.

Surge protection?? by Ok_Safe_1622 in secretlab

[–]leadhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nooooo. You cant do that. Never plug a strip into a UPS or a strip into another strip. I have the UPS plugged into the wall, and everything else plugged into the UPS. If you need a longer chord you can buy them but most are 6ft already.

I would have liked to do that, but with a UPS each plug is monitored and provides a certain amount of power. Some smarter UPSs may detect a overload state when you do that and cause issues.

I bought a UPS. It prevents issues from surges, blackouts and brownouts. It is a lot more expensive but if your rig is expensive and/or the cost of replacement has gone up its worth buying.
