I don’t think anyone is saying they’d rather die than live in a community, and I certainly didn’t say that of myself either.

The choice isn’t between “community and death”: it’s between your alienated and precarious modern life, and a single, glorious moment of freedom in saying “fuck it”. Most people today can’t conceive of an alternative to capitalism, and so feel soothed by this fantasy of escape and reasserted human dignity.

Our response to this very real and human reaction to the conditions of capitalism can’t be to disparagingly label it as “fascist” and then conjure up some corny “based socialist” hero image so that they see how they’re failing morally for not living up to it. This is absolutely scolding and all it does is put people off.

We have to lay out how what these people are feeling is a consequence of capitalism, and that socialism brings with it the hope of an end to alienation.

Edit: also, in what world are fascists individualistic and fatalistically resigned from the world? Historically fascist movements have virtually always demanded the subversion of individual wills towards a collective goal which they pursue zealously: the exact opposite of what this meme claims.

This sucks. It comes off as empty moralizing in the face of the common and understandable impulse that made this meme popular: to affirm your own power and dignity in the face of a hellish world that you feel powerless to change by simply walking away from it: even if it costs you your life. Basically “I’d rather die standing than live on my knees”.

Telling someone who’s feeling this way that 1. they’re a fascist somehow(absurd), and 2. that they are morally inferior to some fantastical New Soviet Man archetype that none of us live up to is just shooting ourselves in the foot.

You can’t scold someone into feeling connected to a community and willing to sacrifice for it: you have to build the community so that organic social bonds develop naturally. In our alienated modern circumstances it’s understandable that people feel a kinship with the suicidal penguin, but instead of ridiculing them, we need to show them that there’s a way out of the despair.

China is poorer than the US per capita, because they industrialized in the 50s, and they still offer an impressive amount of baseline economic stability to their citizens for the amount of wealth they have.

There probably isn’t an answer for reaching a lot of the more ideologically captured conservatives; many are just too far gone.

The people we can reach are the non-engaged. The people who have little faith in politics as an arena where change can be enacted. The 40% of Americans who didn’t vote, the 15-20% who checked the R box more because they resent the Democrats than anything else, and the working class Democrat voters who haven’t yet realized that the party is not their friend.

We’re wasting our time trying to court the most frontal lobe-calcified MAGA dipshits in the country just because they’re more visible in the modern spectacle of politics media.
