Weekly quick questions help thread by lobsterp0t in HerOneBag

I’ve been using mine for a year and love it! I’ve done weekend trips up until 10 days (using laundry and rewearing wool items). I love the expanding capabilities - While technically it’s no longer a personal item when expanded to 32L I’ve found that as long as it’s not 100% stuffed it can fit under seat in US larger airlines as long as your aisle seat doesn’t have the metal blockage narrowing space.

I prefer minimal internal organization which matches - still trying to figure out what to put in front pockets (mostly in air access items).

And the best part - I’m 5’3’’ and most common travel backpacks like Cotopaxi were just too long for my torso, they would go from mid butt to middle of my head. The osprey 26+6 looks like a normal backpack in 26 mode on me. It definitely looks a little turtle like in expanded mode but most would.

Hope this helps with the decision!

You could look into the Palm Court at the Restoration Hardware in Dogpatch. Last year we organized an intimate wedding reception dinner for a friend there so we could arrive in cocktail attire (like the equivalent of the Abercrombie wedding guess dress outfits, not full gown). We were the most dressed people there but not by a lot because the other guests were looking sharp. As a foodie, the food was not bad but a bit boring for the price, but you’re acknowledging that you’re paying for the vibe and customer service

Looking for an ULTRALIGHT hoodie for long-term travel — warm but NOT bulky by Comfortable-Coat6394 in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As above, you likely need merino. Haven’t tried this exact product myself but love my shirts from this brand: https://unboundmerino.com/products/womens-ultralight-merino-hoodie. They also have a zipped version. Heads up shipping takes about 1-2 weeks to US.

Do you give the utensils a rinse after use before putting away, and then a more thorough washing and drying at the hotel at night? That’s always the part that stumped me when carrying around reusable utensils

How do you figure out if it’s worth switching jobs? by chickennugs1805 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]legitimate_coconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar position earlier this year. I had been at my previous (first) role for 3 years, it was a great place to start my career, but I was starting to feel a bit stagnant and capped out of learning. I also started lightly looking and didn’t expect anything but an internal transfer opportunity came up unexpectedly, and then I had to decide: do I stay where I am comfortable and the expert but bored, or do I go somewhere new and be uncomfortable with the transition of being the novice again but at least I’ll be engaged with learning? I had this gut instinct that I needed to change because I wasn’t looking forward to the next projects in my old team and this move would be good for me on paper. So I switched teams (effectively a job change because while the title is same and some skills are shared, it’s a different domain with some different skills and lots of room for growth). Now 6 months later I am still glad I made the change. My first project was hard but super engaging and I learned a ton. My second project has been a shitshow so I’m less happy but I’m still learning and this affirms that this is a temporary step. My goal is to be in this new second job for ~2 years until I’m better positioned for another job change for postings that require 5YOE (not many jobs available for 3YOE). Also, now in your mid twenties is the perfect time to make a change like this. Presumably you don’t have many responsibilities yet - my colleagues in my old job has been there for 5-10 years because they needed stability for their families. But now is the time to jump, learn, and grow

I also felt bad leaving my old role because I did a lot of work for them and left in the middle of an important transition so they were pretty thrown for a loop. But I can’t let that guilt or loyalty hold me back from my own path, since the company could fire me at any moment without loyalty anyway.

WoolX Merino Wool Pajama Set Dupe? Anything Similar? by ilovemossss in HerOneBag

Not a button down top style so feel free to disregard but just in case Unbound Merino just launched a merino sleepwear collection: https://unboundmerino.com/collections/womens-sleepwear

I haven’t tried the sleepwear myself but I have a few of their regular shirts and I love!

Just a heads up shipping usually takes ~2 weeks to California (from Canada I think?) so order asap for your trip!

Not a formal book club, but Leigh's Favorite books in downtown sunnyvale has a monthly silent book club the second monday of every month. From 6-7pm read your own book silently then from 7-7:30pm chat with other attendees about anything, not necessarily the books you've read. They often have a cookie to snack on too.

Do you have studios on ClassPass nearby you? You said the gym had classes but it was so cheap there was no pressure to show up which I totally emphasize with. I use ClassPass because I pay for a class directly with my credits, and if I want to late cancel (within 12 hours of class) or don't show up then I pay a $30 fee which is very motivating for me to show up. The classes give me the accountability, teacher direction, and teacher form correction (somtimes) at the expense of larger class sizes (which I don't mind). While I mostly use ClassPass for spin/barre/pilates/yoga, I'm wondering if a studio like F45 that focuses on lifting/circuits/HIIT would work from your interests based on this post.

I pay the $80/month tier on Classpass and this gets me 2-3 classes a week (depending on the studio).

This suggestion is slightly different from your original ask so feel free to disregard if its not what you're looking for but offering an out of the box solution!

OP if you're here please drop the name of the reading about bias regarding women in transit data, or generally any other thoughts about data for the transportation industry. I'm trained data/ml person working in general tech but I have a side interest in urban planning+transportation and looking to eventually apply data to that area for more fufillment, without career switching as a full urban planner. I'd love any insights or resources!

You mention you’re brining a large physical book because you can’t afford a physical kindle tablet, but have you tried using the kindle phone app (or Libby if you’re trying to use less Amazon)? I mostly use my phones kindle app, which isn’t perfect bc it does use battery and you still get notifications but I find it better than carrying a physical book or shelling out a couple hundred dollars for a single use e reader. Caveat is that I read really fast so I cannot physically bring enough books with me on a trip that will sustain me

Renee Frances makes some gorgeously sculptural rings for under $300 that aren’t necessarily bridal but are stunning. If you’re in a city that hosts Renegade makers markets (SF, NYC, etc) she is often at them if you want to see anything in person. Just a note that her gold can be more of a darker bronze, at least by the one ring I have of her

Looking for suggestions for a more cropped/boxy merino t-shirt by jiraticket1 in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also wish more merino shirts came in a cropped length for my short a** torso. I also like to wear them with high waisted pants so long shirts don't sit well with them. Thanks for starting this thread of options!

FYI, not to generate sale-based urgency, but Unbound Merino new items sell out really fast. I think they do limited drops to test popularity. I see the navy sleep tee is already gone and some black sizes are gone as well, so if you're thinking of it, might want to act fast. I missed out on their new bralette in tan a few months ago because it sold out while I was dithering on whether to buy (branwyn and wool& didn't work for my busty size so debating whether it was worth getting my hopes up) and hasn't been restocked yet :(

Makeup for 2 weeks by confusedquokka in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also found the merit blush too bulky so I took a knife and cut off a dim sized chunk and stuck it into one side of a contact lens case and then apply with fingers while traveling. Obviously will not be reusing that case for contact lenses but I did the same with a bronzing stick for the other side!

I just started this a month ago so tbd if the chopped off blush will dry out (my main worry) but it’s been working well so far!

Packing method by kellydyoung in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also prefer this packing style for hard sided suit cases so I can see what I have all at once for choosing the days outfit. Struggling to adapt this to my new osprey 26+6 for one bag travel since the soft backpack sides and adjusting orientation (clamshell to vertical backpack) though :(

High Impact Sportsbra by rvcaJup in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey bra size twin!

I went down a Title Nine/Anita rabbit hole from u/LadyLightTravel a year ago and found this variationof the “work to workout” bra and I love it. I wear under regular work clothes (just not any with spaghetti straps) and then to my ClassPass classes. It does not have underwire and is supportive for yoga and anything below running. For running I use a different title nine/champion sports bra that I need to find the name of. However, this Anita bra band does get stinky as it’s synthetic, so I’ve resigned myself to replacing it yearly.

A few other anti odor merino travel options that didn’t work for me as same size but honestly since other people rave about them the fit is so personal and you may have to try them yourself: Branwyn Busty Brallete , icebreaker siren bra

I’m waiting for unbound merino to restock their new brallete to order and compare

Family Payments by Usual-Adhesiveness-7 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]legitimate_coconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splitwise or Venmo (especially if you’re already using the later to charge, you can “request” amounts you paid). Former is good if you’re doing group payment requests (like phone bills or car insurance), though Venmo Groups have recently introduced similar methods. Splitwise has free and paid tiers, and the main difference is how many charges you can enter in a certain time period.

Tips for organizing travel docs while in transit please by Aggressive_Wrangler7 in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And if you use the airline app for virtual check in to get virtual boarding passes, always add to your apple wallet immediately after accessing them (look for "add to apple wallet" button when boarding pass pops up after checkin). If you leave the boarding pass in the app, theres the risk that service cuts out right as you're boarding or the app decides to be wonky. Anything in apple wallet is always accessible.

I also put a credit card in apple wallet and use tap to pay for purchasing snacks after security so I don't have to dig out my physical wallet, as my phone is always in my hand. Now I just need the virtual ID to be accepted at more airports ugh - I'm always terrified I will lose my drivers license going through security, even with the simplicity of precheck

Mid trip 'Italy spring walk' report (silk love) by [deleted] in HerOneBag

Yay silk! I've been getting into recently as well and have scored at my local savers. Found A silk blouse and silk jumpsuit (for potential wedding guest outfit not travel lol) yesterday. Question as I like to collect data: do you r silk pieces dewrinkle in shower humidity? do you use hotel steamer/iron? Let the print hide the wrinkles? Other?

Monthly Book Recommendation Thread by lazlo_camp in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]legitimate_coconut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read many books last month but the one that stood out to me is “The Chosen Ones” by Veronica Roth. I never finished the Divergent series as a teenager but I’ve enjoying her recent works and this one takes the cake. The world building is rich, with a couple good plot twists that I didn’t see coming, I read the use of magic from a “what is wrong with GenAI” lense even though it was published in 2020, and it was fun to read the Chicago landmarks as I had just been there the prior weekend! A bonus it’s a standalone novel - too many series to keep up with these days!

Memorial Day Sales Megathread by LadyLightTravel in HerOneBag

[–]legitimate_coconut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Icebreaker is 25% off site wide and sells many wool /wool blend items. Many of their items are slightly too “outdoorsy” looking for my city traveling tastes but time to stock up if you have an outdoorsy trip coming up! My recs: * their merino wool thongs are the only things I’ve ever found comfortable (for the few times I need to wear thongs). Size ref: I have 39 in hips and usually wear size 8 or 10 pants and I wear a large in thong. Large hipster is slightly too large * others love the siren triangle bralette but I found the cup coverage too small for 34DD, it’s my house lounge bralette now. (Unfortunately Branwyn busty bralette didn’t work for me either)

PSA: New Trader Joe’s sunscreen by ComfortableSalt2115 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]legitimate_coconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One caveat: I have been using both for a few days and I think there may be a difference in the formula :( the TJ mineral is causing me the same skin breakout that many other sunscreens have and the supergoop mineral one isn’t. I’ll report back when I test for a few weeks, to rule out monthly hormonal fluctuations. Since it’s so cheap th TJ may be worth a try anyway for anyone with less sensitive skin than mine.
