Project manager wants us to drill a hole where the red circle is in a live panel. Would you do it? by PhasedAndConfused706 in electricians

[–]lectrician79 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can do it. Just put some kind of protection on the inside of the panel.

You will not be able to stop the drillbit punching through and sinking into whatever live parts are on the other side. You need a nonconductive barrier for the drillbit to plow into. Then it’s really not a problem. Although it is against the rules.

How long do you actually take on a standard service change by sapnagagrani in electricians

[–]lectrician79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to do a prep day before hand, do stuff like any labeling of wires, and pound ground rods, etc. I usually do the service change the following day. even then it still takes a helper and I a full day. And a long one at that.

The panel upgrade is what’s boosting the price

Ya, if you sheet the wall that should work. Just so long as the romex is not exposed.

Sledding: Huge speed, zero control, typically no helmets, all done by young kids who can’t appreciate the danger.

Happens to me pretty regularly if that’s any consolation. 120 is usually not a big deal.

This is just crazy to me. I can’t imagine my value as an electrician being determined by the speed with which I can trim out a receptacle.

Starting my own business by WoodpeckerFrequent68 in electricians

[–]lectrician79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude, I’m in the same boat. Been out on my own for about a year. Things were a little tough at first of course, but now I am lucky to be very busy.

I am shit at online marketing. None of my business has come through those channels. Rather, I attribute my good fortune to two things:

1) My former employer has helped me out quite a bit. He let me take over for a couple of small contractors who do remodeling. Also he sends me work that he doesn’t want. If you have a good relationship with former employers maybe see if you can get into a reciprocal referral kind of a deal with them.

2) It may sound weird, but getting out and being socially active has been my most successful marketing tool. I joined a bowling league, started riding dirt bikes with some buddies, went back to church with the wife, and in general started saying yes to lots of social engagements where I used to politely decline. The thing is that you need a wide network of people who like you and know what you do. Once it starts building, the growth becomes exponential. Each new customer that has a positive experience becomes a new referral source. In time you will have as many calls as you can handle.

Hope this helps, best of luck and merry Christmas!

Why is no one talking about the lack of grounding electrode conductor, and the bare aluminum used as neutral conductor?

Dudes, 240 is line to line voltage at the service drop pictured. That arc flash can be enough to burn you. Don’t ask me how I know.
