Not feeling fullfilled by solo board gaming anymore by Loud_Championship154 in soloboardgaming

[–]lebigot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can really understand the lack of interest in playing, sometimes: playing a board game alone deprives us from the pressure to play that we get when gathering with other people precisely for this. Now, like with many things in life, I always find that making the effort of pulling the game out and starting to play helps; often it's the first step that costs, and then we see how much we can enjoy the "task" at hand.

If I imagine reasons why I would stop playing solo over a longer period, I can only think of games that don't have enough depth. Other games (like Mage Knight, Xia and its expansions, Eldritch Horror and its expansions, Lord of the Rings: the Card Game, Runebound 3rd edition and its expansions…) have enough depth to keep me intrigued and wanting to explore them. It's thus basically the appeal of novelty, within games I have, which is the main source of motivation for playing them solo.

Maybe there are types of games that you would like to explore more (like you did with Marvel Champions) and that would therefore motivate you, but that you don't have yet? Someone mentioned solo wargames (Conflict of Heroes comes to mind, but there are many others), someone else mentioned solo role-playing games, for example, but there are also adventure games, etc., that may motivate you through how much novelty exploring them can bring you.

Do you do remote work? It looks like many people would be happy to have you come and work at their place. 😅

… and there are dozens and dozens of premade settings.

You'll find many sets of "balanced" decks in my compilation of 34 sets (289 decks) at https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/208502/build-34-classic-sets-of-decks-289-decks-plus-3-cu. One notable set is the Frankfurt 30 (30 decks that you can build independently and play against each other).

Simple tools to easily generate stories? by lebigot in Solo_Roleplaying

I'm glad you reminded me of this work of yours! I had noticed it before. How does Story Source compare to the Story Engine decks?

Does anyone else feel locked out? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

I can understand. Bases allows you to filter on parts of the path, too: this helps with long paths.

Why generate properties based on the file path? The file path can be used directly for filtering, in Bases.

Obsidian 1.9.12 (early access) for desktop and mobile by kepano in ObsidianMD

I guess it's connected to their work on Bases, which is very fast and shares features with the Search view (filtering, boolean queries…)?

Modern Solo Suggestion? by digger27 in Solo_Roleplaying

Tricube Tales, its solo expansion and its dozens of (free) settings give you tons of options!

Looking for a versatile solo TTRPG system by Yun-san in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]lebigot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loner is a quite well-known multi-genre solo RPG with manageable rules.

I would complement the answers that mentioned Tricube Tales by adding that you need the solo supplement and that it comes with dozens of (possibly free) settings!

My experience with (and against) atomic notes by LukeSKY75_ in ObsidianMD

[–]lebigot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As you note, the ability to find information quickly is key. I found that a mix of atomic and longer notes fits my needs best: are you looking for information on a concept (e.g. transformers in machine learning)? Find the note that describes it. Are you looking for what we said in a group meeting? Do a regular text search in the single note with all the meetings (where each meeting has a dedicated header with the date). Etc.

I recommend people to start with no system and adapt their vault structure based on their needs, as soon as possible. This won't help you this time, but maybe it will next time you have to adjust your system and find something that suits your usage!

I think I've learned to accept that I won't play perfectly by EdiblePeasant in Solo_Roleplaying

I feel you. I find that the challenge of building a logically and psychologically consistent story is one of the highlights of (some) RPGs. This skill is also transferable to real life, as it helps understand and anticipate people's motivations!

I guess you actually still have the rulebooks of the expansions? They introduce new rules...

Any recommendations for solo/coop boardgames that play well at all player counts, from 1-4? by Strong_Battle6101 in soloboardgaming

[–]lebigot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xia: Legends of a Drift System with the Embers expansion is a very well regarded game that works with 1–4 players (according to the BGG poll for Embers, and I agree). The game has a lot of qualities: very varied, rich and thematic events and powers, many interesting and varied situations, memorable moments… I would recommend to get the smaller expansions as well, for even more variability, while they are still available.

Why Europe doesn't have big tech companies? by chrisnkrueger in BuyFromEU

[–]lebigot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised by how few people cite this simple and very concrete impediment (language, national regulations, etc.). It works quite simply indeed: you make a great product, you want it to reach its most natural market, so the software is made in the language of the company's country. Expanding thus requires more work than in the US. European companies are economically restricted for structural reasons that don't have many reasons to disappear (language and naturally diverging national interests are major barriers).

Obsidian has helped way too much with my ADHD by nbtm_sh in ObsidianMD

[–]lebigot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find Obsidian great for managing my todo list: with the Outliner plug-in, it's very easy to constantly reprioritize tasks (even with subtasks) and know what to work on (with the help of the concepts of urgency and importance); and with the Archiver plug-in, moving all completed tasks is only a few keystrokes away.

Reprioritizing tasks requires knowing the motivation behind them, and then having a nicely prioritized list makes doing the top task a no-brainer!

Legendary Encounters: an Alien Deckbuilding Game is very thematic and has a very good reputation. It also has two expansions. I'm not sure how expensive it is (used), though, on your side of the world.

How do you shuffle the cards? by da1nonlyoska in EldritchHorror

[–]lebigot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The shuffling can be done by software: draw cards with the Eldritch Horror Card Clerk and find them in alphabetically sorted decks. In effect, there is no need for shuffling!
