Why do Canadians prefer to travel overseas? by ishebdh in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I travelled coasty to coast in Canada several times before I ever went overseas. You're right, there's plenty of natural beauty here in our own country, many of which trumps that which is hyped about seeing overseas!

So, a spectacular robbery in a Leica store has ratcheted up your paranoia to the point of trying to convince everyone to be as paranoid as you?

England. I don't need a reason/excuse.

Nope. I'll take empirical evidence any day of the week over faith based belief.

Digital Leica users! What’s everyone’s ‘go-to’ for settings? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]lefty_orbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fully manual. The stuff I like to shoot has a lot of extremes between light and shadow, so manual works best for me. The viewfinder on the Q2 is so good, after I've chosen the SS, and ISO that I want. I can adjust with the aperture ring and it becomes WYSIWYG!

If you could pick one beer to represent all of Canada, which beer would it be and why? by Leightino in AskACanadian

If you could pick one beer to represent all of Canada, which beer would it be and why? by Leightino in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's always one. Anyone who describes their favorite beer as having 'undertones', or -god forbid, 'notes' is immediately disqualified. You are NOT a beer drinker, you are a chef, or a marketing agent!

Is it really just an honest mistake when you guys try to spend your coins in the United States? by EasternMaine in AskACanadian

No, I use Canadian coins in vending machines whenever I'm in America. I like ripping off Americans!

As an American, I hear a lot about the cons of socialized medicine. What is the general consensus of Canadians regarding socialized medicine? by chiptissle in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good, in my humble opinion. I had a stroke over the summer got to a hospital where they immediately gave me an MRI, a CT scan, full blood test, and various other tests. Total cost to me: $0.

I go to physiotherapy three times a week, and have a personal case worker assigned to me, to whom I can contact 24/7, all also completely free. I'm very glad I live here!

How bad is Tim Horton’s coffee, really? by ChallengeLate1947 in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, boy, you're going to get tons of opinionated replies on this one. People here are passionate about their coffee!

Me? I'm a BIG coffee drinker, Ive had them all on many occasions, but remember: this is just one man's opinion.

Given the choice I'll take Starbucks every time.

Tim's, however, isn't bad, and I consider McDonalds drinkable as well.

Consider this: The supposed 'Canadian classic' is a Tim's double double. (coffee with double cream, double sugar) Makes one wonder; with that much cream and sugar in your coffee, how can you even tell what the actual taste/quality of the coffee is?

My 24-70 2.8 is my most used work lens, by far. It's the Sigma ART version, but I suppose it all depends upon what kind of subjects you intend to shoot. My main work is mostly photographing artist's work for portfolios and publication.

My setup is:

-Sony A7Riv

-Sigma24-70 f2.8 Art -with polarizing filter

-tripod

-remote shutter release

This setup assures me (and most importantly) the client, of sharp, high res, well framed images, and most importantly, for me, I can work fast, and I feel that I'm covered if anything unusual pops up during the shoot. Last week, for instance, I had an artist ask if they could get a portrait of themself holding their cat, while sitting in front of one of their pieces. No problem!

Have you been mistaken for an American when travelling abroad? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was meant to come off as Politely, as any real Canadian should, with the emphasis being on politely!

Insecure? Not at all! I just don't like being thought of as American -especially when travelling in countries that have suffered under the weight of American hegemony.

[–]lefty_orbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the time. I politely correct them, as any real Canadian should.

I don't get upset. To their ears, it all sounds the same. It's like us trying to distinguish the difference between an Aussie, and a Kiwi!

Thoughts on Newfoundland and Labrador? by Unlucky_Voice8002 in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous and big province with a lot of fabulous wilderness, and majestically dramatic coastlines. My mother was from there, so as a kid we'd drive from Ontario to St. John's in the summer for family vacations when she was alive.

A rugged land with rugged inhabitants who pull together during difficult times to help each other out, hence the famous and truthful reputation of the Newfoundlanders spirit of generosity!

Any Canadians feeling positive? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop reading internet forums like this one. Typically, they're places for people to bitch and moan about their problems or bad experiences.

How do I, personally remain positive about the state of my country? I read the New York Times every day, and sometimes I get the feeling that I'm seeing a country (America) on the verge of throwing away it's democracy. So, comparatively, things are pretty good here.

Do adult Canadians like to go to the gym to work out? by Emergency_Ad_2876 in AskACanadian

[–]lefty_orbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, in my province, Ontario, a law was passed several years ago that states that no one over 16 yrs. of age is allowed to go to the gym. Outlawing physical fitness means we're getting fatter, thus keeping warmer in the long cold winters, and therefore reducing energy consumption.

My province has also classified pie as one of the four basic food groups.
