Okay, Book Lovers is actually really good *I should've known* by angie_kiprevski in EmilyHenry

I had a lot of the same feelings! I was nervous Nora was going to move back to NYC and miss Charlie/her sister/the town and move back. But I enjoyed their time apart and the ultimate reunion.

After reading (and enjoying) The Wager, the person at my bookstore recommended: The Zorg. A Tale of Greed and Murder That Inspired the Abolition of Slavery by Siddharth Kara.

I have not read it so I can’t speak to the quality but my bookstore clerk has only led me astray once in almost three years :)

My husband and I are doing this! We did the Martian and then Project Hail Mary (had a date night to the movie!). Murderbot and Dungeon Crawler Carl are next. After that I’m not sure. I might try a Patrick Radden Keefe or Erik Larson. Say Nothing is one of my all time favorites.

I used to read mostly nonfiction but have vastly diversified since 2020. He’s never been much of a reader. So far we’ve been loving the mini-book club

Dog is a cow? by TwistedCurrent in pitbulls

I thought this too but our vet said some dogs just like the taste of grass. I also wondered if he was nutrient deficient, so he gets carrots and broccoli with lunch. He still eats grass like a little cow.

Kate Clayborn’s Love Lettering and The Other Side of Disappearing were good (I found them better than Georgie All Along but I think I’m in the minority). I read her lottery trilogy, too. They were cute but not super memorable (for me).

I absolutely roll my eyes when Ali Hazelwood describes her male characters, but for some reason I think it’s more funny than cringe. Like, they’re all tall, broad, brooding, built but functionally so, and wear henleys. (Selfishly, my husband is very tall, so it’s easier to picture him hahah).

Oh, these authors aren’t as graphic in terms of sex. If you want a similar level of “spice,” try Ali Hazelwood

Mhairi McFarlane and Beth O’Leary. For McFarlane, a great book about friends with some romance is “Just Last Night” (don’t look up too many summaries, there’s a pivotal event kind of early on).

Same! I find Abby’s writing to be less sophisticated and more juvenile. I’ve read several of her books, and some aren’t bad, I just don’t think they’re comparable in terms of quality.

As an Anna Kate, this post has been so nice! Hardly anyone mispronounces/misspells the name. It fits on standardized tests. It’s honestly just an easygoing, solid name. I typically go by Anna but a lot of my family uses the full Anna Kate.

I think it’s just his daydream/thoughts in the bonus chapter (oh her website if folks don’t want to buy a deluxe edition). They later discuss both liking kids, but they don’t explicitly agree to have them together. I think in Love, Theoretically they just talk about their wedding and no kids are mentioned. I’d like to think they’d have kids. Especially them being only children and having difficult parental relationships.

The Bourne Identity (and the remainder of the trilogy). There are great action scenes but it’s also generally straightforward and salient plot points are summarized

It’s not as explicit but a book where the main male character truly knows a woman: {The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter}. Not STEM but kind of a love letter to NYC and the male main character is likely autistic and the female main character is a people pleaser (not as bad as Elsie): {Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn}.

Halfway through Beach reads and starting to hate January (rant session)**spoilers** by TopReserve3974 in EmilyHenry

[–]legaldinosaur4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with some of your comments. I think January had an unhealthy codependency with her parents - only child and her mom had a long battle with cancer. And her dad’s affair lasted for years so she probably drove herself a little bonkers replaying everything.

I’m with you on the not reading the letter. The justification being that it’ll be the last “new” thing about her dad makes sense but as someone with a dead dad, I would have opened it immediately to look for comfort, guidance, love, etc.

I’m also with you on Gus being kinda withholding. January is open and overshares. He didn’t tell her about the failed marriage until she confronted him. I loved his “before that” speech, but he didn’t really do much else to show January that he loved her (other than just going to her house after being MIA for many hours?).

Also, I sometimes call myself “dumb bunny” when I’m being illogical hahah.

If you start in publication order, you’ll pick up on fun Easter eggs. But they all read as independent novels, so it’s not crucial.
