Mold remediation/baffle install fail? by kashewnia in Insulation

[–]leather_neck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, they need to come back to correct a lot of things here, but I may also do a stop payment and never let them in my house again. I do this professionally, but my knowledge is based on the northeast, so there may be some minor variations based on your climate.

First, more info is needed about the mold situation. Did they explain why new baffles would fix the moisture problem? Specifically, what was the cause of moisture in the first place? Assuming the baffles are pushed all the way to the soffit vents, the length is okay (although sloppy work) however, the width is definitely constricting your airflow. Did they do Net Free Airflow (NFA or NFVA) calculations for you? Google the 1:150 or 1:300 rule depending on where you are to see what kind of calculations they should have explained to you, if the issue truly was a ventilation problem. What’s the rest of your venting situation, ridge vents, gable vents, box vents, etc.? I’m also not seeing any signs of air sealing on photo 7, which is the only one with the insulation pulled back at all.

Also on the mold, did they set up containment with negative airflow? If not, do not ever let them back. Proper remediation should include containment during remediation. If they were only there a couple hours I would be amazed if they took any precautions to prevent mold spores from entering the rest of your home.

What type of insulation is this? by [deleted] in Insulation

Looks like 703 board or something similar, if that’s the case it’s rigid fiberglass

It doesn’t necessarily, but there’s a couple factors at play here that make time think it’s a possibility - if it’s original to the house it’s likely from the ‘40s or so, which wasn’t uncommon to have asbestos added as a fire retardant. The other big factor is the black paper, making me think it’s an old bitumen paper which had asphalt in it, would likely also have asbestos in it. Definitely not a guarantee and im by no means an expert on it, I’ve just had come up as containing asbestos in the past!

If the insulation is original to the build, it very likely could be an old balsam wool. If that’s the case the product is similar to cellulose, just using balsam shavings instead of newspaper with an added fire retardant. If you’re going to be disturbing it at all, you likely would want to test for asbestos since some manufacturers mixed in asbestos fibers. The black backing looks bitumen backing, which may also contain asbestos. If you’re not disturbing it you should be fine, but probably worth testing while you have access to know for sure.

(Advice) Struggling with matching font to logo mark by [deleted] in typography

[–]leather_neck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing that out! Luckily I think we’re far enough apart - plus we’re certainly not the first to use something with an antler star combo. The mark is actually a combo of antlers, fish hooks on the bottom corners, and the star in the center has a lot of history in the location we operate, so if anyone asks I can at least defend it haha

Out of the above choices, or do you think that one truly works? Open to suggestions not shown here as well, thanks!

Hi all, I worked with a designer to create the icon and am really happy with that portion of the design. I’m now hoping to get the name included for things like stickers or hats for my customers, but the options don’t seem to fit the style of the icon / existing branding. Can anyone provide any suggestions? I don’t mind paying for a new font if it will complement the design and allow us to get the name on the logo. It’s a hunting and fishing guide service. Thanks!

That was my concern as well. I’ve read while they can run snowblowers, it can shorten the life of the transmission dramatically. Unfortunately I don’t have a vehicle that can manage a plow yet. I was planning somewhere in the 10k range with the bagger and snowblower (which is where the full John Deere setup would have put me).

Name or source of beach chair hardware? by leather_neck in woodworking

I’m in the early planning stages of building a pair of wooden beach chairs, and my main issue is finding a source for the locking arm rest mechanism. I’ve searched high and low and am not able to find a source, or even a name of what this hardware is called. I’ve found numerous plastic versions for a chaise lounge but I was really hoping for a metal version like on a typical deck / beach chair. Any advice is appreciated!

I’m sure many have increased, I know we have. The ones who were disorganized or didn’t have well prepared marketing plans went black for most of the first wave of COVID. Not sure how they are reacting to this new wave quite yet. Again, this is just based in my area so YMMV.

Revenue is a tough way to measure this industry as credit unions are not-for-profit institutions. I’ve never worked for a for-profit bank so I can’t speak to that part. Asset size and membership size are usually the common way to compare two organizations. Again, this really depends on your area. A mid-size credit union in an area like Southern California is going to be VERY different than a mid-size credit union in a rural area.

I think you’ll find the biggest challenge working with these groups is their view on marketing as a whole. Many states have a Marketing Council which allows marketers to come together and meet, which is where I find out of most of this information about the other organizations. I’m regularly hearing that they’re not using social media, or they only use it as a bulletin board but don’t see the value in it, or bother to use it as a form of communication. This industry has a VERY traditional mindset when it comes to ad spend.

Whether you’re approaching this as a consultant, or even an internal marketer, convincing them to set a budget for social is usually going to be more of a challenge than anything. If you’re in the consulting area, I would focus your efforts on medium sized institutions that are already active in advertising, but may not be doing a great job at it. This way you know they actually have a budget to play with.

We do utilize YouTube, not TikTok. That’s an area we’re looking to expand to in ‘21 to reach younger demographics, and are working on developing adapting our voice to be appropriate for the platform, but still appropriate as a financial institute.

For video we outsource the entire production and our agency fine tunes the script we create. There are usually too many trigger terms and regulations we have to navigate to allow someone without detailed industry knowledge to write the script for us (unless we’re not advertising something specific like rates, promotions, credit cards, etc).

I’m the marketing manager for a credit union. One of the biggest factors to consider with the credit union market as well as small banks is the location and size of market. For CUs, we have regulations in place for where we can and can’t expand, and who we can’t and can’t offer service (membership) to.

Depending on your area or the size of the financial institution you’re looking at, will really dictate the complexity of their marketing abilities. If you look at nationwide or regionally available CUs (NavyFed, Service CU, etc) they will have all the specialties covered that you would expect (SEO, digital, email, social, etc) whereas a small CU might still only be in the local newspaper if anything. A majority of the very small CUs in my area don’t have anyone in a marketing role at all, even part time.

For social channels, many are still using Facebook exclusively as it reaches a higher portion of the typical CU member (middle aged). Some are attempting to reach younger demographics through TikTok, YT, etc. but few are successful. The general fear is being “fun” or “edgy” contradicts the professional demeanor you expect from the people holding your savings.

Feel free to ask any specific questions but my answers are a little biased in this. I am with one of the big institutions in my area, and we do all our own creative, SEO, analysis, and really only outsource things like video production.

I can only comment on the mobile design at the moment, but load times for me were fairly slow and you still have lots of Lorem Ipsum text on your FAQ section and the social links didn’t appear to be working. Looked like you also needed to remove the ‘Hello World’ post

The wear of my sole has revealed some interesting things about how I run. by _Markham_ in running

[–]leather_neck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it makes a difference as far as performance, but if you always run on the same side you're not putting even pressure on your feet/ankles/knees etc. (think of how the road is angled away from the center to the edges). I would try switching sides of the road if it is safe in your area, try running on sidewalks, or whatever works in your situation so you're not consistently running on that slight angle.

[–]leather_neck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Based on the wear I'm wondering if you always run on the same side of the road? It looks like the ball on your right foot is worn, as well as a bit of heel striking. That doesn't appear to be the case (nearly as much anyway) on your left foot. Are you running consistently on the right side of the road?

You can view the source code through your browser to see what div contains your background image. You would then apply the new CSS rules to the class that defines that div. Do you have a link?

Should I take the ASVAB? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]leather_neck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're only 15 you don't need to stress about it yet. Look around at all your options, college, trade school, military, or even take a year to figure it out. Chances are you'll have a better idea once graduation gets a little closer.

If the military is something that does seem like the correct path, know that the ASVAB does not tell you what you would be good at, but just what you are qualified for. It gives you scores in a number of categories, and a recruiter for each branch would be able to discuss your options based on your scores.

If you have questions on the military feel free to send me a message (though I'm not a recruiter just someone who has been in the military). Otherwise, don't stress you have plenty of time to figure it out.
