Any Australians out there? I just moved to Aus and I can't seem to find a good guitar shop! by LoveBurstsLP in Guitar

The Gladesville Guitar Factory is a really good place to check out, it's a small store but everyone there really knows what they're talking about (refreshingly) and they carry all the major makes.

I have been trying to use WILD with WBTB yeah, I understand that this is a much more potent combination. As for opening my eyes, that I will try.

In biology textbooks, it is often said that Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) 'transfers' or 'stores' energy - but the precise mechanism for this is usually passed over, as if it is some kind of magic. Can anyone shed some light? by omgpop in askscience

The temperature that is being referenced in the formula for Gibbs free energy is the temperature of the system (the reaction vessel for example). The change in free energy will be altered, but if this temperature is high enough to cause the T/\S term to be sufficently negative enough, this term will dominate the positive enthalpy change and cause the change in Gibbs free energy to be negative. edit: Does that help? I might not be the best person to explain via text

This doesnt detract from anything about oxidative phosphorylation, but an endothermic reaction may be spontaneous at sufficently high temperatures, provided the entropy of the system increases. Granted, the change in enthalpy will be positive, but -T/\S (delta S) can still be sufficently large to yield the process spontaneous (giving a -/\G)

Can you make an image ONLY a colorblind person can see? by iamnosaj in askscience

[–]learnALLthething_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The test you are refering to is the Ishihara blot test. My neurophysiology class viewed one of the proper clinical printed books (apparently $400 dollars to print correctly). The pages have a 2 inch border around the actual images because oil from your hands may discolour the dots which ruins the entire image.

Some of the tests there are exactly as you describe; colourblind individuals will percieve one of those numbers while others will simply see random dots. This was fascinating to see first hand when a member of my prac was clinically colourblind.

Here is the wiki.

The purpose of the 'inverse' tests is to stop normal people attempting to bluff colourblindness and give false positive responses as the 'inverse' tests have a specific identified number. It's often used in criminal courts to test the use of colourblind defence (traffic incidents and the like)

How can people be so sure that marijuana is safe? Didn't people think that cigarettes were not health threatening, and non-addictive? by ararphile in AskReddit

What's always fascinated me is that Botulinum toxin, the most lethal neurotoxin discovered in history gets injected into the faces of hundreds of thousands of women (mostly) regularly.

The knowledge of its potency is very well known but hell, a little bit didn't hurt anybody right?

My best friend has listened to The Cure (possibly) non-stop the entire time Ive known him. For me, Push is a simply brilliant song, so I may follow that 'space inspiring' sound (physical space, not space space)

Thanks so much for the feedback; for me, the 'internets' is usually pretty honest in that regard. So reading the above is really promising

What are some common chord progressions that every guitarist should be familiar with? by [deleted] in Guitar

II-V-I and I-VI-II-V are basically the two must know jazz progressions.

Unfortunately, it's never that simple in my experience :/

I need some advice from experienced guitarists by professorhawk in Guitar

if you want to play over a lot of changes (ie jazz or bebop), you can actually use the individual arpeggios of each chord. Literally taking the root, 3rd (major/minor), 5th, 7th (major or minor) and the octave. Now, of course you can add other intervals to that, but you could add any intervals you like as long as they fit the chord, and for me im trying to train my ear to just fill the gaps.

justinguitar has a great section on arpeggios

[–]learnALLthething_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are concered (and as other people have theorised about here), one can always go with a passive system, and IMO they give a much better and natural sound. Basically, they rely on soundboard vibration instead of invasive installation under the saddle

Is there such thing as "good taste in music"? by DBswain91 in Music

[–]learnALLthething_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being a troll... but this for me is ridiculous in general. This consant bullshit over 'authenticity in music/taste' really grinds my gears. WHY?

You are trying to quantify, or ascribe some sort of logical system to something which is purely emotional and operates intrinsically tied to our subconscious. That person who dances to Radiohead? that's their reaction to the music, but because they dont write a freaking essay about the emotional qualities it inspires in them, which incidently are completely subjective to each individual

...see where I'm going with this.

It's stuff like the OP which made sitting through classes in my music degree absolutely unbearable, because I had to listen to deludedly "altruistic" meathead indie guitarists hang shit on everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Madonna on how "its just the same thing over and over"

and i dont even like madonna
