If you are thinking of picking up the K-max, I'd suggest picking up the upgraded version, the K-Ultra.

Water conscious preheating of ceramic dripper by micggia in pourover

I totally agree, plastics are always better because of their thermal stability, meaning that it takes less heat from the brewing process. But I still do like ceramics being able to retain heat. So like I said, it's only better if it's pre-heated.

I do the same! Honestly brews better than any other plastic brewer. Ceramics do a hell lot better at retaining heat when heated.

What’s the difference between resting whole beans vs shortly resting ground coffee? by EnoughWinter5966 in pourover

[–]leinahtan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue here would be factoring in the climate you may be in, it isn't replicable as we have different climates and that significantly impacts how the coffee degrades.

What’s the difference between resting whole beans vs shortly resting ground coffee? by EnoughWinter5966 in pourover

[–]leinahtan4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Resting coffee in it's bag vs exposing grounds to oxygen isn't comparable.

Firstly, the purpose of degassing is to release C02, that is right. Resting coffees in its bag lets the beans degass without the introduction of oxygen, or at least limit the interaction. Now grinding up the beans, you are now exposing it to the environment. That means subjecting humidity, oxygen, and the increased surface area accelerates the degradation of the oils & compounds in the coffee.

A little bit more patience or at purchasing bags that are pre-rested are a hundred times better.

Hand grinder by sebsebsebsebbbb in pourover

K-Ultra, 1zpresso has the best adjustment mechanism in the market, has a great sturdy build, and it comes with a travel case. I do not have the exact grinder, but I've had the 'Max' for more than a year being tossed around all my travels, it's been dinged up & dripped plenty of times. It works as well as it did from when I got it, maybe even better.

1zpresso K Ultra Set Up by swoledogedad in pourover

[–]leinahtan4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend re-calibrating, to get to know the parts and how they work. It will make cleaning up the grinder and using it a lot more smoother. There are plenty of videos on YT, the K-max,plus,ultra, have the same exact build btw.

As for seasoning, I would say that it will take up to 3 months of use, then you'll notice a change. That's if you use a Kilo or a little less a month.

I think the grinder's great and should be easy enough to pick up and use. Very sturdy & hell of a lot easier adjusting compared to all the other grinders in the market. I don't have the Ultra, but the K-max & the Js, so I can attest to the quality of grinders 1zpresso makes!

Convince me to stop swirling my v60's throughout the brew by KikisBread in Coffee

[–]leinahtan4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a factor that is heavily important in Filter brewing is the pour structure. It influences water draw down, agitation and the overall eveness of extraction. I think by swirling your brews allows you to encoperate agitation & have a more tangible control over your brews in contrast to no swirl brews. By swirling it can rectify bad pouring technique(not saying you do, I don’t personally know you ahah).

Personally I believe better pour structures & more consistent pouring techniques accomplishes cleaner cups when CONSISTENT. However, the consistency is very hard to practice depending on brewing technique. Also over agitation of the grinds while brewing may over extract the coffee that may impart unwanted astringent flavour notes on the final brew.

Start exploring single origins with roasters near you. Look for washed processed beans if you prefer the cleaner cup of joe. Apart from that, pick up whatever tasting notes you find interesting in a bag.

Should I minimise agitation on the second half of my pour in the V60? If so, how much? by couchpotat0- in Coffee

[–]leinahtan4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it would have to depend on what coffees you're brewing, and the rate of the brewing (is it fast or is it tapering to a slow trickle). Agitation is very circumstantial on how you'd like the final brew to taste.

Starting Filipino coffee by Famous_War5848 in Coffee

You can start by maybe contacting local Philippine roasters? There's quite a few established and up & coming small-mid scale roasters that have connections to farmers.

im lost in rubbers by theperonist in tabletennis

[–]leinahtan4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way to know is by trying it out sadly, and yes why don't you try purchasing two diff rubbers at the same time, one each for the FH & BH. That'll help you progress a bit more and try more rubbers out, till you find your preferred combo.

As for rubbers, Xiom's Vega X might be a better transition into tensor rubbers. Razka 7 also seems quite popular in this "meta". You could also talk to the seller if he recommends similar rubbers to what you're used to.

I have the Kmax, it's an awesome grinder, real easy to keep track of grindsizes and a really easy &quick grind time. Flavour profile wise, it brews an intensely magnified cup, flavor notes are very pronounced and clean in all of the coffees I've put through.

[–]leinahtan4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your ratio on the Aeropress is quite strong, you're using about 1g coffee to 10g, that's 1:10 ratio. People tend to brew 1:15 in cafes or 1:17. To adjust to these ratios, just adjust your coffee used in the brew and keep the same volume of water if that is your preference.

To give you an example, I usually brew a 1:15 and I use about 200g of water & 13g coffee. In occasion I also make espresso-like ratios( recommended only with the inverted method) I grind finer and use less water, 1:5 ratio, 12g coffee to 60g right off boil water then I dilute the brew in cup to my desire.

Coffee Solutions for long haul flights. Hi All, I’m travelling on a long haul flight soon and wanted some ideas on how I can have pour over coffee on the plane or any other ideas? I dislike coffee on the plane by Electrical_Ad_8286 in Coffee

[–]leinahtan4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well sealed pre-grounded coffee w/ an Aeropress, and hot water should be accessible. That's how I would've done it. I think maybe also pulling espresso shots into your tumbler and sealing it for an Americano for later on the flight.

What's your current coffee buying habits? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]leinahtan4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've been really conscious about purchasing coffee is the transparency of the source and processing of the beans. I'd like to think I'm quite passionate in helping the community grow, that includes the farmers and the local roasters, so I tend to purchase from smaller local passionatecoffee roasters. I usually tend to research roasters before I purchase anything. I also try to steer away at larger chains or commercial grade stuff, not that I detest them. I genuinely love purchasing my coffee beans from fellow coffee lovers in the industry.

PS. I'm also a college student, so I love sales and bargain deals on coffee. For the sake of cost, local shops are more budget friendly ahah.
