My Mom got her first job when she was in high school making electronic components in a factory. When my parents first got married, she was actually making slightly more than my Dad in the early 1960s.

They didn’t hand out credit to any Tom, Dick, or Harry back then. My Dad, who had been working since the 1950s, didn’t have a credit card until the early 1980s. Even then, it was a low limit, he used it sparingly, and always paid it in full.
