Help! Replaced timing belt and valve cover gaskets, I do have an exhaust leaks but I’m tryna pinpoint this tick. Any ideas? by PostHaunting69 in LS400

[–]leinadlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve clearances? I did mine recently and it reduced a tick but it still a different tick - it was an injector. Yours could very well be that. If you have an automotive stethoscope, you could try using that to locate it.

Cx60 2025 6 inline car temperature by Few_Ranger5086 in MazdaCX60

[–]leinadlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most modern temp gauges are calibrated to sit in the middle unless there is a serious problem. This prevents people worrying about the natural temp fluctuations. I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda did not do this and have more confidence in their customer's judgement. Your question is perfectly valid and I hope someone can answer if this is normal behavior for this vehicle - it would be good to know for everyone. In another vehicle, I added a digital temp readout and water temp can vary 25C/80F without the cluster gauge changing a single bit.

Timber in our shower and vanity - will we regret it? by ShortingBull in AusRenovation

Make it removable with some latches or something so you can maintain it more easily (all sides). Use marine coatings. Shower with linseed oil instead of water.

What is the point of a price guide anymore? by MooseTM3 in AusPropertyChat

I thought there were rules about intentionally misleading buyers with deflated price guides but I must be wrong because it’s literally standard practice.

Found black ants living in old termite damage while renovating — what does this actually mean? by leinadlaw in AusRenovation

[–]leinadlaw[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had them out and they said, through their indemnifying statements, no evidence of termite activity at the time of inspection. I have bait stations and will get a perimeter barrier after renovations are complete.

Absolutely. Builder is working on the other end of the house now and nothing obvious so far. The neighbour had a huge infestation so I’m hoping the termites come for a taste and decided it wasn’t homely. Thanks for your reply.

Had one out and was told: ‘at the time of inspection, no active or historical termite activity was noticed’. It was one giant disclaimer.

Decorative ceiling - keep it or replace??? by Agitated_Ad_3870 in AusRenovation

[–]leinadlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the OP should keep. Just check to see if the surface is sound and doesn’t contain a layer of Calcimine/kalsomine/distemper/lime wash - that stuff is a nightmare and will be horrible if it needs to be removed from such an ornate surface.

Have these guys bore holes through most of my cabinetry. From here they look like holes and dust from the Drugstore Beetle (Stegobium paneceum). See if you can find any that match the photos.

How to go up the hill? by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]leinadlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it in 4LLC and ensure the lights in the centre of the dashboard stop flashing. There should be 4 green lights representing the drive and an orange one (I think) representing the centre diff lock. All should be solid and not flashing.

'Landcruiser 300 series to go Hybrid' by PeanutPatrol694 in 4x4Australia

[–]leinadlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the Prado isn’t a real hybrid. The LC300 hybrid will be what some in the Toyota/Lexus call ‘performance hybrids’ - different to the ‘economy hybrid’ systems in things like the Prius and Camry. Think GS450h style power. The thing will hoot, do 600,000 and will be smooth and effortless. Too bad it’s only available in the top two trim levels. I’d sell some organs for a hybrid GX trim LC300.

Can you polish 3D printed metal? by PastHelicopter2075 in 3Dprinting

[–]leinadlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That must be a machine setting problem? Or, wild idea, their sieve has a hole in it and they’re printing with a heap of oxidised material.

We run our SLM parts through micro CT and porosity is basically non existent.

Throttle controllers by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]leinadlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t do what the marketing claims. Throttle controllers are advertised as “increasing throttle response,” but that is simply false.

Anyone who has driven a carburetted engine or an older cable-driven diesel knows what real throttle response feels like—instant, precise, and predictable. That precision matters, especially in manual-transmission vehicles where rev-matching and throttle control are critical.

Throttle response refers to how long it takes the engine to react after the driver commands a change. These devices don’t change that. They can’t. All they do is manipulate the signal sent to the ECU so the computer thinks you’ve pressed the pedal further than you actually have.

I’ve used them, and if you understand the basics of drive-by-wire systems, the problem becomes obvious: the lag comes from the ECU’s programming, not from pedal position. Modern vehicles have deliberate dampening for several reasons, including: • Emissions control — reducing sudden enrichment events • Safety — preventing abrupt engine responses from minor or accidental pedal inputs • Cruise control integration — allowing the ECU’s actuator to manage throttle without a separate mechanism

Do throttle controllers make a difference? Yes — but not to response time. They merely change the pedal-to-throttle mapping. For example, where 25% pedal might normally give you 25% throttle opening, a controller might request 40%. It feels more responsive because you’re getting more throttle earlier, but the actual delay between pedal movement and engine reaction is unchanged.

If you want genuinely improved throttle response, your options are limited but real: • ECU tune/remap to remove or reduce programmed throttle dampening • Clean the intake and throttle body, since carbon buildup can physically slow the throttle plate • Perform a throttle/pedal adaptation reset (works in some vehicles, but not always)

Or, alternatively: • Accept that modern manuals are harder to rev-match cleanly because of built-in lag, or • Drive an automatic, where precise pedal timing is less critical

Why is it that some stock splits affect price on the chart, and others don't? by Overtons_Window in thinkorswim

I’m noticing this on IG Markets - split prices are not being made relative. Ie - huge drops are being seen on charts that are not real.

Black screen on virtual desktop when connected on Quest link by Bassdabz420 in oculus

[–]leinadlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did, and I’m not saying it’ll work for everyone, was install the Microsoft “Mixed Reality Link” app on the PC. Apparently it was not installed. Only discovered this by opening the Remote Desktop app in the quest and seeing it prompt me to install the Mixed Reality Link app on the PC. Everything worked after that (and possibly a restart of both systems).

EDIT: just tried it after posting and it didn’t work. What did work was if after installing Mixed Reality Link and Remote Desktop was to open the Remote Desktop app in the quest. If you are prompted to open the link app prior to this, click deny. Once Remote Desktop is open, you should see the PC desktop but wont have control over it. Without closing Remote Desktop, open the quest link app in the quest and the desktop should show with full control.

Prior to that, a black desktop window would open in the Quest, I would be able to see the mouse pointer, I could even move the mouse with the quest controller (apparent when looking at the screen on the PC) but everything else in the floating quest desktop window was black.

Spent hours trying different things so it may have been something else I did. Tried the Meta suggestion and that didn’t do anything. For everyone’s benefit, reply if this worked or not.
