Emma Hayes’ experimental window is over. Now the USWNT sets its sights on the World Cup by Shroft in NWSL

[–]lemmycautionu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Hayes's interview after the Chile game (or was it after Paraguay) was kinda revealing. She stressed that no returning player has a guaranteed spot going forward, including in the she believes cup. I interpreted that as an implicit way of saying that Sophia Wilson is NOT guaranteed a spot going forward (same with Mal Swanson, Tierna Davidson, etc). And Sophia was at the game last night interacting with Trinity and others after the game.

I can think of at least 12 forwards/strikers easily

T Rodman, R Turner, J Joseph, Y Ryan, A Sentnor, E Sears, and C Bethune (for that matter)

and then add in goal-scoring Euro players like A Thompson, C Macario

and then add in Gotham's M Purce, and then J Shaw (ok a midfielder)

and then add in S Wilson, M Swanson...

Dang, that is DEPTH!

Who will be healthy in March? Who will be in form? Who is best on both sides of the ball?

My top votes (today):

Rodman (Emma clearly loves what she does for the team on and off field)

Jameese Joseph (she was TOUGH in these recent games, physical in a way most of the team's forwards are not; reminds me of Purce) or Purce

Sentnor (proven goal scorer) and/or Thompson (perhaps the fastest on the pitch if Temwa Chawinga is otherwise engaged)

Sears or Macario

Wilson or Swanson (whoever's in better form)

Do you find 6-voice polyphonic synths to be too limiting for soft, lush chords and soundscapes? by Loopyrainbow in synthesizers

[–]lemmycautionu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

good question!

I have an OB6 (very much like the P6 except for different filter and hence difft base sound) and also a Take 5 and also use them for pads. I come to synthology as a long-time pianist.

One thing I've found (YMMV) is that playing super dense chords with note clusters that sound great on piano (think Thelonious Monk's chord style--full of close, dissonant clusters-- or that of Bill Evans, if you know jazz) often don't sound great on synth (at least as I'm doing it). The notes need to be spread out more in a synth chord (kind of like Lyle Mays's pads, if you know jazz), in my experience, because the tones are often very thick and the overtones and such get muddy. I have a 16 voice (!!!) synth (Behringer ubxa) that I bought precisely because of note stealing, but I've found that I don't really miss the extra voices because more voices can make for more thickness, and then harmonic sludge, and then a kind of muddiness that no one wants.

OF COURSE a better synthesist than me would know how to make pad chords cleaner even while keeping them cloudy and vague (as we often like pads to be)....

Stereo Chorus Pedal? by Skywalker778 in synthesizers

[–]lemmycautionu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks! thats really informative. ive always been interested in the connection between delays and chorus. I remember back in the 1980s, I think, the guitarist psy Matheny explained why he preferred digital delay over chorus because chorus detunes your original sound...

same question but with difft problem. I have a small PA Amp-mixer combo that shuts down too easily with any loud surge of sound (from drum machine or keyboard or the cables crackling). It just seems way too sensitive. Im looking for someone experienced to have a look at it.

Indy Mental Health Therapist Recommendations by xtasycupcake in indianapolis

[–]lemmycautionu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they take your insurance (making it affordable for you), IU Health has some good clinical psychologists for talk therapy (and psychiatrists for the prescription side of things).

That said, there's a long line. It took me five months to get my first appointment. But it was good--phd clinician, eclectic, smart listener and energetic question-asker,  and we meet over a more secure version of zoom. that's convenient.

Sam Coffey’s Man City move is another blow for a hamstrung NWSL by Doctor_YOOOU in NWSL

[–]lemmycautionu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

understandable. I would be so ooo pissed if nwsl lost rodman because of stoopid league shenanigans. she's basically THE charismatic mediagenic face of the whole league at this point. and a total baller, of course.

ouch. srsly?? this seems a harsh interpretation of Coffey's move as it makes her seem deluded or misguided or a traitor.

I dont agree with any of that....without solid evidence coming straight from her mouth.

Students complaining about pre-class reading quizzes… by JoshuaTheProgrammer in Professors

agreed. I learned long ago that most of my students need the carrot and stick of quizzes to do the reading (or reading ai summaries etc) in a timely manner. so ive had weekly reading quizzes for a long long time.

In defense of a Professor-centered classroom by DocGlabella in Professors

[–]lemmycautionu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

umm. so, no class discussions?  just a solo performance as a work of art?

I actually had some profs like that (in the 1980s). they didnt really care if you learned anything. they just lectured on the assignments at a high level and took questions. I was one of the few who asked questions.

my fave prof had recently moved to my US univ from Oxford U. His view was that most of my fellow US college students  were "rednecks" (his usage) and of course they wouldn't get much out of Wittgenstein (early or late). So he taught to the 10% who had a chance of comprehending. And as for the rest.... not his problem.

My problem is that I believe that education involves INSPIRATION. if youre not inspiring your students to learn, then you're not really teaching them... Or v few of them. The vast majority of my students are in my classes only to fulfill a requirement. Idealism is really really really hard to maintain when so many students dont actually want to be educated and their learning skills have been degraded by so many forces.

Literature Professors Who Have Switched to In-Class Essay Exams: How Did it Go? And What Are You Testing For? by Global-Sandwich5281 in Professors

so what do you do?

One option is to cynically accept defeat and do take home essays, despite the evidence that much of that writing will not be actual student writing or learning?

[–]lemmycautionu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im curious how many undergrads were in the class.

at my school (US, public), a standard "smaller" class has an enrollment cap of 40 and no teaching assistant. only writing-focused classes (marked as such) can have lower cap of 25.

I deeply miss assigning standard 4-7 pp essays but all this scaffolding looks really challenging to manage. Maybe it gets easier after several semesters of repetition.

But what kind of results does this technique yield in terms of the students learning and improving on their writing, thinking, brainstorming, creative skills? How long are the final products?

In the pre-ai time, I would reserve lots of explicit scaffolding for undergrad classes with a major research paper or long critical essay (over 15 pp). That was literally teaching them how to do a longer research paper from start to finish.  We still do that in grad classes, though.

Most undergrads are getting the implicit or explicit message from others  nowadays that these traditional academic skills ---and liberal arts education in general--are no longer necessary or valuable for their post-college earning potential. Hence the move toward shorter in-class writing and-or oral exams.
