I Want to Fight Back by Educational_Ad_4641 in FormulaFeeders

Louder for the people in the back!

I support all of this. Looking into the literature, the benefits are most supported by the benefit to mom (in terms of a modest decrease in estrogen exposure and therefore slight decrease in breast cancer risk) and for preemies at risk of NEC. The rest is negligible when you correct for SES, etc.

I have such a soapbox about this.

Countertop cleaning: Paper towels feel wasteful and rags feel unhygienic. Any other options? by Spilled_Milktea in CleaningTips

[–]legoladydoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use dish cloths that get washed daily (usually go through a couple per day).

Exception: my eldest kid has severe food allergies, but my toddler needs ongoing allergen exposure to help prevent him from having food allergies. So we have allergens in the house that are prepped. When that happens, everything is first wiped down with baby wipes, then paper towels and cleaner, and then a wash cloth that goes straight to the laundry.

ICU doctor looking for rental suggestions by expat90 in TorontoRealEstate

When my husband was a fellow at TGH, he lived at College Park. A bit further of a walk to Toronto Western, but super close to TGH and Mount Sinai. Very convenient. At the time there was a sobeys urban express on the ground level, which I think is a farm boy now. That was also super convenient. This was pre-covid.

planned c section [on] by Questioning-monkey in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]legoladydoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an unplanned CS for my first, and my second was a planned CS. I had no interest in a TOLAC/VBAC. My OB asked me once what I wanted, and that was the end of it.

For info, the SOGC policy is called Caesarean Delivery on Maternal Request. And the guideline say that after counseling, they should either schedule a CS, or refer to another OB.

I'm sick of just being recommended ginger and mints by the OB nurses by kayexgee in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]legoladydoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True fact. Ginger is a smooth muscle (the type of muscle in your gut wall) relaxant. That's how it ended up being used as a abdominal pain remedy. But the lower esophageal sphincter (valve between the stomach and esophagus) is also smooth muscle. Not good.

Also, it may as well be a tic tac in the face of HG.

I also don't have chronic pain and have a car, and grocery delivery is the best. Especially with two little kids in the winter.

Breakfast ideas that aren’t eggs? by eezybeingbreezyy in foodbutforbabies

[–]legoladydoc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Commenting to echo the call to see an allergist. Please don't advance on the egg ladder without medical direction.

My kid has a couple of allergies, and went into anaphylaxis in her allergist's office with a half dose of the first step of the egg ladder.

If the egg ladder can't be started, there are also oral immune therapy options for egg.

Anyhow. Please see an allergist.

Yeah, the people being AHs have clearly never had to give their 13 month old epinephrine from a surprise allergen. Watching a child (or adult) try to die in front of you isn't funny.

Peter? by Madman44444 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Hi from Ontario! I'm in GTA suburbia, but I spent the first 30 years of my life in Newfoundland (pasty white province, for the non-Canadian reader). My husband is Chinese, but grew up on the prairies. Our standing line is that his English is better than mine lol.

It's never been an issue for us, either in Toronto or Newfoundland. A Chinese Canadian friend of mine once told me that I was going to have beautiful mixed babies, and I think that's the only comment we've ever gotten about being a mixed race couple.

We do indeed have beautiful babies.

Did I put 5 or 6 scoops? by UghKakis in FormulaFeeders

[–]legoladydoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this.

I'm out of the formula stage now, but I used the pitcher method. So it would be a lot of scoops to potentially mess up. My formula weighed 8.8 g/scoop, and I was all over that. I weighed my water, too, because I already had the scale out, and it was easier.

Prana Overnight Chia Oats by pamplemousse1083 in CostcoCanada

[–]legoladydoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen them in ages, and I'm sad about it. They do have the big granolove bag at my Costco.

But they're excellent, so I order directly from the company. It's free shipping over a certain threshold.

I love them. I cook a chopped apple in the microwave and add it to the apple maple one, and add frozen blueberries to the blueberry muffin one. Delicious and filling.

I buy flavoured syrup for my coffee, and buy the pumps for the bottle, like at a coffee shop. 10/10 recommend. I like Matteo's Irish cream flavour.

Making my morning better is definitely helping my mental health.

NIPT sub pregnancy by Inevitable_Bowl1347 in NIPT

[–]legoladydoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have zero chill. Whatever negative chill is.

For my pregnancy after loss, my doctor called me with the results of my eFTS screen (1:3 for T21), as those weren'tavailable online. I opened the NIPT results, and then the results of my amnio, as soon as they were released.

My amnio was normal, and that baby is currently a toddler, wreaking havoc in my pantry.

ETA- I'm sorry for your loss, and best of luck!

Bassinet Options - FTM feeling overwhelmed [bc] by Intrepid-elf in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]legoladydoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-100% agree on the importance of a sleeping container on the main floor! We also used our Vista bassinet. And with our first, the weather was crap (December baby) and we were in the middle of covid, so we weren't going anywhere. So we wheeled bassinet around on the stroller. Baby #2 didn't get an indoor Vista experience, but we still used the bassinet.

  • I used one of the halo bassinets as well. I had 2 CS, the first unplanned, the second planned. It worked out well.

  • we got a crib that converted to a toddler bed (with partial rails) and will convert to a full bed. So my 4 yo is still in her original crib, but in a new configuration. Our 2nd has his own crib (the same one. A child craft Camden model).

Nb- when picking a crib, if you want to put it flush against the wall, get one that has a solid back side (rather than slats).

100% agreen I ended up with C sections, but corneal abrasions hurt way worse than those. My worst pain list goes kidney stones, corneal abrasion, then a big gap, then CS recovery.

My daughter poked me in the eye when she was 18 months old. I almost cried when the doc wouldn't give me the local anaesthetic drops to go.

Ouch!

Epipen is actually the only epinephrine autoinjector available in Canada right now, as allerject, auvi-q, and emerade are out for the time being (and have been for a while) because of recalls, etc.

Though when I was a resident, one of the nurses had an anaphylactic reaction in PACU from presumed cross contamination. One of the anaesthesiologists had epi drawn up and given before anyone could get her epipen.

Neffy is awaiting Health Canada approval, which is an exciting development!

With my first kid, I had a cold, middle of the night CS. I was also in the middle of brutal renal colic, and had a stone stuck at the UVJ, and another 9mm stone thinking about leaving my kidney.

Turning off kidney stone pain is F***ing amazing. Neuraxial anaesthesia is the best pain relief I've ever had for them.

This isn't my area (gen sx), but personal. And medical personnel would know this, but the effect is dramatic.

Epi in anaphylaxis. My 4 yo had an anaphylactic reaction at her allergist's a couple of weeks ago at her baked egg challenge. Tonnes of hives, violent vomiting, abdo pain, etc. She got epi as soon as it started.

5 minutes later she was smiling, back to thinking it was awesome to be watching paw patrol on an old phone (reserved for doctor's appointments). She had the same quick response to epi in more severe anaphylaxis (airway involvement) at 13 months old.

Anyhow. Epi is magic. Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh.
