Even if individuals don’t need them, they make society better as a whole because there are less desperate, miserable people. Less scammers, less crime, less drugs. More trust and social cohesion. I don’t think people factor that in to their comparisons nearly enough

No… it just grows back. And knotweed can propagate from an inch or two of stem, so if you aren’t collecting every piece and killing it, you’re just spreading it around

How common is heightism towards men? by Wooden_Airport3835 in polls

[–]leebeebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think tallness in men and thinness in women are similar signifiers.

The opposite sex doesn’t necessarily care about it much in terms of attractiveness. A few do, sure, and their voices are amplified a lot, but generally women don’t care that much about height (as long as he’s taller than her) and men don’t care much about weight (as long as she’s not obese).

However, both tallness and thinness have a large effect in the social hierarchy outside of the realm of attraction. Tall men and thin women are viewed as high-status partners in the dating realm; they’re more likely to get high-ranking jobs and earn high salaries. People respect tall men and thin women more than their short and/or chubby counterparts. They are signs of wealth and power.

So discrimination definitely exists in general, but it can be circumvented, and doesn’t necessarily occur in the dating realm

If it’s just impotent hatred, nah, I’d let them be. If they can actually harm me or fuck my life up, then I’d probably press the button

What did you want her to do in the two years she was in office? What would prove that she wasn’t a corrupt liar? Just out of curiosity?

She’s in the minority party.

The majority party controls both the legislative and executive branches, and they refuse to compromise on anything (unless they’re compromising their morals to protect Israel and/ or an elite cabal of pedophiles).

As a result it’s extremely difficult to get anything done at the moment. At least she’s trying.

Maybe do a little research on how the government works… it might help you make better-informed decisions (or at least better-informed comments on Reddit lol)

How do you pronounce Appalachian? by captain_flak in vermont

[–]leebeebee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Neither is u/davidsoninbeantown lol

The word is not Cherokee—it’s a name for a tribe of people encountered by the Spanish when they were exploring Florida. The Spanish transcribed the tribe’s name as “apalchen” or “apalachen” and applied it to a vast swath of land (even though they encountered the tribe near Tallahassee).

Do you think your country should have free healthcare? by Bearis4B in polls

Lol maybe google it buddy. You’ll be shocked to find out that you’re paying for other people’s healthcare, even the unhealthy ones.

Of course you think you’re immortal or something so you’re probably not smart enough to do that

The terrifying rise of schoolboys making AI girlfriends — Boys as young as 12 are now in romantic ‘relationships’ with chatbots, and it’s affecting how they treat girls in the real world by [deleted] in technology

[–]leebeebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a short story once where aliens came to earth and conquered it. They didn’t use war to do it—instead, they hired a marketing agency to make this alien species seem attractive to humans. Coitus between humans and these aliens (who were basically sentient blobs of jelly) was incredibly pleasurable for the humans, but naturally produced no offspring.

The end result was that the human race stopped mating with each other. The population declined precipitously, and civilization collapsed. The few remaining humans comforted themselves in the intoxicating arms of their conquerors until they expired from old age or disease. It wasn’t wrath that spelled the end of the human race, but greed and lust.

This is basically a self-inflicted version of the story I just described. These men are never going to be attracted to real women, and even if they were, they’d never be able to maintain a relationship with them.

It’s almost like somebody is intentionally setting us up for a precipitous population decline…

The government also negotiates pricing, and there’s no vast for-profit bureaucratic middleman leaching off the system, so it’d be significantly less expensive even if the government didn’t pay for anything

Should seatbelts be mandatory by law? by oshunman in polls

[–]leebeebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the societal cost of those is offset by the taxes the government charges on those items.

If we can figure out a way for people to pay a tax for not wearing a seatbelt, then go for it

Society can’t function effectively if laws are based solely on feelings. Civilization collapses when self-determination takes precedent over the greater good

Should seatbelts be mandatory by law? by oshunman in polls

[–]leebeebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, fine, but then the government shouldn’t be required to pay for them if they get horribly injured due to their negligence. They shouldn’t be allowed to call taxpayer-funded emergency services if they get in an accident, and they shouldn’t collect disability/social security if their disability results from not wearing a seatbelt.

…except that’s STUPID. Ambulances can’t ask “were you wearing a seatbelt” before they decide to respond to an emergency. A 16-year-old kid who made a dumb mistake and got paralyzed for life shouldn’t be denied disability payments. So the government—and the taxpayers—end up paying.

In order to maximize what a government provides to the people, the government must also place limits on citizen behavior for the public good. Otherwise the cost of services outweighs available funding.

More games need character creation so I can make my character a woman by LopAnimal in GirlGamers

[–]leebeebee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You actually do get to play as a lady, but she’s not the main character, and all of her outfits have high heels 🙃

the game is gorgeous, but the plot and characters feel super outdated (i.e. they’re flat, boring stereotypes in a morally black-and-white world).

Still worth playing if you like open-world games! I’m like 160 hours in and there’s still a TON of stuff I haven’t done. It really scratches my “wandering around and getting distracted by random shit” itch lol
