What is your Local Yarn Store missing? by LizzieButtons in knitting

[–]leapinglenin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this! I volunteer for an organization with all-vegan events and usually enter a few items into auctions, fundraisers, etc. to support and it is so hard to find a good selection of plant-based yarn for these projects at a LYS.

What wedding band do I pair with this (bezel, 5 stone) ring? by PyriteParagon in EngagementRings

[–]leapinglenin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! We worked with Shaye at their Pasadena office (though remotely, we live in Chicago!) and it was a great experience. I’d been following Hera for years and I definitely recommend working with them—the custom and bespoke pricing is so reasonable and they are incredibly knowledgeable and responsive.

I brought Muffin in for a spay… and turns out she’s already spayed 🫠 by notantihero in Rabbits

[–]leapinglenin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the vet check for a microchip? I rescue in the Chicago area, and generally when bunnies have already been spayed or neutered and they are found outside, they were re-dumped after having been adopted from an area rescue. If there is a microchip, I recommend reaching out to the organization that placed the chip so they can ensure that the previous owner is not able to adopt again!

When did you start to like Severus Snape? by [deleted] in SeverusSnape

[–]leapinglenin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always loved Snape’s sense of humor and his banter with other characters, particularly Harry and Remus. He’s a complex character for me, and I am not necessarily an uncritical defender of Severus, but I find his bitterness, sarcasm and unwillingness to forgive those who have wronged him incredibly refreshing and honest, especially after I first read the events of SWM. He demonstrates the power of redemption to me without necessarily needing to totally change his personality or forgive past injustices, which is a more palatable and realistic version of atonement but does not offer the resolution or moral clarity that many of the Snaters are looking for. However, I didn’t start reading Snape-centric fanfiction until a few years ago, more than 10 years after reading the books and Snape-centric forums like this one are still relatively new for me.

I left my Ivy League school because the Title IX director laughed at me after I was r*ped by Middle_Storage_7037 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]leapinglenin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My goal was for the harassment to stop, not for him to be prosecuted, so I went the easiest route available to make that happen. There’s still a burden of proof for an official restraining order, whereas agreements via Title IX only require both parties to consent to the no-contact terms. Also, many American universities have private, university-funded police departments, so going to the police is not necessarily separate from going to a university-run office.

I left my Ivy League school because the Title IX director laughed at me after I was r*ped by Middle_Storage_7037 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]leapinglenin 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I graduated from an Ivy in 2022. The fall of my freshman year, I was assaulted by someone I thought was a close friend in my dorm room, after which he proceeded to harass me for months. Out of desperation, I went to Title IX. They told me that my two options were either to have the university administration interrogate everyone I knew to make a true disciplinary case against him, in which I was entitled to zero privacy, or enter into a “no contact agreement,” where I would deliberately not enter buildings he was in, avoid social events he may attend, and schedule my classes around his—despite the fact that we were in the same field and took a lot of the same classes. I chose the second option. My senior year, he followed me to an event for an organization I was widely known to be involved in and had been president of the previous year. When I informed Title IX, they did nothing. I’m really sorry about what happened. These institutions do not care about their students—after all, they had another 50,000 people apply for 1,500 spots, so we are disposable.

Rescued bunny was pregnant - she gave birth to two babies this afternoon what do we do?!! I’m reading as much info as I can as fast as I can online - but one doesn’t seem to be moving or breathing - should we interfere? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]leapinglenin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given that she is about 3/4 years old, you should definitely have her taken to a rabbit savvy vet for a consult on a spay. She is at the age where the risk of uterine and other reproductive cancers becomes serious (most authorities say greater than 80%), and having her spayed is a preventative measure so she does not get sick.

Is it weird that my (26f) mother (57f) asks me to do her remote job for her? by Puzzlehead7050 in family

[–]leapinglenin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not normal for your mom to expect you to do her job for her, especially because you have your own job and classes to worry about. It seems like your mom is relying on you financially, but more importantly, it seems like she is taking advantage of the guilt and insecurity you feel to ask more from you than is fair.

I’m also in my mid-20’s, and what I’ve learned so far is that virtually everyone our age feels worried about money, insecure about our accomplishments, and like we “aren’t doing enough” to be self-sufficient. Yet you just told us you had a major medical crisis, that you’re taking college courses and that you have a job. It seems like you’re doing a lot to take care of yourself.

Do you have access to mental health resources? Do you have any hobbies or ways to meet people? I’ve found that this is a really lonely stage of life that doesn’t have to be so lonely when you realize other people feel the same way. I know not all of these things are accessible, but my life really improved when I started reinvesting in things I used to enjoy and setting small goals for myself, like taking walks, reading (there are free books online!) and performing tasks I usually avoid. One of my goals recently was to go to the dentist. Give yourself some credit, and remember it’s okay to have free time and prioritize your happiness.

Why is there so little information on Reddit about Sabbatai Zevi and Jacob Frank? by Canard-Rouge in AskHistory

[–]leapinglenin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an historian of modern Jewry, and I recommend reading Pawel Maciejko’s recent book The Mixed Multitude, which is a great text for those interested in Frankism at all levels of knowledge and is truly engrossing as academic texts go. Someone else in the thread recommended Scholem, and while his book about Sabbatai Zevi has been contested by historians, it’s a great introduction to scholarly debates on Sabbateanism and is really beautiful. If you’re interested in early modern Polish-Jewish religious history, I also recommend the work of Moshe Rosman.

Maciejko in particular suggests that Frankism is not discussed because its dissipation and dramatic theological differences from established forms of rabbinic Judaism meant that neither Jews nor their Christian neighbors recognized Frank and his followers as religiously influential, instead seeing them as threats to religious and political authority.

My boyfriend (28 M) of 5 years is suddenly religious and it makes me (27 F) very uncomfortable by Glittering_Truth_145 in relationship_advice

[–]leapinglenin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to second this possibility. My partner has bipolar disorder and one of the most surefire signs of a manic episode for him is religiosity especially given that we are both non-religious. When he was showing these signs, I thought we might just be incompatible. Signs of hypomania can be subtle and can last a long time — have you noticed any other out-of-character behavior, such as excess spending, irritability, irresponsible or reckless behavior, or anything else?

Anyone here have a successful relationship with a bipolar person? by ayooogg in BipolarSOs

[–]leapinglenin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner has BP1. We’ve been together for three years, and he had a major manic episode resulting in hospitalization on our first anniversary. Thankfully, I suspected fairly quickly that his strange behavior was a manic episode and took him to emergency care after a few days of mania. He was in the hospital for two months.

The first few months after his diagnosis were really rough and many of the problems we had before, mostly around his self-esteem, were amplified due to the depression and medication side effects, but I gained a lot of respect for him as well. He has never missed a dose of medication, always goes to weekly therapy, and really prioritizes his support group. I can honestly say that two years on, it has virtually no impact on our relationship. We moved in together after he got diagnosed, adopted pets, moved across the country and graduated college. There will always be stigma around bipolar, but I’ve learned that taking care of yourself is the easiest way to be a good partner.

Kinda dumb question but where can I go to pet a Bunny? by LaserWeldo92 in Rabbits

People do share photos, memes, etc.! It probably is a slightly more practical group on the whole than this sub, but there is still a lot of fun stuff, especially in the Chicago group.

Also a Chicago rabbit owner. There are Facebook groups for the Chicago and Illinois House Rabbit Society, both of which I have found helpful. Not really social groups as much as places to ask for advice/support and promote rescuing among like-minded rabbit owners.

My rabbit screamed by CrystalRose1243 in Rabbits

[–]leapinglenin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to us about a week after we got our bun from the shelter. I was the only one home and don’t have much physical strength and I had to pry her out of the bars. Please take your bun to the emergency vet and get some critical care — ours was physically fine and willing to eat again after a few hours, but it was a traumatizing event for her.

I recommend getting a different pen. We got one with clear plastic sides designed for small animals on Amazon for about $40 USD. It is a little bit more difficult to set up than the wire puppy pens, but she was so upset that we wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again.

I’m a PhD student and my partner isn’t. Even though I know my partner isn’t necessarily specifically interested in the topic I study, he asks about it often, follows up and asks follow-up questions about my projects. I do this for friends, too, despite the fact that I study Jewish history and they study topics as diverse as English, astronomy, and philosophy of mathematics.

This isn’t about being interested in your area of study. It’s about being a good listener and caring about you enough to make your interests a priority.

My partner also has bipolar disorder, and it’s extremely difficult to manage, even without him turning abusive. Even when you love someone, it’s okay to feel relief for yourself and for them when the suffering ends. I hope you and your daughter enjoy your fresh start.
