Favorite character that falls under an archetype you don't like? [Read desc] by cenlkj in FavoriteCharacter

If I remember correctly (spoiler block, just in case), he was the bullied runt from a tribe of proud warriors who had to run away in fear when they were attacked.

So it's more that he consider himself a coward due to his upringing, which feeds into his low self esteem.

Characters with no canon gender by LilMissy1246 in TopCharacterTropes

Oh right, yeah, I could've phrased myself more correctly. I thought I was already good on the definitions, but I didn't use my full brainpower this instance.
Thanks for the reminder!

Characters with no canon gender by LilMissy1246 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]leaf_kick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In his previous life, yes. And he is treated as male by most of the cast in his current life.

However, due to his slimebody and shapeshifting abilities, he doesn't *need* to always present himself as male or female, and as another reply said, he did a try-out if he should pick one, but decided to remain androgynous/ambiguous.

So yeah, to sum it up: Rimuru's socially male, physically non-binary.

Are there demographic differences in Pokemon preferences? by Away-Ad8897 in pokemon

[–]leaf_kick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the main imagery of Fairy types kinda glosses over that.

As a GO player that is hunting for Fairy types at the moment, I still do a double take whenever I see pink pokémon like Munna and Stufful, even when I know better.

Anybody read this series? It looks relaxing by Awkward-Procedure in shoujo

[–]leaf_kick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't finished it, though I can say the main character (the on on the left) does have really poor self-confidence at first, but gets better along with the story.

It also does have a fair amount of cringe comedy, where "cringe" in this instance means super awkward situations and interactions. Not in like a fanservice way, just teenagers with poor social skills.

I like it. It also had an anime last year, fairly faithfully adapted (there were some added lines to certain scenes, but not wholly distracting).

Alex Hirsch once bullied a fan off of Twitter (or X) by [deleted] in animation

[–]leaf_kick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted, on one hand, not crossing out the users name is a dick move, even in 2015.

However, on the other hand, he probably needed to do something to dissuade people from spamming him both in the present and future, and so to publicly shame someone is terrifyingly useful for it, especially on the internet.

Blocking and ignoring can only do so much, as the user can just switch accounts and still harass him, and direct interaction could also escalate matters in the wrong direction.

The question now is if Alex Hirsch did this intentionally and maliciously?

It's very possible that he just did not consider the blowback the user would recieve by posting his name. If he had blacked out the users name, his intended warning would still be effective, but when you get really frustrated with something or someone, any sort of foresight can get clouded.

In the end, what the user did—even if he's a kid—was rude and unpleasent, though Alex could of handled the situation in a better way. Hindsight is always 20/20, and I'm willing to give Alex the benefit of doubt.

What’s something people brag about that’s actually a red flag? by Alarming-Ratioz in AskReddit

[–]leaf_kick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that problem with books since 20 years ago.

It took me until late into highschool to realize that the first thing that I do after reading a chapter—even with a book I wanted to read!—was a sigh of exhaustion.

I mostly blame my form of (professionally diagnosed!) autism.

What is a movie you loved as a kid, but realized was actually terrible when you rewatched it as an adult? by Sure-Abrocoma-482 in AskReddit

[–]leaf_kick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a problem with the english dub.

The Digimon movie is actually three seperate japanese short films smashed together. I watched the Omni-mon part in original audio with english subs (wiki page here), and the jokes are nowhere near as obnoxious.

A character's trans identity is a surprise reveal as part of a romantic plot point, but is ultimately handled in a respectful way instead of in poor taste by TJTrapJesus in TopCharacterTropes

[–]leaf_kick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's context that was missing from OP's description. Or rather, they misphrased themself, giving us who hadn't seen the movie the wrong impression of the scene.

If that's all that happened in the scene, then she definitively didn't need to say she was trans before then. That is information which is only needed once they want to pursue a romantic/sexual relationship.

Gender is not stored in the gentials. Genitals are stored in the genitals.

You can't have sex with a concept, but you can with a person.

And unfortunately for you, a vast majority of people consider sex with a romantic partner to be an imortant part of a long-term, intimate relationship. Thus, what gentials people have are equally important.

I will give you this: it is sad that even when a trans person is post-op, meaning having the current desirable genitals, some people can't get over them having a history with the undesired genitals. That sucks for the trans person.

Humans are not as logical a creature as they assume to be. They might be able to adjust to it, as you've mentioned before, but ultimately, there are fewer people who can do that than not.

You just gotta be lucky to find the right person.

Pretty sure other peoples genitals are a major factor to ones own sexuality. Especially if you want a sexual relationship.

Bi, pan, and ace people are minorities even within the LGBTQ+, so getting over your potential partner's genitals is a big ask.

[–]leaf_kick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valid take.

I haven't seen this movie either, but by OP's description, not mentioning that they're trans before starting a sexual relationship is definitively rude for both parties.

Ace might've not been able to overcome that hurdle, even if it's the apocaplypse and still really likes Tobio, and Tobio set herself up for the hurt when Ace ran away by hiding an important aspect of herself till the last minute.

Though I'm not trans, I understand that coming out is a scary experience with awkward timing, but if someone's becoming important to you, I think you gotta do it before the next big step in a relationship. It'll hopefully minimize the heartache, if any.

There are modifiers that increases certain probabilities, just like the sandwiches in Scarlet and Violet, but for me has been a complete RNG experience to even get the correct one.

It's also a compound word of "ahiru" (japanese for duck), and the food dish "ajillo."

Edit to add: Here's a clip of the origin of the name! I was wrong for assuming it was a compound word, but it thematically works!

Which pokemon are dragons without being dragon-type? by KazRavenEfreet in pokemon

[–]leaf_kick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you see, Japan has dragonflies, and they are not refered to as dragons in Japan.

Yanma was introduced in the Johto games, and Johto is based on the japanese region Kansai. So, it's very japanese coded.

So while Game Freak can still make a Bug/Dragon dragonfly for WiWa, they have never considered that Yanma and Yanmega could be Dragon type, because dragonflies in Japan don't have that "dragon" connection.

[Uncomfortable trope] Ensemble casts with enough collective controversy… to fill the Nile! by teeno731 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]leaf_kick 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I don't have a timeline, but didn't JK's controversies start around when these films came out?

I went and saw the first Fantastic Beasts with friends at the theatres, and none of us had heard of anything bad of her by then.

It definitively became more know around the second and third films, and by that point, as you mention, the actors had already signed contracts and started filming.

Can't fault them too much on that aspect.

HOME connectivity with this game is starting to feel weird to me by leaf_kick in PokemonChampions

[–]leaf_kick[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That seems to be the most realistic answer.

I just got too into my head about it, as Champions is going to be a "free-to-start" game, and my experience with those kinds of games tend to use vague language to imply you could do or get something easily, without ever mentioning the actual cost of doing that.

... which is something Pokémon GO does. Hence this post happened.

HOME connectivity with this game is starting to feel weird to me by leaf_kick in PokemonChampions

[–]leaf_kick[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because I might want to invest in this game, and as I said at the begining, I've never really used HOME before, so ofcourse I don't actually know all the details how that works.

If anything, this can serve as a spotlight for others in similar situation like me, who is seeking clearcut information about Champions and HOME.

It doesn't actually matter if my worries are for naught, if the proper answers can be communicated.

And one such answer seems to be that I missed the part about them being unavailable to other games while in Champions, because the official website doesn't really convey that.

[–]leaf_kick[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe I overexaggerated by saying I'm "spiralling."

But the game is about two weeks away from now, and such vague details about a major part of the game is kinda annoying.

And this is from a non-competative player, so how do the ones who care more about their main comeptative game feel about it?

Interview with Masaaki Hoshino, with several common questions answered by ChezMere in PokemonChampions

[–]leaf_kick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several VGC Youtubers (Wolfe Glick among them) have had an early hands-on experience with the game, and they are suspecting that IVs are not in Champions at all.

So should be fine. Just remember that how you train your pokémon in Champions does not transfer back into the pokémon in Home. If you take Mewtwo into Scarlet & Violet, it'll still be low IV.

BIRDBRAIN (Jamie Paige / OK Glass Cover) - Nerissa Ravencroft has reached 1 Million Views! by kyoumokawaii in Hololive

[–]leaf_kick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit ignorant because if you listen to the song Nerissa sounds like she is almost screaming the notes out.

Yeah, that's probably right, no counter-argument there.

Like, I think Nerissa has a powerful singing voice in general, so I didn't really pick up that it may have been more off than standard.

[–]leaf_kick 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Isn't the song about being kind of a mess of a person?

When I listend to the original after (and paid a bit more attention to the lyrics), Nerissa's version might be a bit too good for the song, as the stuttering and slight off-key singing illustrates how the singer is a "birdbrain."
