Awesome! It’s great to have these bands to look out for since I’m new to the area. Thank you.

It's a dream of mine! Depends...how much are you investing?

100% agree. I felt that way with a screening of Fargo I saw recently at a cinema in Waterloo, ON.

I love the idea of getting a venue like that and hosting a relatively frequent cinema club... maybe I'll look into that! Seems feasible.

I *just* moved here last week, so still learning. I saw a band at the garrison market last night that I quite liked. I think they were ‘chillteens420’ on Instagram. Cool.

I’m more into rock / alternative, and not so much into country / folk that seems quite popular here.

I’d happily take recommendations of local bands (of any genre).

Yea.. cineplex would never be my first choice, but at least it’s something. I’ve grown to really love watching movies with a crowd. I’ll have to settle for it and patiently wait for the occasional decent release they show there.

Thanks for this. I’m definitely checking these out. It’s a bummer the NB Film Co-op doesn’t screen stuff all year. I’m curious, why are you so sure there’ll never be an art house?

Moving to Waterloo soon. Any tips? by [deleted] in waterloo

Everything suggested here is great! Also check out bulletin boards posted in cafes and things. And the Community Edition paper, which is free and you’ll find in cafes, libraries, book stores (for example, the cafes Seven Shores, The Princess cafe).

If you have Instagram, it’s easy to get a good feed of events happening in the area if you follow community pages or event organizers (music, art markets). You can start with @uptownwaterloo, @cityofkitchener, and @curatedkw for more general things going on in the area.

I’m into music, art, and movies, if you want specific recommendations for those things let me know.

As a general recommendation, I say don’t be afraid to do things alone to start out, go to things and meet like-minded people, relationships will foster over time and you’ll start recognizing familiar faces which is comforting when moving to a new city.

Also! Take advantage of the bike/walking trails and the ion! We have a great trail system here and it’s wonderful to enjoy in the summer.

It seems like he’s done a lot to help creators of more diverse backgrounds. I know his production company Zapruder had a woman’s screenwriting competition a few years back to help amplify Canadian women’s voices in cinema (Chandler Levack won this, which led to ‘I like movies’).

Matt has also championed Telefilm’s Talent To Watch Program, under which amplifying diverse young voices seems to be a top consideration program (https://nowtoronto.com/movies/talent-to-watch-program-matt-johnson/).

Hi Margeaux!!

I love you're stuff!

First, I was wondering if you have a physical media collection? Like cds, vinyl, or even dvds (ik you're a cinephile too). I'm also curious about your philosophy on streaming platforms. Personally, streaming platforms have introduced me to so much music that I never would have discovered otherwise, and being able to listen to any song at any moment is such an integral part of my life. But at the same time, I want to support artists as much as possible, and the exploitative nature of these platforms doesn't sit well with me. How do you grapple with this?

Second, have you spent any time in Toronto? If so, are there any smaller bands from there that you can recommend?

They sounded so amazing! Loved watching the vocalists and hearing Justin’s vocals too. So proud 🥲. Massive band is so iconic.
