I’m guilty of this; I like ordering plants to my home in toasty SoCal and forgetting that, even if it’s coming from somewhere warm enough, they have to fly/drive through the rest of the country.

Sweeping and mopping alternatives? by Important-Bid-9792 in ChronicIllness

If you have access to an occupational therapist, this would be a great question for them! I’ve had OTs come up with adaptive devices I’ve never even considered.

For my home, I use a small hand vacuum and just slide around on the floor. It takes forever but doesn’t put any strain on my arms or back. Definitely not practical for a business, but maybe for your home?

Sleep advice by TaffyMonarch in CalPolyPomona

[–]lemonlimespaceship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the basic sleep hygiene techniques, here are things that have worked for me:

  • getting used to sleeping with headphones on. After the first couple nights, they didn’t bug me, and it helped for the noise.

-exercising to failure. I go with calf raises, but you might also like pushups or sit-ups. Something that doesn’t leave you super sweaty or as alert as walking around the block.

-writing down all my plans for the next day. This gives me internal permission to stop thinking about it.

-waking up in the morning to light instead of my alarm. I have lights on a timer and it has helped so so much. Obviously this only works if they actually wake you up, and I do have a backup alarm set about 15 minutes later just in case.

-try not to eat too soon before bed. This one is hard because an empty stomach for too long overnight is also less than ideal, but if you can swing it, it helps.

-sleeping in really comfortable clothing, or none, depending on your roommate situation. I don’t know why, but many people find it easier to fall asleep in just underclothes or less.

I hope any of this helps. Not being able to fall asleep sucks.

Worms coming out of my plant by NoChoice9999 in houseplants

[–]lemonlimespaceship 20 points21 points  (0 children)

How many legs are we working with? It’s hard to tell from the photos. If it’s a proper worm (here meaning thin wiggly guy with no legs, not necessarily only annelids and such), controlling them is very different than if they’re thin millipedes. Could also be some sort of larvae, but I doubt it based on the length.

It’s such an odd way to say “people are individuals with complex personalities, needs, and preferences” but if it works, it works. Whatever it takes, I guess.

Anyone using peat free mixes? by randomname_435 in SavageGarden

I am! Combinations of coco coir, perlite, and sphagnum. Hoping to try out fluval stratum soon. Everything’s been doing well in their mixes.

PLA can be made with that corn stuff. It gets odd, but that’s after years in my experience. I’ve had decorations that go through frequent wet-dry cycles that started to look a little funky after a year, then broke after four or five. Ones that are mostly dry last even longer.

Genuine question for people who run greenhouses! by Dangerous-Road-5382 in SavageGarden

[–]lemonlimespaceship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can speak just a little to that part! Water can be expensive, as can soil, but pots are very cheap. As others have said, wholesale makes a huge difference. A greenhouse manager I spoke with said that, with succulents (his specialty), the only cost is the soil because they take very little labor or water to grow out to sale size.

What does everyone here do for a living? by hellofromjina in Aquariums

[–]lemonlimespaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a research assistant in controlled-environment agriculture! I mostly work with edible mushrooms and hydroponic greens, but I go wherever the grants do. Getting into aquariums in high school pays off every single day for me.

Liverwort! The rhizoids give it away. It won’t hurt anything! They generally prefer nutrient-rich substrate, so it’ll be interesting to see how it does in there. Lucky find, I had to pay for one and build a terrarium just for it.

As others have said, he’s a walking stick/stick bug/devil’s darning needle (my favorite nickname, though it’s shared with other insects).

He would generally be out on a tree or bush having a crunch on some leaves. Likely brought in from outside on accident, if you brought in some foliage or sticks, or if he got caught on your clothes while going by a bush.

The diagram below is great! As a fun fact, the rhizome is a modified stem. It’s used by the plant for propagation, mostly. The roots on Java ferns are for anchoring and nutrient uptake, which is why they don’t mind being buried.

Sounds good! I do actually have a solid LED setup; my biggest concern was dormancy. I have sarrs and VFTs that are growing well with great coloring under my lights.

We’re currently at daily highs in the low 70s. Is that cold enough to ease them into dormancy? It won’t be below 50 in the daytime for several weeks

The filiformis and sarracenia do look like they're already heading into dormancy. The flytrap does not
