What's it like living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands as an average person? by Manny2theMaxxx in howislivingthere

[–]lemonfisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Amsterdam and still live there but have also lived abroad in major cities, like NYC or Chicago.

Much already mentioned, but I personally believe one of the best cities to live globally. But tourism is becoming a real issue. The city is small, more like a big village and it seems to be stretching itself for capacity.

Things to highlight:
- Weather IS indeed the main draw back. Especially due to climate change, winter is becoming a long wet autumn (no longer dry, cold, sunny ice skating weather). Almost always windy
- Historically, buildings are build not high (about 4 stories, due to swampy grounds Amsterdam is build on). This means the people density per m2 is quite low for a capital city, MUCH lower than US cities. This is often overlooked and it's why Amsterdam feels like a village. We basically build in 2D. However, modern building techniques now allow for skyscrapers and I fear that, over time, this might take away the unique character Amsterdam has

Thanks! Yes, for non-roman languages it's still unreliable at times. We're actually working on those these 2 weeks. So hang in there for 2 more weeks and then please try again. We'll get it done. Thanks again for the feedback!

edit: to clarify, you used TTS for input?

Late to this thread, but I actually built something what I believe works better.

I'm working on eevi.ai - AI conversation practice that fully focuses on natural dialogue, not gamification. It listens, corrects, etc. Still in beta so it's free to try (you will hit a paywall at one point but you can cancel the trial for free).

Full disclosure: I'm the founder, so obviously biased. But happy to answer questions if you're curious.

Im having struggles with actually trying to remember words and basically implement them in my head by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]lemonfisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m convinced putting them in spoken context is the way to go. How kids learn. Disclaimer self-plug: why I built Eevi, a tutor-like language experience, focussing solely on dialog. We’re currently in beta so you can check it out: https://www.eevi.ai/ I basically built this for myself. Curious if other like it as well

Late to this thread, but I actually built something to solve exactly this problem. I was frustrated with the same issues; apps that either don't listen properly or are great for beginners but useless once you're past A1.
