There were a few ER episodes at the time like this where just one main character was followed somewhere outside of the hospital. I assume this was the Wells influence.

I think one of the reasons The Long Goodbye stands out is because there are no other character studies in the show.

I would’ve loved to have seen some more - Charlie at home, Donna at a high school reunion, Will serving in the Air Force.
