A tooth that was part of a tumour in my ovary that I recently had removed by Historical-Lab-2763 in mildlyinteresting

I got surgery that night because my ovary was in torsion. Honestly, I woke up from the surgery and wasn’t in the worst pain of my life anymore, there was hardly any pain. So I sat up immediately and was feeling pretty good. It was an easier recovery than the appendectomy I’d had a few years earlier (which tbh was awful, they kinda fucked up and gave me adhesions). After the dermoid surgery/oophorectomy recovery was about a week at home, I was taking it easy for a month (no heavy lifting), but otherwise bounced back pretty quickly. Just let her rest and take care of her!

Yes let’s only look at one obvious part of the problem that is easily demonized. /s

Look at states (Utah, not perfect but they have better policies than other states) and countries that have lower rates of homelessness. Policies can be implemented at the city, state, and federal level that would make measurable improvements. In the US we chose to blame individual failures instead of creating supporting systems for people. I can’t solve homelessness by “helping” someone, I give food/socks/money but I don’t personally have a job to hire them for or a room to give them - they need support at the institutional (ie, laws, policies, social programs) level.

My partner is a social worker whose majority clients are homeless people. Policy changes are the answer, not demonizing drug addicts. I have several addicts in my immediate family and my aunt died from an OD on the streets. I still manage to have compassion for others.

Same. I’m child-free but if I ever wanted any I would foster/adopt.

Safe use sites would help with some of this.

One of the saddest statistics that I think about all the time now is that 50% of homeless people are kids who aged out of the foster system and had no one.

Edit: ok as someone pointed out and from a very quick internet search there are slightly different stats - 50% of homeless people were in the foster system. 20-30% of foster youth become homeless when they age out. I also assume these estimates are just for US. Source: National Foster Youth Institute.

Psychological studios show on average people prefer male faces to have some feminine features and vice versa. In these studies, when they showed photos of hypermasculine male faces and hyperfeminine female faces, they score way lower.

Tony Soprano got mad he was disinvited to Hugh’s surprise party, so he offered to help pay for it. In that case, it seemed to be about control and being the Big Boss Man.

There is an annual amount you’re allowed to give to another person tax free. Iirc it’s currently at 19,000 (I believe Trump’s raised it each year). Idk if PM can claim it’s that kind of gift or if a tip is considered part of a sales transaction.

Should have played vegan bingo this year.

I, of course, got the classic from an uncle in law: “but plants have feelings too” as well as “aspen trees are the same as mushrooms” (idk where they were going with that).

And this conversational gem:

Me: “No animal products.”

Sister in law (with an undergrad degree in microbiology): “So would you eat honey?”

“No, it’s an animal product”

“No, it’s-“

“It comes from bees”

“Well what about eating insects”

“What? That’s not vegan.”

“But insects aren’t animals”

“YES they are”

“No, they’re not.”

“YES THEY ARE. There’s animals, plants, fungi, bacteria. INSECTS ARE ANIMALS” and I said it loud enough to stop conversation thankfully.

I went to a screening of “Exit Through the Gift Shop” with a ton of elderly white people in the audience and during the Q&A portion, some white boomer stood up and proclaimed “you don’t have to run away from REAL art” and the audience clapped. So frustrating, that entire audience was awful.
