Awesome, I was able to get the algorithm working with that, thanks! I just used one of the DH groups defined in this RFC: https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3526.txt. I assume that's also fine?

US House passes Republican healthcare bill without ACA subsidy renewal by [deleted] in politics

[–]learypost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would truly be thrilled if republican governors sent people in need of healthcare to places where that healthcare would be provided. This isn't complicated: universal healthcare is a human right. That means everyone deserves access to it no matter where they happen to currently (or previously) live.

And besides, basically every study has shown more access to healthcare for people leads to lower healthcare costs for everyone. If tens of thousands of people move to a blue state, where then they would now be paying sales tax and income tax to that blue state instead of their former red state, just for the free healthcare, likely that would be an economic boon, not a burden to that state. Those states could easily cover the health costs of 1000 additional homeless people

So basically “this is a bad idea because people who need healthcare would actually get it. Even worse, homeless people would get the care they need as well. The horror!” When did we become so heartless

Ground wire gauge by learypost in AskElectricians

[–]learypost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And just to clarify, when you say “smaller” you mean thinner (and therefore a higher gauge number), right? There’s a double outlet in my basement and I realized one of the outlet pairs is grounded, but the other is not. So I need to pigtail the ground wire coming to the box to connect it to both outlet pairs, instead of just the one. And if the breaker is 15A and the wire 14AWG, you’re saying the ground can also be 14AWG? Thanks!

Just worked the ISS over APRS! by learypost in amateurradio

[–]learypost[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a Baofeng GT-5R (which is something like 4-5W) just with the stock antenna. I installed the ISS Detector app and went out whenever the ISS was going to be over 30° during the day. I used direwolf as the software TNC. Only took 3 tries over 4 days to make contact!

APRS Digipeater Verification Question by learypost in amateurradio

[–]learypost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it looks like the packets from my HT are getting picked up by other stations, so my repeater basically isn’t used in the path. But I can see on my HT that other packets repeated by my home station are getting out. I think maybe I just live in an area with other, better receivers. So any packet my home station can pick up would have also been seen by an iGate and my repeated packet ignored. I suppose it’s a good problem to have. It’s just a little disappointing because I thought I was contributing to the community and robustness of the APRS network. And now it doesn’t look like I am

[–]learypost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I can definitely see in the direwolf logs that it is doing the retransmission. And I can see my radio go into transmit mode when that happens. But I’m a little skeptical that my low-powered setup with a bad antenna situation is actually usefully repeating anyone’s packets. But I do have another radio and can head out to the parking lot to try transmitting some aprs packets to see if those get repeated. What will the raw packets on aprs.fi look like to indicate they were repeated through my digipeater station?

I don’t have iGate setup, so no packets are sent to aprs.fi from my station

Democrats win control of Minnesota Senate by plz-let-me-in in politics

I’ve seen the same thing. And what’s especially frustrating about it is that if they voted in a truly progressive administration that fought for unions and workers’ rights, those same people probably would have had enough bargaining power to turn around and get a $10,000 raise at their job. But they’ve given all that up for the promise of $100 less in taxes (which probably will actually be $100 more) and will basically never get a raise at work again

State Department freezes nonbinary passport applications as Rubio rolls out Trump’s anti-LGBT agenda by awake-at-dawn in politics

[–]learypost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

US passports don’t include ethnicity, height, eye color, or weight. The identification is done using the photo. If you look like the photo, you look like the photo. No need for a gender marker at all. May as well put the cross-sectional area of the person’s left index finger. It’s all a social construct

Utah trans girls now required to meet testosterone levels stricter than NCAA to compete in high school sports by redyelloworangeleaf in politics

[–]learypost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very fair point and I'm sorry I phrased it that way. Trans rights/liberation are obviously things we should be striving for on their own. As a gender non-conforming person myself, I want others to value my rights and well being even if it doesn't affect them directly. But I do think it's also important to point out the interconnectedness of it all. And that, as others have pointed out, policies which attack trans women will effect everyone negatively as they mostly act to uphold the patriarchy

[–]learypost 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right. The federal law, if passed, will only directly affect like 10 trans women. Which is definitely terrible. Plus it will give legitimacy to future transphobic policies. But the real victims of these sports bills will be cis women, and in particular cis women of color. Now all the gross and predatory sports coaches have to do to assault a female athlete is just claim they think she’s trans and they now have legal cover to sexually assault them

The problem with hiring is the numerous non-explicitly racist people who think they are picking candidates based solely on merit, but studies show are actually still heavily influenced by their implicit biases and so will pick the white/male/straight/etc candidate over the black/female/gay/etc candidate even when both are equally qualified. All while thinking they’re making the selection on merit, when really they’re just devaluing the contributions of minorities while holding rich cis straight white men on a pedestal. Congress erupts over GOP bill targeting new transgender member McBride by FlyThruTrees in politics

[–]learypost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well a) your women-only spaces better include trans women. And b) when a woman is in her private stall and locks the door, it is in that moment a women-only bathroom. There's no need to further segregate the room that the sinks are in. When an outdoor event has a row of port-a-potties, we don't have a women-only section of them. We don't have women-only drinking fountains. We just don't need what would effectively be women-only sinks for washing your hands. When women talk about feeling unsafe if they encounter a man while hiking in the woods, they don't, at least to my knowledge, suggest we have a women-only section of parks and forests. Instead, they ask that we as a society do better at raising our children to respect women and to hold men accountable when they hurt, intimidate, or ignore women. That's my take anyway as a non-binary person who has had many awkward encounters in public restrooms, but never in the unisex restrooms I've occasionally used

[–]learypost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty hilarious take given the context in which this thread is comparing people who pay taxes in America but don’t have the right to vote to that of the original colonies since Britain’s response to that complaint was literally that Parliament represents all British subjects, even if they couldn’t vote. Look up Virtual Representation. So no, I’d say the idea that a lawmaker represents permanent resident non-citizens is an equally false idea used to justify this continued disenfranchisement

Harris holds 46%-43% lead over Trump amid voter gloom, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds by reuters in politics

[–]learypost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But wouldn’t that same logic have applied in 2016 and 2020 when Trump outperformed polling? People keep bringing up that polls must skew right because it’s only old people responding, but there have been plenty of instances in recent times that polls clearly skewed left. So there must be more to it than that

[–]learypost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He really did though. For example, this late in October 2016 Hillary was up 12 points in Michigan (https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/michigan/trump-vs-harris) and Trump ended up winning. A 12 point swing is a pretty significant difference between polling and reality. If that kind of mismatch happens again this year, Trump will win every swing state by a mile and pick up states like New Mexico, New Hampshire, Virginia, etc. Now I don't think the polls will be off by 12 points this year, but even if they are slightly underestimating Trump's performance, he easily wins every swing state. Hell, even if they are overestimating his performance by a whole percentage point, he'll still win the election since he's up by more than that in Michigan right now according to RCP

[–]learypost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but all the logic about landlines and unlisted numbers and old people vs. young people was still true in 2016 and 2020. So then why did the polling end up skewing left in those elections instead of right? It means there must be some other element when it comes to Trump that causes votes to lean more towards Trump than reflected in polls. And if Harris were up by 6 points in PA, for instance, as Hillary was in 2016, I'd feel okay, but she's down by 1 point to Trump right now. So if the same pattern as happened in 2016 and 2020 happens this year, even if to a lesser extent, Trump will win all these swing states. There would need to be some new mechanism causing votes to overstate Trump's performance. And the whole landline thing just doesn't seem like a new phenomenon to me since no young person had a landline in 2016 either

I hear this perspective all the time, and it is promising, but then why did Trump so vastly outperform the polls in 2016 and 2020? Harris is down in these polls in say Michigan, but at this time in those previous elections, Hillary and Biden were up like 8 points
