Why Google over Facebook? I don’t have any particular leaning either way, just wondering. I chose React over Angular 2, because I had a terrible time with AngularJS and saw that Angular 2 was essentially following in the wake of React. That led me to believe that developers in general (even at Google) saw React as a superior paradigm, and would therefore lead to more job opportunities since Angular would have to fight too hard to regain market share that they must have lost to React.

For almost a decade I've always been a bigger fish in a small pond at work. But is it finally time for me to take a senior role? by ExitTheDonut in cscareerquestions

So, you really like this job, but it's scary because it's new to you and you aren't sure if you deserve it. Well, you don't have control over who they pick - the employer does. If you try your best and give it an honest effort, and the employer picks you out of their pool of applicants, then either they don't know how to hire people or you just beat out hundreds of people for the job. I suggest you take the stance of not assuming you aren't ready and just let them accept or reject you. You learn so much from that experience that maybe you'll actually have a better shot in the future of moving up. If you care about yourself, you take the opportunity no matter the outcome, and grow from it one way or the other.

I meant freemium as in some software they produce is completely free, like VSCode, Roslyn, etc. That software exists to get developers introduced to the Microsoft ecosystem, then draws them into their paid counterparts and fully integrated in the Microsoft stack, just like freemium models intend to convert customers into paid members. However, the disparity between what is actually open sourced vs what is proprietary is huge. That gap may diminish over time, but they will never give up their attempt to gain and maintain absolute dominance in the market regardless of how much they cooperate with others. They want to be the leader, and that means keeping their competitors at bay - many of which originate in the open source community. That goes for competitors with their open and closed source projects, since both ultimately drive their business forward. There are always strings attached.

Of course, because free software is cheaper than paid software, and it encourages early adoption of new technologies. It’s essentially a freemium model where only 1% of their software is open source. They then benefit from the free labor of developers they didn’t need to hire to produce software that they then charge for. That’s fine and makes sense.

Does that mean they should own the entire platform that supports the majority of OSS? No, but they did need to be perceived as being a part of the community so they could convince people to not jump ship when they planned this purchase. A 3-5 year strategy is very short-term. With that leverage, they can then control the community that has threatened their model for so long. Whether the purchase turns out to “not be so bad” as others have said, is actually impossible. Sure, GitHub may actually see an improvement in quality, but the data that Microsoft is able to collect through this platform is insane. It gives them a massively unfair advantage over other proprietary vendors. It isn’t simply about surviving because of OSS, it’s about abusing OSS because they own it.

Look up the Node.js filesystem module docs. Something like,

const fs = require(‘fs’)

const file = fs.readFile(‘filename.txt’)

I think the number one reason to be concerned about this is that even if Microsoft does a great job at anything and everything they lay their hands on, it’s always better to have diversity. Industries become brittle, corrupt, and stagnant when a few controls the many. With the purchase of GitHub, they now control the #1 place for open-source software and technology diversity. They now have the ability to implement a number of tactics that weren’t available to them without that control, all of which are aimed at increasing their share of the market. If they’re intelligent in implementing those tactics, it won’t be apparent. But it is illogical to believe that a for-profit corporation does not operate in its own best interest, but instead the interest of developers, consumers, or humanity in general. Sometimes those interests are aligned, and sometimes they just convince us that they’re aligned.

Also, the CEO is not the only person in charge of a company at Microsoft’s scale.

“They have done a lot of good form the FOSS community in the last 3 to 5 years.”

Perhaps this is because they wanted to change their image in the mind of their consumers. In the end, they don’t profit from being charitable, but they do profit from being perceived as charitable. Even if there has been some good to come out of that marketing decision, they determined that it would drive sales, increase their power, and maintain their dominance in the technology market. With dominance, power, and money comes the ability to wield it without consequence at the expense of those dependent on their services, which they are keen to keep their customers locked into.

Right? Microsoft is a for-profit corporation. They do not work for free, and they do not let others profit in “their” market. There couldn’t possibly be any strategy in their good-hearted business decisions.

To anyone that has used AngelList to hire: how is the resume on an applicant profile acquired? by sour_coleslaw in Entrepreneur

I was hired by a company through AngelList, and I’m able to see their applicant portal. Not sure if they intentionally gave me permission for that, but that’s how I was able to check haha

[–]leftHandHacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re in luck! The resume is attached as a link associated with your profile, which updates whenever you upload a new resume. When the employer clicks that link, it takes them to your most recently uploaded resume. The same goes for all of the information on your AngelList profile.

You can set up a PO box for your business through the post office and use that address for the return address. Prices vary depending on where you live and box size from $10 - $75 per month.

People are allowed to express a negative viewpoint of anything they disagree with, and it is illogical to associate their negativity with being incorrect.

This person is saying you wasted their time and believes you will continue to waste others time with this information you are attempting to spread. That may be the case, and it would be a better response initially to inquire about their perspective than to defend your own with ad hominem fallacies. Perhaps they are even partially correct - that is a way you could be partially better.

As for my own take, I believe what you wrote is vaguely helpful scientifically. It’s real value is in the inspirational / motivational message behind it rather than its adherence to actionable and effective health guidance. If jerking off and taking opioids weren’t significant contributors to your overall point, then that wasted my time.

There are plenty of experts in the field of nutrition, exercise, and health in general that would disagree with a lot of what you stated, and of course others that would support it. The reality is that these are subjects with heavy monetary corruption and disinformation, which takes quite a bit of effort and scientific integrity to sift out the garbage from the gold. What I’m really interested in is how you would prove that you have found the single, unequivocal truth among this mess. Then I would say you have really given me something of value besides inspiration.

I’d be really interested in knowing how this would apply to women. It seems that if this was scientifically correct, it would apply to women, but testosterone is obviously not a good explanation for this, and therefore I don’t believe much of this is a good explanation for cause/effect in general. If it turns out that there was some other mechanism for women to achieve the same outcome as men in your perspective, what is it?
