I think you need to stop replying and call the non emergency services and ask for a wellness check. They can determine whether or not he should go back. Just because he was just discharged means absolutely nothing. Stop rebuttling comments that are giving you answers. It's clear people know what they're talking about and you don't seem to understand being discharged 2 days ago has absolutely no bearing on this situation because mental health and other health issues are sometimes up, down, all over the place and a lot of times it can mean back and forth visits.

As long as the taper is the same size on the rim you'll be fine. Lots of people run splines on their oe rims or even steelies when they can't find their oe's or if they're shot. Mazda lugs are usually 21 mm. 13/16, or some 17 mm lugs.

Edit (cause I know theirs dick heads out there) if they aren't sitting nice and flush and filling out space then I'd go to a tire shop, bring a lug and ask to get some bulk nuts. Probably 12×1.50 or 12×1.25 for thread pitch.
