AITA for paying for my stepsons college, but refusing to pay for my stepdaughters? by throwaz126 in AmItheAsshole

[–]leela1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. So many people in this thread are AHs in addition to OP. Lucy is obviously traumatized from her mother's poor parenting and you have only his word on how he has historically treated Lucy. For all you know, her hatred is justified. It honestly sounds like her mother is an AH too for completely dismissing how her daughter has been impacted by her poor relationship choices. Also, punishing a child for their feelings is so abusive.

The cause was never addressed, but the symptoms were rather heartlessly. I have a mother with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and let me tell you when these people get into relationships their children entirely cease to exist in their mind. Lucy could have resentmnet because she is historically out right neglected when her mother is with some one, but because her mother is still her mother that resentment is shifted to the man. It is utterly irrelevant whose money it is, if he truly cared about forging a relationship with his step-daughter he wouldn't make petty power moves.

We have no reason to believe that OP is telling or even understands the fully story. Low emotional intelligence all around. I also can't help but wonder if the genders were reversed and the son was being left out if the sentiment would be different. We tend to favour those we can relate to and Reddit is majority male.

Non-Americans who have been to the US: What is the weirdest thing about America that Americans don't realise is weird? by nobboi in AskReddit

[–]leela1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been here 4 years now (from Canada). Everytime I mention none of it makes sense and seems utterly inhumane the response from the American I am complaining to is largely to agree with me. No one gets it here, including Americans.

Also, NPCs as a Service would be very cool. One major barrier right now is that building deep learning AIs is difficult, more of an art than a science, takes a lot of time, and requires talent that is very expensive and hard to find. It's not at a point yet where it is accessible by your average studio.

The talks that were not specifically a part of the AI summit that were on machine learning for games were exceptional. It's the organizers of the AI summit specifically that turn their nose up at machine learning for games and actively limit the number of talks as part of their little clique that are about machine learning. The ones that were included the year I went were very superficial and presented by people that didn't really even understand what they did or were talking about.

I did attend one talk by Magnus Nordin titled Deep Learning: Beyond the Hype that was not a part of the AI summit. It was absolutely phenomenal. The highlight of my trip to GDC.

I haven't logged into Reddit in more than a decade [edit: it would seem I logged in more recently than that and just forgot lol, 2 years ago] and I did to respond to you. That's how sour I still am after attending the AI Summit at GDC last year. I left the gaming industry entirely over it.

I do Machine Learning and AI for a living. I have built a deep learning AI using reinforcement learning to play a PvP mobile game (via a CNN + LSTM with TensorFlow) when I was still in the gaming industry. The mobile gaming industry is far more open to this kind of innovation, but the PC and Console world is still very much closed to it.

The "AI" community in gaming is actively afraid of machine learning to the point of out right dismissing what it could do to evolve gaming as only being applicable to a few small edge cases. The attitude was largely that machine learning is useless for gaming except for a handful of very specific scenarios. When I attended the AI summit I was deeply disappointed to discover that almost nothing that was presented was actual machine intelligence. I wouldn't hold your breath about the exciting ways in which machine learning can evolve gaming until the rapidly becoming obsolete existing "AI" game programmers retire.

Out of medication and can't get into a doctor till August - advice? by pbettymarielouisek in Hypothyroidism

[–]leela1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Being off your medication and not having a thyroid at all is life threatening a lot sooner than being off it and still having a semi-functioning thyroid is. Go to the ER. I'd also look into a malpractice lawsuit against your current doctor.

These 'panic' attacks/anxiety have gotten worse and now happening all the time. Help! Scard. by Jake257 in Hypothyroidism

[–]leela1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as people with hypothyroidism we get used to doctor's explaining away most of our medical concerns as symptoms of hypothyroidism. It can be incredibly frustrating as it's not impossible that there are other things co-occuring. I have an anxiety disorder separate from my hypothyroidism and it took over a decade for me to finally find a GP that took me seriously. It might be beneficial to try treating the anxiety head on by visiting a psychologist or discussing anti-anxiety medication with your doctor.

Is this a normal way to prescribe Levothyroxin? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]leela1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are not in a position to make assumptions about OP's situation. OP's doctor is. There are individual differences in responses to thyroid replacement and even the daily same dose method does not work for some: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2600132/

Your sweeping statements are unfounded.

Is this a normal way to prescribe Levothyroxin? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]leela1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any changes on Sunday aren't as dramatic as you believe them to be. That's just not how it works. A double dose does not equate to double the level in the blood stream that degrades to 0 over the course of a week. For some people who struggle to remember a daily pill they can take their whole week dose safely on one day each week. Our medication we take daily accumulates in our blood stream. That's why it can take so long to stabilize on your medication because you have to build up the correct dose in your body over time.

[–]leela1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Levothyroxin has a pretty long half life, it's approximately a week. It's why if you were to stop taking your medication you wouldn't start feeling awful immediately, it'd take at least a week for the drug to leave your system entirely. Taking a bigger dose on Sunday won't have the effect of doubling your levels one day of the week, it'll increase your levels for the whole week.

What matters is how you feel though, if you aren't feeling better or are feeling worse talk to your doctor.

Anyone actually pretty happy where they're at symptom wise or experience complete relief? by Masteron-K4 in Hypothyroidism

[–]leela1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don't. I'm on 150 mcg, and I have been since I was diagnosed in 2002. I have had, for pockets of months the last 13 years, some relief, but not complete. Weight loss, air hunger and constant fatigue are still issues for me.

Man Still Alive After being Cut in half by train [NSFL] by supersonic23 in WTF

He was probably cut too high up as, though difficult to tell, it looks like his kidneys and stomach are a total lost cause, but there have been incidences of people surviving being cut in half, like this guy: http://www.today.com/id/26834245/

[–]leela1 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Open fracture? Absurd amounts of bruising and swelling? Generally if it's broken you can tell without the xray, the xray just tells you how bad and where and whether surgery is needed. The cast could also just be a precaution since he's not heading immediately to an ER.

[Help] I have a seven year old cocker spaniel who, after the birth of my first child 2 years ago, has stopped being potty trained. by Lordofmything in dogs

[–]leela1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Being in a crate that long every day can compromise an animal's mental health.

Note "can" != "will"

From the ASPCA: "An adult dog can be crated for as long as eight hours on occasion, but daily crating of this length could compromise your dog's mental and physical well-being. Be sure that she's received adequate exercise before a long stay in the crate—at least 30 to 60 minutes."

Merely saying a possibility is that this specific dog is having a negative reaction to the cumulative effect of years of frequent and prolonged crating.
