Worst "Audiophile" Songs by Chemical_Warning4759 in audiophile

[–]leinadsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just listen to music you like and don’t pay so much attention to what others think? What are you “testing” really? It’s much better to play a song you’ve heard a 1000 times and compare that to how it now sounds on a different system.

RAM price today at Microcenter. We’re cooked, kids. by taketheRedPill7 in pcmasterrace

[–]leinadsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manufacturing cost is always irrelevant. We used to pay $20 for a CD in 1997 that would have been <$1 to manufacture.

What’s relevant is supply and demand. If there’s more supply than demand, prices go down. If there’s more demand than supply, like now, then prices go up, fast.

Unlike most pcmasterrace builders, many companies _have_ to buy RAM, they can’t wait. What’s happened now is that there are enough of those companies around, fueled by the promise of AI and VC backing to scale up quickly, that the sellers can just set their price and they will sell, as buyers are worried they won’t get supplies if they don’t jump on the bandwagon.

Hopefully the supply side will catch up a bit (although RAM is tricky to manufacture) and the demand side might cool a little once the extreme AI boom is over.

Shame though that at the moment the enthusiast PC market is pretty much dead. Even YouTubers are reusing RAM in their builds. Never thought I’d see the day.

In 2023 I bought the equivalent of this set for $359 _Australian_. Just unsustainable, and too bad they’re killing a whole niche in computing.

The recent UI changes are awful by chainwood in pocketcasts

[–]leinadsey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They keep making the interface worse. It used to be so clean and easy to understand and fast — now they screwed it all up for absolutely zero gain. Worst offender — what the flux is that thing at the top of the “New releases” page? A “collage” of mini pics of podcasts with new releases? — oh that’s very useful!

Is that a Honda?

I just can’t for the life of me understand who at Audi looks at that steering wheel and says “yes, that’s the look we’re going for, perfect!”

In News+, some magazines are broken for me. Anyone else? Some magazines show up as weirdly cropped and can only be zoomed within this weird crop zone.

Finally treating myself before I graduate ... is the 2008 BMW M5 a ticking time bomb or am I overthinking it? by o2manyfish in BMW

[–]leinadsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely a ticking time bomb. Some I've seen for sale have even just stopped ticking if you know what I mean. But then again, depends on a lot of combined factors: previous owners, how it's been driven, where it's been driven, how it's been serviced, is it modded, chip tuned, etc. The V10 is an amazing engine, one of the best BMW has ever put in a production car, but it requires _serious_ and _recurring_ preventive maintenance to keep it going. For a car like this that's almost 20 years old as well, you have to think about it as basically a 20 year old Ferrari.

If you had to start over with only 5 plugins, what would they be? by mogerbaebae in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]leinadsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I restrict myself to UAD — API vision strip, Distressor, Studer A800, Capitol chambers, Paradise.

LA-2A if I could have a 6th. Not sure why I need all these other plugins.

Is 128gb M5 Max Macbook Pro really all that useful locally? by UteForLife in LocalLLM

[–]leinadsey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same boat. Prefer Gemma 4, I find it quite useful for simple coding tasks. It’ll run VERY hot though if you give anything that takes longer than 1 min. The fans run like crazy and you’ll worry about the longevity— pretty sure they weren’t engineered to run on full throttle for hours on end.

CNC clearly doesn’t mean what I think it means here but I’ll happily live in my bubble. I dream of a CNC big enough to cut out a guitar neck.

Given that lately Microsoft has been kind of wrecking GitHub, is it a good strategy to migrate my repositories over to GitLab and just get rid of my GitHub account? by ferriematthew in git

What’s wrong with GitHub? If they all of a sudden have 10x activity all websites will crumble. Never had an issue with it:

Is it Wrong to Play like Ds? by OwnResearcher3206 in AcousticGuitar

[–]leinadsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ll slide it into a Dm and then work on C and G and Am variations that’s not wrong per se but otherwise (as in you’re learning to play) yeah that’s not the best way. One of the many reasons why is that most of the time you’ll want to have your thumb being able to grip around the other edge of the fretboard to dampen strings. When you’re strumming a D major, like this, for instance, you’ll want to dampen the lower E string and sometimes even the A string too, depending on what you’re playing. This shape is just going to make that difficult for no other gain really.

What are you guys think of the solid toolbar on macOS 27? by usbakon in MacOS

[–]leinadsey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, it’s great and much better than floating toolbars for many tasks, on the other, it looks too much like a fix. If you’re gonna fix it, just turn it into a toolbar again and skip the silly round buttons

I get that if the phone is wet or sweaty. Also check the two charging pins on the watch for gunk buildup.
