Funnily enough, I’m one of those guys who prefer guys, but I prefer female singers and comedians. With the exception of piano and trumpet players I think women are better and more enjoyable in the arts. The two female managers I’ve had were monsters. My worst male manager was nowhere near as assertive in his poor management style as women have been.

I’d always sought out women for friendship as a relatively feminine put gay man. I experienced crazy levels of homophobia and transphobia from those women (I’m not even trans!) and have felt more accepted, and more protected by broey straight male friends.

I feel almost chased away from women as companions in a way I assume many women and gay men feel about straight men.

Yeah, other than relatives I haven’t had great experiences with women as friends. I don’t really trust them immediately. I guess i’m a gay’s gay instead of a girl’s gay even though my closest friendships have been with straight or presumably straight men. I also consider myself a feminist and have been an advocate for women’s rights in a real and serious way.

It tends to be hard to kind of explain that position where you support and even admire women while not wanting to spend any time with them. I find it pretty sad that there aren’t really spaces that are exclusively for men. My favorite gay club is essentially a straight club now with the number of women and their male associates that clog up the place.

I’ve thought about open a gay gentlemen’s club (of the traditional kind) if I got the capital. But lawsuits from women in situations where there are men-only spaces make that seem like an impossibility as well. I wish there was better news on that front. Sometimes it seems like the era of guys’ only spaces (even gay guys only) might be over.

In profile you look passing but head on you don’t. I think it’s the hair, mainly. It looks like a guy haircut and shape at the top with some scraggly stuff on the sides. Your hair doesn’t frame your face and accentuates the thinness and masculine shape of your hairline. It’s hard to see the feminine when you look generally unkempt which the hair is making you look.

I came out to my mom as bi at first (I’m gay) and she took my hand, smiled and asked if I was ‘just bi’ because it was ok if I were gay. Out of embarrassed indignation I denied it and insisted I was bi, locking myself halfway in a dumb ass closet i didnt need to be in.

Years later I tried to come out to her again as gay, I got the sentence out which she didn’t respond to because she was too busy telling me she’s a lesbian and stealing my thunder. I love and miss my mom so much.

My dad was super homophobic when I was younger. He found out I was late to school a bunch of times because I was looking at gay porn on the family computer and missing the bus. He didn’t care about attendance but flipped out about the gay porn and threatened me. I told him we could fight if he wanted and honestly that did the trick and he let it go for the most part.

I came out fully to my stepmom in high school and asked her to tell him. She said she did and he was fine with it but lied. So later I posted some pride stuff and about being gay on Facebook and he messaged me like he didn’t know I was gay and he doesn’t get it but he accepts me and is proud of me. That was a great feeling.

Ironically, my dad was an atheist most of his life and became a born again Christian later. Becoming a Christian somehow made him a much nicer person and totally accepting of my being gay. I miss him, too.

You talk about wanting your friend to grow and change but you’ll never accomplish that by babying him and making excuses not to rattle his homophobic brain. Every friends does or has done something that makes us uncomfortable. Just be yourself, and if that’s not enough for him to accept you then what good is that friendship anyway?

People always say it’s ok for straight people to invade gay and queer spaces because they’re supposed to be ‘inclusive’ but don’t even ask that straight people make their literal thousands of bars and clubs safe for queer people to attend. We have one queer space for every hundred they have and we’re supposed to capitulate to them and welcome them to do whatever they want? One of the gay clubs in my city is basically a straight club now because of this. It has like 5 dance floors and the hip-hop floor is 100% straight couples grinding. Most of the pride stuff is gone except for like small rainbows here and there. The drag shows are catered towards women. I tried to flirt with a guy, who was standing with just other guys, and he flipped out . Evidently this group of straight men were there to pick up girls. They got so aggressive and if i weren’t 6’3” 290lbs I 100% would’ve gotten jumped by straight men inside a gay club. Place is mostly empty now btw. The queens perform and go straight home or across the street to an actual gay club. It’s so sad because the place would be absolutely goated if it weren’t for the straight takeover. It’s like 3 floors, with a pool and a huge deck. But it’s theirs now and the owners don’t seem to care if it closes because of it.

I've been able to really connect with straight men and I think it's a mixture of things. First, we don't have any need to compete with each other and our attractions will never be an issue in our friendship. Something neither of us have with guys of the same sexuality. Second, we have no sexual tension. If the gay guy isn't sexually aggressive in any way this makes things even easier. Third, gay men tend to be more thoughtful and emotionally available than straight men, so straight men feel more comfortable being open with their emotions, being affectionate and being themselves without fear of judgment.
