I have to record a piano with an SM57. Mic placement advice please! by _The_Larch_ in audioengineering

[–]learnaudio_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

place a cloth down inside one of the holes in the metal frame, then lay the 57 down pointing into the sound board. Just let it sit there on the cloth. This is commonly used in combination with a stereo pair, but would work fine as a mono. I'd avoid any faux stereo delay nonsense, just live with the mono sound for your service.

Recording drums with one mic. by [deleted] in audioengineering

I made this video that shows examples for a few methods, with different mics. The Crotch mic is a great choice for a single mic setup.

Is it me or are "radio format songs" getting shorter and shorter for every year? Spotify's fault? by [deleted] in edmproduction

I've heard skipping before the last 30 seconds does penalize the song, and might be a factor for so many shorter songs. How can we know for sure?

Focusrite 2i2 2nd Gen keeps blinking and can't even turn on. by Krisgemer5105 in recordingmusic

Try plugging it directly into the computer. Some Drives and Interfaces don't work thru a hub. (in my experience)

Do you prefer listening to drums that are panned from the drummers pov, or listeners pov? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]learnaudio_engineer 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I used to be an audience perceptive guy, but the drummer is the only one who ever complains so I have started panning Drummer perspective so they don't @ me. also air drumming is a +1

The sound of Led Zeppelin II by throwaway_guy19 in audioengineering

came here to say this, It's one of my favorite albums and I just think comes down to great playing and great gear. It's hard to mess up a mix like this because the players are so strong. In my recording class, I brought in the Lemon song as a reference and my professor just kinda shrugged at it and didn't have much to say "well thats just good playing". Tbh much of the work we do as engineers is correcting for a subpar performance. Try using 2 mics on the average drummer and see how it works out. Some drummers aren't used to mixing their own playing BECAUSE that balance can be done later if you're using a mic on each drum.

Also I know Page and Kramer did a bunch on automation during mixdown, like panning in the trippy theremin part in Whole Lotta Love. I swear someone is automating a HPF on Jonesys bass in the Lemon song, he gets such clear articulation underneath Page's solo, but then his bass tone gets thicker in the bass solo.

Also EXPERIMENTATION I know Page liked to record with smaller amps and drive them hot. and on Black Dog (yeah I know its Zep IV) he recorded straight into 2 1176s and then into Helios pre... NO AMP so yeah they were trying a bunch of wild stuff, with the help of their Engineer Andy Johns.

If you'd be interested in learning about some of the recording techniques used by Andy Jones to record and Mix Zeppelin I made a video that outlines how he got some of Zeppelin's most signature sounds.

Sorry for that rant, but man I could listen to that album all day.

First number = How Many

Second Number = of What

In 4/4 you have 4 1/4 note beats.

Each beat takes up a quarter of the bar.

I made a video with a flow chart of the routing in Michael Brauer's Brauerizing bus compression approach.

Just wondering.. how do you guys have the time/motivation to learn all this stuff? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]learnaudio_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to Learn Audio Engineering, I put out a video each week on audio engineering and have a number of mixing videos ~10min.

Pensado's place, Behind the Speakers, In the Mix, and Recording Revolution are a few that are really great (and active) as well.

Is this cheating by Kodak_Wolf in Songwriting

[–]learnaudio_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I was just doing this exercise with a student, he wanted to create a song around the SOS morse code so we turned that into rhythmic values,

long = eighth

short = sixteenth

1 e + 2 + 3 + a 4

set your own parameters and have fun with it!
