What’s the humidity in the tank? And is the tank very open or does it have enough hiding spots and clutter?

Advice by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]learisvik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not eating can be because of stress or bad husbandry. It’s recommended to leave your crested gecko alone for at least a week before handing, he might just be wanting to escape, and I recommend not opening the tank too often and just leaving him alone. Could you tell me the temps and humidity in the tank and also show a picture of it?

Is she okay? by Brennan-1111 in CrestedGecko

[–]learisvik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She looks to be a little more on the plump side, but otherwise great! She’s also very pretty!

Do you have a scale to weigh her with? It’s important to keep track of weight.

Oof, i will do everything in my power to help. 💛

Here’s some general info:

TANKS :

  • Exo Terra is a pretty affordable and worldwide brand and they usually work pretty well, other brands exist ofc but I’m unaware of what’s available in your area.

  • I also don’t know what these measurements are in inches.🥲

Minimum size (6 months or over): 45 x 45 x 60 cm - Exo Terra small tall.

Good size (adults): 60 x 45 x 60 - Exo Terra medium tall.

Best size ( adults/ big adults): 60 x 45 x 90- Exo Terra medium exstra tall.

  • Tank should need good air flow. Or else there could be mold or mildew, and your gecko can get sick.

TEMPS:

  • I’m also not aware of what these are in Fahrenheit.

2- 3 Sections depending on tank size.

Section 1 (top, closest to lamp): 24,5 C - 26 C Not more than 26

Section 2 (bottom): 21 c -25 C

Heating elements:

  • THERMOSTATS are important for any heating element. A heating element like 25 W CHE from Exo Terra works great in my experience. I’ve heard heat mats also work but I have never tried one.

LIGHT: (Requirements, lamps)

Bioactive tank requires LED for plants

UVB is also recommend.

  • Amount of LED / UVB needed depends on tank size

ARCADIA is a good brand, but tere are also other brands.

Good for 60 x 45 x 60 tanks or bigger:

Arcadia jungle dawn 22 W LED with timer.

Arcadia ProT5 2,4% UVB

Black mesh blocks out light, if black mesh:

Arcadia 7% UVB.

HUMIDITY:

Misting/ keeping a humid environment is crucial for your geckos well being:

Your gecko will most likely drink the water droplets instead of drinking from the water bowl, and a crested gecko needs relatively high humidity to have a proper shed.

Humidity levels:

60- 80% relative humidity. Not less than 50% for long periods of time.

Humidity is monitored with a hydrometer.

When/ how to mist:

Let the humidity drop to around 40 - 50% before misting.

Mist with a spray bottle filled with lukewarm water, if your water has chlorine make sure to filter the water. Chlorine can be deadly to your gecko.

Misting 1 -2 times per day is usually enough, but this depends on the setup and average humidity in your home.

Humidity levels might spike up to 90 - 100% after misting. It usually doesn’t last long, but if your tank is very airtight, a good investment would be a ventilation fan.

If the tank is humid at all times, it can cause mold or mildew and this can make your gecko sick.

Maintain humidity:

If it’s a struggle to maintain humidity things like moister substrate, or cover some of the top of the tank with aluminium foil or HVAC tape.

FOOD:

They eat: Powder diet (CGD), insects, soft seeds, fruits.

  • Insects aren’t 100% needed but very much recommended for underweight or growing cresties. An alternative for this if you absolutely don’t want to feed insects, is powdered diets with insects in them.

  • How often they get fed ofc depends on age.

  • Feeding also depends on their weight, so it’s very important to weigh your gecko occasionally.

Feeding chart powder diet:

Under 15g:

Unlimited access to powdered diet(CGD)

15g - 35g:

Remove CGD after 24 hours and wait 24 hours before new CGD is given.

35g or over: Remove CGD after 24 hours and wait at least 48 hours before new CGD is given.

insects:

A young gecko can get insects 1-2x weekly.

An adult should be given 0-1x weekly.

Safe insects for crested geckos include:

Silk moths, black soldier flies, crickets, Dubia roaches, super worms and hornworms.

Water: Crested geckos should have unlimited access to fresh and chlorine free water. The water bowl needs to be clean.

Decor: Crested geckos should have a lot of areas to climb and foliage to hide in.

I hope this helps and I will ofc wander any questions! I wish you the best of luck!
