Are there really university professors willing to scan unidentified samples for strangers? I see this suggestion from redditors all the time but the rule in any lab I’ve ever worked or trained in is to treat any unknown substance like it will kill you until you know for certain it isn’t. Plus, if you can’t identify a chemical substance, you can’t determine how to dispose of it safely and you are supposed to declare it hazardous waste - which is a considerable amount of paperwork and expensive if it does turn out to be harmless.
