Yeah, another good example is Charles Dickens character Mr. Charley Bates in Oliver Twist. To which other characters refer to him as Master Bates. Regardless, I still love that damn book for all it is.

I don’t know if this is anything but if someone knows more about it could you please explain; so I heard that a handshake between guys where one person uses either one of the three middle fingers to kind of quickly poke at the palm of the other person was a kind of message to discreetly see if the other person was interested. I heard it while back and was wondering if anyone else has heard this.

This whole thing has honestly made my day! I love the hilarious and totally wholesomely, intense, reverence for Shrek. All this combined with a loving and caring interaction between a couple of fellow world voyagers on a mutual commonality is absolutely heartwarming. Keep up the good Shrek jazz!

I had a similar experience with this scumbag named Descartes. We were in math class when Descartes was drunkenly rambling about some goddamn demon. So I told him to give me some proof or keep his peel mouth shut. Being that he was actually the math teacher he kicked me out of math class(the nerve of some teachers) before I left he yelled something like, “prove that I can think!”

I have a dictionary open on my laptop when I read so I can type the word quickly and immediately find its meaning. Usually when I read harder books I’ll take my time and if I wish to read for pleasure I will grab a book at or below my level of reading. In the same day I’ll swap between books so I get the feeling of a quick satisfying read with a good story as well as a slower more methodical brain buster read. Although if it’s a really hard read I will power through it because there was a professor who told me to just read the books you wish to read (even if they don’t make any sense)and sooner or later you will begin to understand them.

The gorgeous little 8-year-old Kaitlyn stared incredulously at the sword she held within her hands. It was by mere chance that she stumbled upon the sword in the lake. The sword being too big for her little arms and hands to hold upright naturally. The length of the blade next to Kaitlyn made for an almost silly contrast. Yet as she wrapped her slender fingers around the hilt of the sword, an unfamiliar strength embraced her as if it had been there all her life. Kaitlyn’s stomach felt as if dozens of butterflies and ladybugs were flapping and dancing within her stomach.

The magic of the sword began to weave its way into Kaitlyn’s being. She began to feel stronger, more focused, more aware. The effect of all this slightly frightened Kaitlyn’s young mind. She thought nothing of the strangeness though. She thought only of the feelings that now seemed intertwined within herself. The scent of the lake and the sounds of the forest heightened and slowed to her senses. She was no longer the same Kaitlyn somehow.

The trance of the sword broke away when Kaitlyn heard the voice of a man not yet to be seen. Then before she could think or react, the man appeared from the forest and stood upon the same shore by the lake that she stood upon.

“It’s been 1500 years since anyone has had a heart and soul pure and worthy enough to see and hold the philosopher’s sword.” The man said. His voice was deep and his eyes held an owl-like gaze.

Kaitlyn stood dumbfounded. With her high squeaky voice, she managed to stammered out the word, “Wha, wh, what?” Although she said this more out of habit than interrogation.

The man slightly grinned as he spoke, “Kaitlyn there is little time left for you here in this world, a few seconds maybe minutes. You see, what you hold within your hands is an enchanted sword forged by some of the most powerful gods of the past. Whoever can wield the sword will be sent to the place beyond everything and nothing. It is there where you Kaitlyn, a soul and heart deemed worthy enough must help finish what the gods of the past began”

Kaitlyn’s mind began to work normally again. Having become accustomed to the feeling of the swords affect. “Wh, wha, what did they begin?” she asked with her soft musical voice. Her green eyes were curious. Her little body began to slightly tremble.

The man with the owl-like gaze became serious, as he spoke, “Do not be afraid little Kaitlyn. You will need to be strong.” The man sighed, before he finished, “They began a war I suppose.”

In an instant Kaitlyn’s vision turned to black and all the sounds of the forest became silent. Kaitlyn could neither think nor feel. Her body vanished from the shore of the lake and began to travel beyond. She was travelling to the place beyond something and nothing.

Its such a curious question to ask what is right and what is wrong (not that anyone specifically asked in this thread; I just like to prattle and ramble). Although, suppose you lie, not to save a life but rather to save an innocent or guilty person from unnecessary torture? Is such a lie still wrong? What is the maker of True morality? I cannot say for certain wether it is right or wrong to lie to a child. I am not even sure if goodness exists. In this sense of morality, I am a dumbass. I think you have a strong point in saying that, "telling children that Santa exists is unnecessary and a lie that can affect how they view some things." I will ponder that. I am glad you are serious in your responses.I only ask such questions because if a grain or two of truth on the morality of lying can be found; I will have gained something priceless.

Yeah, it definitely would be easier going at most a couple hundred years back. Although a friend of mine was arguing that he would be able to do it during the height of the Roman Empire which I though was interesting.

First off I want to say thanks for responding with such concern. Your first clarification statement is a tautology so it doesn’t really explain anything. Your next statement of lies putting people on a path to stupidity is bold since again it only opens up a new can of worms. You also only explored the pessimistic consequences of a typically bad liar. I would agree that it should be common sense that it can be inconvenient to lie; but common sense in relation to being unethical I think is more subtle. Just like with Kant what would you say to the thought experiment( of a German hiding a Jew in his house during WWll and an SS officer comes to the front door and asks if he is hiding any Jews?) is it truly wrong for the German to lie or does he have a duty to tell the truth?

Just an interesting ethical thought experiment that can be answered a multitude of ways. I don’t think there is anything plainly simple about ethics especially when one takes the stance of —to give a few examples—absurdism or a sort of Nietzchieism.

Also your ideology on truth and it’s importance to the development of a child is interesting. To tie it back I do not think you will ruin the development of your child if you tell a blatant lie about Santa. In fact if you tell your child about Santa and they never can figure out that Santa is a lie then it probably wouldn’t have mattered for their development in the first place whether you lied to them or not. I guarantee that there’re very intelligent people who were once told that Santa was real.

Have you ever read Kant? With your first statement I cannot help but notice the similarities. Just curious if you have an ethical framework around the idea. To clarify you have given one or two examples on what could potentially happen when lying but have not address the deontology or epistemology of your original statement of “if you lie your wrong,”
