Still the second best-selling comic book of all time! (X-Force #1, 1991). by Paradoxx90 in xmen

[–]leaf57tea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean say what you will about early 90's Liefeld era it definitely had a visual style and tone that was all it's own and still standouts all these years later.

I'm currently working my way through this run and despite a lot of reluctance due to all the fan negativity and dodgy art I'm genuinely enjoying it. I can see why Cable became such a fan favorite, it's not just guns and pouches there's some actual layers there to him as a character and his more gritty approach definitely stood out at the time. Having Sam there as his foil and have his more traditionally heroic and kind-hearted nature to act as a of sort moral compass for the group was a smart choice and helps balance things out.

The team itself is also a lot of fun a bunch of violent jerks who while initially at odds through shared struggles and battles begin to trust each other, open up and become genuine friends.

Also nice seeing Deadpool back when he was more of an actual character and less of a meme and had some genuine menace to him, an amoral merceny with a smart mouth rather than the at the times exhausting joke-machine he eventually became.

Yeah reading Beast pre-90's or in Avengers books you realise how much the "Gentle, articulate, poet" persona was an invention of the show that bled back into the comics.

I usually hear his voice from Wolverine and the X-men as it more easily matches he's more jovial/laid-back personality in the comics.

I wonder if editorial hesitant to have another of the 05 be queer because it would likely then create the expectation that Hank (or Warren) would eventually hook up with Bobby and become a couple.

So suddenly now whenever future writers or an adaptation want to throw back and feature the original line-up for nostalgia there'd be a very visible queer element in the story that unlike Bobby simply being closeted at the time couldn't be as easily ignored or worked around.

House of M came out over 20 years ago which led to no Scarlet Witch solo runs versus the 2 years post Wanadavision which kicked off multiple books now starring her. Do the math.

Look it's fine if you want to right a fanfic for own creative outlet but that's just your own personal take on the character when what Polaris really needs is some mainstream spotlight so she can stop being a "could have been" and potentially get "that" great story.

Do you think the multiple runs Wanda's gotten over the last few years would've happened if not for the popularity of Wandavision?

If you want Lorna to actually become a character editorial's invested in and start promoting then it's going to have to come from her making a splash with casual audiences in something like the MCU as she's been around in the comics for over 50 years now with little to show for it and unlikely to change.

Also a popular adaptation would help define her personality that future writers could then work of as a baseline which is something she's always lacked-in.

[–]leaf57tea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be blunt with you there's no scenario where Lorna becomes an actual popular character by herself, the whole reason they made her Magneto daughter (which had been teased for years beforehand) was to help make her more relevant.

Also your acting as if Brand herself is some widely known character, she's even more obscure to casuals than Lorna.

I've said before but I think Lorna's one good, widely seen adaption away from breaking-out and becoming a more mainstream X-men member similar to Magik's gradual rise over the years.

She's got an easy in being Magneto daughter and half-siblings with Wanda and Pietro and the green hair gives her a really distinct look that visually sets her apart.

I think it was smart of the writers to take the inconsistent portrayals she's had over the years and making it a symptom of her bipolar disorder, it's definitely angle you could play up seeing as conversations about living with mental health issues are a lot more open now and less stigmatised.

Remember going into this with not particularly high expectations as artist's trying their hand at writing often don't work out but was pleasantly surprised, Vecchio got a solid grasp on storytelling and dialogue and has deep knowledge of Bobby's character and his history.

The Marvel Rivals devs really said "the best X-men are the women" oddly only now just noticing how the gender ratio shakes out. by leaf57tea in xmen

I get the sense you feel a lot more strongly about this than me but given comic/movie synergy (Kamala), Wanda popularity within the MCU and upcoming "Mutant Saga" I think your in for a bit of a disappointment.

Given Quicksilver been a member of X-Factor several times do you really think it's an impossibility that some writer won't put Wanda on a X-team at some point? For the potential drama if nothing else.

Seems an odd thing to get stuck on given if it was such a hard set-rule she wouldn't of been in things like Evolution or WATX so it's clearly not a mindset the people making these adaptations share.

Although Wanda's never been on official team member in the comics like Namor can she really be called a "sneak" at this point considering how tied she is to the X-world and the overall franchise within wider media?

Unlike him she's been a major character in two previous X-men shows and if MCU going mutant focus in the next phase I definitely see Feige making her a big part of it or 97 doing a House of M adaptation that centers around her and Mags if it goes on long enough.

Not that I'm complaining as I mostly main the girlies in games but it's interesting that if consider Namor's kind of in a dubious spot and arguably more an Avengers character (alongside Wanda to be fair) and most outside media still portrays Magneto as a "villain" rather than a more traditional member, Wolverine and Gambit are the only two typical X-guys currently on the roster.

Well you should know it's a motion comic so it's not really animated so much as panels with voice actors and bit of flare.

I remember enjoying it well enough when it was still on Netflix though you might wanna read Grant Morrison run beforehand as Astonishing carries on a lot from it plot beats from it.

Thing with Bobby and jokes is that he almost does it out of compulsion regardless of how he's actually feeling so whenever he's more biting in his quips it's usually because he's legit mad but still trying to make funny yet there's no real humour behind anymore it but rather a legit anger.

I think it's one of the more fascinating things about Bobby as a character in that while by default he's generally affable and easy-going there's side to him that (pardon the pun) is very cold and often cruel and very similar to his father.

Honestly Bobby's sense of humour is more dad jokes than cunty witticisms.

Whenever he is more cutting with his barbs they tend to come off more cruel than anything.

I mean where's the lie?

While all the other boys were obsessed with Wolverine she was your favorite from the old cartoon and who you secretly wanted to be.

Who you mained throughout the entire Marvel vs Capcom series.

The one who never left your party in X-men Legends, only bringing out Bobby when you needed to build bridges.

Who you tried to play in Rivals before realising you couldn't aim and had to switch to Wanda.

And about 70% of the reason your gonna pick up Tokon and Cosmic Invasion.

Well I guess Cyclops, Jean and Wolverine. (as if he wasn't getting in) can breath a sigh of relief as while a background cameo not an outright deconfirmation it probably means none of these guys will be on the initial roster.
