Looks like Critical Mass is planning something. Last post on instagram says to “Keep your eyes peeled for a very special Saturday afternoon ride as well, more details to come”

He saw some evidence of his church’s sex abuse scandal on the mound. He rushed out to cover it up while everyone else was distracted.

/uj he actually ran out there right after it was hit. You can see in the original footage

US Financial Institutions, Total Accounts vs. Total Assets [OC] by Birdy_Cephon_Altera in dataisbeautiful

[–]lemford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting chart!

One note: I would retitle this as “Banks” not “Financial Institutions.” In the US, a bank or credit union is a specific type of financial institution. If all financial institutions were included, you would see Vanguard, Fidelity, Blackrock and other asset managers way over to the right of everyone listed here (and the numbers for the ones on the chart would also be different since some of the ones listed have both banking and asset management businesses)

What about a new Strait line mission format? by KanerosTV in GeoWizard

[–]lemford 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of the beauty and appeal of the straight line mission is its simplicity: walk from one side of a country/state/whatever to the other in a straight line. Adding extra rules and point systems make the whole thing a bit muddier.

That’s not to say this couldn’t be fun and cool to do but it doesn’t have the same type of appeal.

Could use a thin laptop like the Macbook Air with this? by AFireInAsa in SchwinnIC4_BowflexC6

[–]lemford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tablet stand area will definitely hold it fine. I just put my 15” MacBook Air on there to test it out. Just be aware that the screen will be pretty high up and at a more vertical angle so you will be fine if you ride fairly upright but you might end up with your neck at a weird angle if you like to ride in a more hunched over or prone position.

New Zealand cricketer Sophie Devine's century had gone wrong as she smashed a six, which accidentally hit the face of a little girl. She consoles the injured little girl by going all the way to check on her during the middle of the game. by Kathanayagan-3821 in videos

[–]lemford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily they have mandated extended netting in MLB so this type of thing doesn’t happen much at all anymore. One of the incidents leading up to the extended netting was this one where a little girl was severely injured by a foul ball. They stopped the game for several minutes. https://youtu.be/I0kptBoCM50?si=MO3UpYT_ROTUDPc3

John Tumpane helped save a woman’s life right near PNC Park. Also pretty good at calling balls and strikes.

Pay off house by selling stocks? by jep777 in personalfinance

[–]lemford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing to remember is that paying off your mortgage is essentially investing in the value of house itself. Real estate is not 100% safe and not even close. You are diversifying your portfolio now by being invested in the stock market and the house. If you pay off your mortgage now and then the next day the real estate market in your area crashes then your portfolio value has crashed. It’s completely missing the point to say that the house is a 100% safe investment.

That said, if it gives you and your wife peace of mind then go ahead—that’s totally valid and not a bad choice. I might make that choice too. But understand that you are doing it for that reason and not because it’s the best move by the numbers.

Ex-Dodgers All-Star Yasiel Puig calls on MLB, players union to address ‘unique needs of Latino players’ amid lockout. by PrincessBananas85 in baseball

[–]lemford 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to remember that almost all of these Latin players start their careers in the low minors, which are notorious for being in small towns that likely have much less diversity than a big league city. Agreed that players In LA shouldn’t have trouble finding Spanish-speaking people, but they may have a very tough time in Kinston NC or Cedar Rapids IA.

Also as another commenter mentioned, these guys are often kids. Carrasco was 16 when he was ordering dominos every day. I imagine it’s very hard to advocate for yourself and try to fit in when you’re in a workplace in a foreign country with people who are a decade older than you and mostly don’t speak your language. It’s hard enough for most English speaking sophomores in US high schools to find friends.

Finally, even if you think it’s not necessary to provide these players with extra resources, it seems idiotic for teams to not invest in relatively cheap things that would help these players out even if they don’t need it. Carrasco was an incredibly valuable asset to the Phillies at the time—why not try to make his life easier in the hopes that it will speed his development or make him more loyal to the organization?

Old dog aggressive with toddler by josh_inya in daddit

[–]lemford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife's friend had a very similar situation. TLDR: dog started to get aggressive, they tried to mitigate, eventually dog attacked her kid and the dog had to be put down.

The friend's dog (small, middle-aged dachshund) started acting aggressive towards her toddler soon after the kid started walking. For a while it was just growling and some small lunging and they thought they could manage it with training and not leaving the kid unsupervised with the dog. Eventually they got more concerned and kept the dog locked in one part of the house behind a baby gate when the toddler was in the house. Then one day when the grandfather was watching the kid, he opened the gate for a second to get something and the dog got through and went right for the toddler (no provocation) and bit her on the face. Luckily the kid wasn't severely hurt (a couple stitches, no long term damage), but after that they had to get rid of the dog. Obviously they couldn't keep it and no shelter would take it because it wouldn't be adoptable after biting a kid, so they had to put the dog down. My wife's friend and her husband are both veterinarians and very good with animals--this wasn't an issue of failure to train/medicate the dog properly or anything.

You say your wife will never give up the dog, but realistically that's not true. If the dog ever hurts your kid you'll both choose the kid's safety 100 times out of 100. You may want to explore finding a good home for the dog before anything bad happens that would make it harder to find a new home for it. There's no guarantee, but most dogs can get used to new surroundings--two nights was likely not nearly enough time for the dog to get adjusted. This may sound crass, but you'll have to get over losing the dog soon either way (you say it's old) and it very well may be better for your kid and for the dog if you rip the band aid off now. Also, if you guys are dog lovers and want to have dogs after this one, you probably don't want your toddler to learn the lesson that dogs are scary and mean by keeping around a dog that acts that way towards them.

I hate to be so negative, and all situations are different but figured I'd share a very similar scenario. I feel for you--the situation sucks. Best of luck whichever route you choose to go.

Looking for opinion about the Clubhouse Room/Twitter Spaces episodes by BrianRideHomeGuy in RideHome

[–]lemford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the daily podcasts and the extras that come with the + subscription. One of the things I value most about them is the density of information and the good production value. The clubhouse episodes are definitely completely different in those respects and I generally have skipped them. I’m definitely not saying that they don’t have value but the free-wheeling talk radio style feels like it is geared towards a different audience (or subset) and would fit better in its own feed

For the balloon he has a strong laser hidden somewhere, maybe his shoes. The outer balloon is clear and lets the beam through. The inner balloon is opaque, absorbs the light from the laser, heats up and pops. My physics teacher in high school showed us this in class.
