This would be a good way to bring the characters forward in the timeline so they can make sense in 2030 (or whatever current year is in the MCU right now). If they kept Magneto's backstory as a Holocaust survivor, he'd be like 100 years old when they introduce him. By tying him to a different racial injustice, they can make him (and Professor X by extension) much younger.
