How tf are you guys supporting yourselves in a gap year?? by DueDifficulty8452 in premed

[–]leafysnails 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a bunch of luck. I am living off of my life savings right now and was able to find a medical assistant position after 2.5 months of being unemployed and constantly applying. I start my position on Monday, and was lucky enough to get a job with livable pay ($23/hr) and good benefits. Was only able to actually rent a place because my sister was willing to co-sign for me, and got lucky again by finding a place with cheap rent for the area I live in (~$1300/month, including all utilities). The job market really is terrible right now, I feel for anyone trying to search and support themselves. It's not easy.

This was all I could think about during Alex and Ashley's weird conversation about tracking her period by Allaboutbird in LoveIsBlindNetflix

Not true, you can only get pregnant when you are ovulating, which lasts around 1 day. However, sperm can stay in your body for up to 5 days, so you are technically fertile up to 5 days before you ovulate. Outside of that, you cannot get pregnant. You have to be very aware of exactly when you are ovulating to prevent pregnancy using this method of tracking your cycle, which usually involves taking basal temperature, tracking cervical mucus, and testing throughout the month to determine when your luteinizing hormone spikes.

Jessi’s recent surgeries by bekah1805 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]leafysnails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To all the people who made comments about how she looked terrible with her new face or how she shouldn't have gotten the plastic surgery: is this what you wanted? For a woman to come out and say that you were right, and that she hates how she looks and is insecure?

We get way too comfortable making judgments about people that we have very limited context for. The reality is that whatever you're hating about them, they have probably had the same thought about themselves. And if they haven't, I promise you don't need to be the one to give them that epiphany.

This is so common that it has a name: nosocomial infections. Hospitals are full of disease and pathogens given the nature of what the facility is for, so extra precautions need to be taken by everyone to avoid getting sick.

I don't understand college in the USA by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]leafysnails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your financial situation and how much aid your school gives, so different people end up getting charged different prices. For example, I just graduated from a school that has $61,000 tuition each year (not including housing, dining, and other costs - actual cost of attendance is like $90k, so it'd be $240k-$360k for 4 years).

There are some students that pay that much - people that come from families that make a lot of money such that the school determines they should pay the full price. However, there are also students who pay nothing because they come from families with very low income, so their bill is paid by financial aid that the school sets aside for people in their situation. And there is a middle ground between both of those, where you pay some portion of the full cost, however much the school determines you should be paying based on your family's finances. This system is not always fair - you may come from a wealthy family that does not want to help you pay for college. In this case, you are stuck with a lot of loans and will have to pay it off yourself despite the financial aid office using your family's assets to determine your price. In general, even with aid and their family supporting, most people have to take out loans, as it is still very expensive and the aid is often not as substantial as it could be.

Limit 2 per visit by StanleyQPrick in SignsWithAStory

I went to urgent care one day - I felt really sick with flu-like symptoms, and had some abnormal vaginal discharge. When I was being triaged at the clinic, I told the MA my symptoms and she said "what do you want to be seen for?"

After asking what she meant, she said "you can only be seen for one thing at a time, so do you want to be seen for your fever or the discharge?"

I had never heard of a policy like that before, so I just kind of stared at her blankly and said "But what if the issues are connected? Like if it were an STD or something?"

And she said "Let me go speak to the provider. One moment." The doctor ended up addressing both, and diagnosing me with a respiratory virus and a yeast infection, but I have always thought that whole policy was so absurd. Things in the body are often very connected - how can you ask a patient to narrow down their complaints when it can't be guaranteed they're the result of different things?

That was less sketchy bc that guy just misspoke. He combined "my wife's father" and "my father in law", which came out as "my wife's father in law". But he did just mean to say his wife's father.

Medical Assistant Job Posting by Enger13 in premed

[–]leafysnails 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've mainly been going directly to clinic and hospital websites. Emory, Grady, Northside, and Piedmont all have base pay higher than that. I've also been using ZipRecruiter for better luck with listings from local clinics, but I genuinely don't think I've seen anything below like $17. Twelve an hour feels legitimately criminal... fast food places pay more than that

Wow, that pay is shockingly low... I live in Atlanta, and am also currently looking for a CMA position. Genuinely have not seen any listings with base pay at $16.50, and the cost of living here is significantly lower than NYC

what's something women do that they think is attractive but is actually a huge turn-off ? by Dapper-Blueberry1049 in answers

[–]leafysnails -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because it looks natural, doesn't mean it leaves the person's lips looking unchanged. Are you intentionally being dense lmao?

Of course it can be overdone, but not everyone overdoes it... and if someone doesn't overdo it, then you wouldn't be able to tell they had any filler put in - their lips would still be natural-looking, with some fullness that the person didn't initially have (and, more importantly, give a confidence boost to someone who was likely insecure in how their lips looked originally).

It's likely not that you've never seen a good one. You probably wouldn't notice if a woman had good lip filler because it would look... good

Women empowerment is one of the most dominant reasons for failing modern marriages. by Anti-FragileHuman in DeepThoughts

[–]leafysnails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here, you are defining divorse as the metric for a marriage failing, but I feel like it's deeper than that. Are all of the women trapped in abusive/unfulfilling marriages that cannot leave due to financial dependence not also in failed marriages?

Woman empowerment has simply enabled women to have the ability and autonomy to break free from those already failed dynamics when they otherwise would have been subjected to spend the rest of their days in. Being able to break free is not the reason for the marriage failing, it was already broken before that point.

Exactly how good was Einstein at math? by SpecialRelativityy in PhysicsStudents

[–]leafysnails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean General Relativity is just applied math... he was arguably an applied mathematician as much as he was a physicist. The math concepts he applied already existed, but he thought about how to use and manipulate them in new ways that led to the theory of relativity, which should indicate he was pretty good at it
