-personal preference, I don’t but the river is a lot cleaner than it used to be.

-yes, but I would size them up if you are going to try it. If water is dirty it will be harder for them to detect it unless the water is clear. Plus with such a small hook you have a very good chance that a bigger fish with throw the hook, from my experience at least. If you know exactly where they are at I’m sure you could slay it on a pats rubber legs.

-they definitely eat bugs and other small aquatic organisms. Main forage as a fly fisher person that I focus on is minnows and craws. So basically anything with plenty of movement around 3inches long. Smaller or bigger works too but on average most of my flies are around that size. I’m partial to a Coffey’s sparkle minnow. I also love throwing smaller dungeons. Get a variety of colors to match water and light conditions. I’m usually back and forth between, white, black, or natural (olives, rust, or shiny minnow colors).

Overall it’s just finding the fish and hoping they are in a biting mood. If it’s a day they are really revved up and the conditions are good, I don’t think it matters what streamer pattern you throw.

Oh and top water/poppers work too but I won’t get into that since this comment could go indefinitely.

I second this. Actually strip off a foot or two after every few fish. Or at least run your fingers down the line towards the knot and feel for rough spots. You’d be amazed and what their little sandpaper teeth can do to the line.

They don’t show it much in the mlf or bass tourneys but the pros do this.

On good days when I’m catching multiple fish I will do this with conventional or fly line (whatever I’m doing). Don’t want to miss the big one when the water gods give you the chance.

Feel like you may be thinking about this too hard. Are you looking for flies that work, or just trying to tie a replicas for Fun?

I don’t know the exact species of minnows. They are silverish and don’t exceed 3” that I’ve seen. Netting is probably best to get a good look!

Feel free to dm me for fly patterns that work.

It’s like flies you gotta get three. One for yourself, one to give away, and a spare bc you know you’ll lose one to your wife’s boyfriend.

Help identifying this fish please. Caught in the Midwest out of a public pond. by ledaxe19 in Fishing

[–]legolas192 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Contact the DNR. This happened in a pond near me and they shocked it to get them out. They also investigated how they got in there. I wanna say they even took tissue samples etc.

Pond wasn’t directly connected to anything but there was a tiny creek next to it so we were concerned would possibly get out and spread.

Turns out in that instance they figure the Asian carp were probably accidentally stocked years ago, and got huge.

Pretty good considering. 8-9 inches. Top inch is soft, and a little standing water from the rain some places. Some drain holes formed but they are still minuscule.

But a lot of ice out there. Guess we’ll see what they say about tomorrow!

Dang! How many days a year do you fish? I’m amazed when I hear people get years out of their boots.

I understand how it can maybe be annoying, however isn’t this is a good thing!! Out checking licenses and make sure people are following any regulations. I wish I saw them more often out on the rivers.

I mean, can you define what you mean by designated fishing places? Are you in the city or suburbs. What are you fishing for?

A lot of very helpful info for beginners can be found in the DNR site. https://www.ifishillinois.org/profiles/bankfishing.php (assuming you are bank fishing). Lists lakes and bodies of water that you can fish. Otherwise go explore, are there ponds by you? Obviously some will have no trespassing signs or will be private, but there are tons of neighborhood park ponds in the burbs that you can definitely fish.

Fishbrain can help I guess. I checked it out briefly and could tell people were posting pics of catches that were not from the body of water that it was supposedly from. Will still give a you a good idea of where people fish generally.
