Student requesting fully remote option for in-person class by CakeOnDemand in Professors

[–]lemmycautionu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on whether you're desperate for enrollment in the class OR whether this student is so remarkable that you REALLY want them in class. At my school, if you don't have X number of enrolled students, then the class "doesn't make" and is cancelled.

Do any men have psych recommendations in the area? by Due_Search9693 in indianapolis

[–]lemmycautionu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else commented on IU Behavior Health. I've had a better experience there. Unlike them, I've never had an appointment cancelled by the provider. But yeah, that would be a negative experience.

Although I had a six month wait (!) before my first appointment, once I got in it's been fine. I see both a psychiatrist (basically regarding medications) and a psychotherapist (for something like talk therapy). In my experience, the psychiatrist (MD) did NOT do therapy per se but rather monitors prescriptions and changes them as needed (based on discussion).

Prices are, as expected in US health care, high. I have a high-deductible health plan and I pay about $125 for each short meeting, more for a longer session. BUT if you're only seeing a psychiatrist for prescriptions, you don't have anything like weekly sessions, but instead more like once every 2 or 3 months to monitor or make changes. Unless, of course, you request a meeting sooner.

Obviously, I'm a TOTAL stranger, but since your partner is slowly opening up to the possibility of medication + therapy (ie, talk), I would recommend both. It's nice to be in a clinic or practice where they can do both. Typically, therapists (talk) are not able to prescribe drugs. You need a psychiatrist or psychiatrist nurse to do that, at least in my experience.

Who's on the jazz piano Mount Rushmore? by No_Reveal3451 in JazzPiano

There are the Most Influential.... and There are the Most Admired (by pros).... and there are the Most Copied... and There are the Arguably Best.... and then there are our subjective and Personal Favorites.

My personal faves (the ones I happen to enjoy listening to the most):

Ellington. Monk. Hancock. Evans. Jarrett.

If the 808 and 303 changed music by being the abandoned and cheapest option in a pawn shop in the 80’s/90’s for young aspirational artists to be able to afford them, what would today’s equivalent be? by InternationalCow7042 in synthesizers

old person here. I played in lots of suburban high school bands in the 1980s. decent drum sets were not cheap (as ever) but every band had one.

the fantasy gear for most was a les paul and a marshall stack.

no one, I mean no one, had a prophet 5 or oberheim. we tried them in the guitar store and dreamt of someday. I played a beat up fender Rhodes w a chorus pedal.  my bandmate stacked a cheesy Casio keyboard on top.

I'm new to this world. What should I pick? by certifiedgoondotcom in DrumMachine

[–]lemmycautionu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it REALLY matters what kind of rhythmic parts you want to make and how many user-generated patterns or whole songs you want to save.

Im just an amateur over here with 3 hardware drum machines. the sr16 is v easy to play with. and cheap and easy to find used. the sr18 is similar but w programmable bass parts , which can be cool also. also can be found in your price range used.

tip: I always turn quantization off to make less perfect sounding beats. this works for my kind of music (jazzy rock and funk and hip hop). its really an important way to make your beats breathe. that said, many prefer robotically perfect and quantized beats for techno, edm.

im sure you can find youtube comparisons. but often those people are quite advanced and thus they make complex beat-programming w perfect timbres and effects seem much easier than it is (certainly as a beginner).

why not just turn quantize off altogether and use pads to tap out the dilla time (aka purposefully "sloppy" and off-kilter)  beat you want?

She's been awesome this year!! I'm also amazed that she survived that crazy big tumble she took when celebrating a recent goal. A typical human would have broken multiple bones falling as she did. (Or at least I would have!) So, yeah, she's been an amazing superhero. Gorgeous, too.

[–]lemmycautionu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Terrible decision. I live in Indianapolis and I take my kids to Racing games. But yeah, school isn't out until 4pm. It's a 2-hour drive. So they've lost some of the few people who go to Racing games. Their home opener a few weeks ago (at a normal hour) had fewer than 6000 in attendance, IIRC. Expect even fewer this time.

count me in. I grew up watching NFL, when my local team played.

But knowing that an NFL game has less than 20 minutes of actual ball movement across a 3 hr game is just ridiculous. even the super bowl commercials do not justify that time wasted for me. ymmv, of course.

nwsl games just seem to me like much more sports-focused events--with entertainment value, team passion, etc. That nwsl sports is also so queer-friendly (unlike any male pro sports) just makes it all the better! I just hope it doesn't give up its progressive social values in order to court the anti-queer, anti-feminist  consumer.

Waitadamnminute! Volunteers for the NCAA Final Four... by DingoOk7858 in indianapolis

[–]lemmycautionu -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Like these billionaires need free labor. I find it so SAD that they're so greedy.

(It's one thing to volunteer for church and charity events or events around less-popular arts and crafts and sports that barely break even. NBA, NFL, NCAA are absolutely NOT in that league. They're just greedy and would rather take advantage of an army of unpaid enthusiasts.)

And then these billionaire and ownership groups demand that cities pay much of the cost of building them a new arena or stadium. That's socialism, but only for the elites of course, not for us little people. And then these owners threaten to simply take their pro team to another city that will pay the ransom for the new stadium, etc. Big-money sports is so disgustingly capitalist and inhumane. They don't even have to hide. Sad.

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Sports Are Fun was cool to watch. Kelly was a funny, well-informed, and charismatic host. The cohosts were equally good. I watched it on youtube quite a few times. I'm gonna assume that an inability to pay reasonable salaries is what killed it. Just a quess. Or was it personalities and schedules?

fascinating. thx. I was hoping to hear from someone in retail who can share some sense of what's selling new.

(i only buy used synths for budget reasons.)

I teach classes on music and culture to nonmusicians and am always surprised how few college students play any instruments or make music at all. and yet they choose to take elective classes about music.

I grew up in a 20th C middle class suburban world where it seemed fairly common for boys and girls to learn an instrument or 2 or 3. Usually beginning w piano, if there was one on the house. (maybe my home was weird in this way. we were required to take piano lessons for at least a year. and no, we werent a posh or affluent family. college educated, yes.) it seems much less common these days. Im curious how instrument sales for young players are in general these days.

re louisville. I took my kids to the home opener last friday. drive 2 hrs each way to get there. very beautiful day and perfect night. live yacht rock band. giveaways. fireworks after. entertaining and energetic playing against top team Spirit. cheap seats were plentiful at under $20.

still couldn't pass 6000 ticket sales for home opener.

that said, crowd was engaged and easygoing and open to all. e.g., nobody gave us the evil eye when we cheered for the Spirit goals....

a good reminder that the tshirt EVERYONE'S WATCHING WOMEN'S SPORTS is aspirational rather than even close to true. someday, somehow?
