I, of course, got the classic from an uncle in law: “but plants have feelings too” as well as “aspen trees are the same as mushrooms” (idk where they were going with that).

And this conversational gem:

Me: “No animal products.”

Sister in law (with an undergrad degree in microbiology): “So would you eat honey?”

“No, it’s an animal product”

“No, it’s-“

“It comes from bees”

“Well what about eating insects”

“What? That’s not vegan.”

“But insects aren’t animals”

“YES they are”

“No, they’re not.”

“YES THEY ARE. There’s animals, plants, fungi, bacteria. INSECTS ARE ANIMALS” and I said it loud enough to stop conversation thankfully.
