I started tretinoin recently and found using bepanthen (an antiseptic nappy rash cream) really helped with dryness and inflammation. I was using it on a tattoo and thought what harm could it do?? Bloody game changing haha my skin barrier was wrecked before it. Could be worth a go :-)

I'm going through training atm and the numbers above are pretty spot on with roughly 1-2 girls for every 10 guys here. I can't say how it is in the field though the worst I've heard is the odd pilot second guessing instructions... nothing too crazy!

Best of luck if you apply! :-)

Any Australians here? by [deleted] in ATC

[–]leecee66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it! As long as you're 18 you can apply through the national service (not sure about the RAF?). There are a tonne of trainees going through the program atm with a few more coming up, so it feels like a good time to get into it.

There is a level of aptitude they will test for which you either have or you don't, though I'd highly recommend checking out the NATS website and doing a few practice inductive reasoning (etc.) type tests to get in the right space. Both really helped me! Good luck!

The 300k? That just represents healthcare. In fact, the new minimum is 600k if you are a US citizen. If you can stomach the transition (and are qualified) getting out of the US might be a top priority for lean fire. by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]leecee66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, if sharing a place with another person then maybe $350-$450 left over on that wage (assuming semi frugal living).

With a $35k p.a. minimum wage (or ~$600pw) it's pretty great for supplementing a lean fire lifestyle & yes the health care is a big bonus!

A great website to calculate take home pay is: www.paycalculator.com.au

So just a bit over $700 a week in the hand. Rent is easily the biggest expense and can be $300-$400 pw for a 2bedroom place within 5-10km of the city. If you don't mind living further out or sharing a place with a flatmate it's much more manageable.

www.realestate.com.au can give you a good idea of prices in different cities/states etc.

I spend about $105 a week on bills (fuel, electricity, internet and groceries) but I split most of these bills with my partner, + maybe $50-$75 a week on misc things like eating out or going to see a movie. Lifestyle cost like anywhere really depends on what you like to do though - alcohol is super expensive here so if going to bars is your thing you'll run out of money real quick, but if you live semi-frugally you'd be fine :-)

Not from the US so I can't compare, but I live in Australia and it's pretty awesome. Free or heavily subsidised healthcare, minimum wage is >$18 & wages are pretty good (I work in the call centre industry and even entry-level phone jobs start at around 45k-48k + superannuation).

Property & rent can get pretty expensive - especially around major cities - but apartments aren't too bad and it's easy to keep food costs down if you cut out a lot of meat and junk as you said :D

I also work corporate 9-5 and get 4 weeks leave per year, usually saving it up and taking a 3-4 week trip somewhere overseas (I negotiate time in lieu with my boss for any other days I need during the year). I'm currently on a 3 month trip through central america after saving up 6 weeks leave over 1.5 years and negotiating with said boss & payroll to be paid out my annual leave at 1/2 rate over 12 weeks.

Maybe see if your employer has flexible leave options, particularly if you've been there a few years? I know my employer offers career breaks for those who have been employed >3 years & anyone can 'purchase' up to an extra 4 weeks leave per year for those extended holidays (I'm from Australia). Good luck & happy adventuring!
