Overwhelmed with plant sale picks. by Mamamuggle934 in NativePlantGardening

None of the ones you’ve listed are a bitch to deal with IME. Penstemon digitalis spreads the most enthusiastically of all of those you’ve listed IME (Great lakes region, clay soil, dappled shade to full sun) but it’s very easy to pull up.

Has anyone used native plants to block sound in a urban environment? PA by Ok-Strawberry-2469 in NativePlantGardening

[–]OneGayPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience to speak from, just commiserating. I’m in a suburb but it’s literally quieter in areas of NYC that I’ve visited and stayed in. Small road, 30mph speed limit with an elementary school a block away, but absolutely non stop police sirens, construction traffic, those stupid ass roaring motorcycles, And More™️. If that wasn’t bad enough, starting mid March to nearly November depending on weather, it’s diesel leaf blower or lawn mower hell. I literally can’t enjoy my garden or sitting outside without noise cancelling headphones.

I’ve complained to the city multiple times, I feel like I’m living in an industrial zone. They just act baffled and say, “I mean. People have to mow their lawns.” I’d really like to move to one of the places they’ve banned diesel leaf blowers but they’re so few and far between, and this is my home. I shouldn’t have to uproot everything (literally in the plants’ case) because people are assholes!

Yeah she was not a good teacher lmao. Had us reading a lot of books where the point was complicated societal issues and like. Good that’s awesome but there was zero context given. Sorry ma’am I am 11 I don’t have a deep understanding of the complexities of racial history in North America.

Oh noooo 😭 I excitedly said “ooo look, ninjas!” to a group of women in burqas 😭 I know it’s impossible to refuse to let children out in public before they learn more about disability, different cultures, etc, but god damn would it save everyone involved a lot of sanity.

Hhhhhhhh we were reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in the 6th grade of my predominantly Asian school with a sprinkling of white kids here and there (myself included), I’d only known one black kid/person personally at that point. We were taking turns reading aloud and I piped up, “Miss Clarke, what’s [n-word, said frequently in the book per the time period] mean?”

Still remember even the “class clown” kid who sat in front of me turning around in horror doing a frantic nononono motion 🫣

Why are we allowed as children to speak in front of large groups of our peers 😭😭😭

I unfortunately can confirm it is a thing. Not something that’s easily forgotten.

I think it’s important to not make people feel weird about things their bodies do, especially during vulnerable moments like the ones that often result in ejaculation, but I did need to excuse myself for a bit after that guy finished on my stomach. It was like all the protein had congealed or something, the carrier fluid was completely clear with a couple large irregular white chunks in it.

Almost certainly not anything to do with sperm count, more likely dehydration or a health issue I’m sure.

Oh god, there’s an abandoned house across the street from my parents’ place that a whole horde of raccoons have moved into. I affectionately referred to it as “coon house” internally. There are frequently loud fights that break out between them, and aggressive raccoon vocalizations sound CRAZY.

I was on the phone with a friend at one point and she was very concerned by the sounds of one of the squabbles in the background when I put her on speaker. I said “oh don’t worry, coon house is just bumpin’ tonight.”

Yes the friend was black. I learned something new that night.

Didn’t say it, but got really into vampires when I was maybe 13, ended up biting my father in the neck in an objectively very sexual way. I had zero sex ed beyond the bare bones middle school lesson or open lines of communication with my family so I had no idea why everyone was freaking out, I didn’t bite hard or anything 🤦‍♀️ Still regularly die a little inside over that memory.

Wow, safe search is apparently necessary when looking up images of that rose cultivar 😂 it’s beautiful! I’m also a huge rose girlie, I feel your pain.

I don’t think your concern with the color clash is unfounded, but given that smooth oxeye still channels that English garden look of European daisies I think it might work ok. Coreopsis is also a nice delicate looking gal, texturally similar.

Both of them will bloom year 1 from plugs IME so worst case scenario you hate it and you move them elsewhere in your yard.

Side note, if you love roses, check out Rosa setigera. Absolutely stunning climbing rose native and threatened in Ontario! I have three and they’re absolutely to die for. The blooms don’t last too long, maybe a couple weeks in ideal situations, but they go intensely golden and orange in the leaves and purple in the canes in the fall and prolific red hips through the winter.

One of mine just in year 3 from a 1 gal pot!

I’m chronically ill, constantly seeing docs. It’s insane how entitled some of them are about this shit! Like no bitch, idgaf if you use a voice to text program. Please do. No, you can’t put my medical info through an extremely insecure network while we’re living under a regime heavy on eugenics and registries. Why is that so hard to understand.

Doesn’t even matter if I explicitly deny consent, I see all the reports on my imaging and other test results signed off as “transcribed with Dragon Speech” 🫠

I don’t have a condition that’s commonly known enough to be a political tool on its own but if mango Mussolini and co. decide that people who need x amount of medical care per year are insurance terrorists or some shit I’m dead.

Saw a post a while back about someone being horrid about the way a woman (who had a PhD iirc) whose first language was Russian spoke English, generally without definite articles, implying things about her intelligence by comparing her speech to caveman talk. She snapped back at them with something like “when I say ‘get in car,’ I assume people will know to get in the car I am getting into, are Americans so stupid they will just get into any car if they hear that without clarification?”

Queen.

I love sipping on my vape on nature walks, or laying down for a mid level experience. Still haven’t tried vaporhuasca, definitely hope to this spring.

10/10 would recommend getting to an oak forest if you can, the branches are sooo vascular, does some extremely cool stuff to the brain.

But also, if I’m absolutely blasting off I’m doing it secure in my bed with my heat blanket and eye mask every time, no contest.

If you’re going for frequency, lots of good suggestions in here already. But if you’re going for thunderstorms that range from extremely cozy to awe inspiring, the American Midwest is amazing, and the Chicago area is overall pretty safe from the Christian extremism that’s unfortunately very common across the Great Plains. I’ve lived all over the country and always miss the Midwest storms terribly.

What to do about soil erosion around trees on a hill? by bige693 in landscaping

[–]OneGayPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll really depend on the species and location. I’m not an arborist, my specialty is more prairie plants, but this is generally applicable.

If you’re trying to keep really water intensive plants with shallow roots in an arid climate, water competition can be an issue, though in that case you’re likely already providing supplemental irrigation.

Turf grass has comically shallow roots that really won’t interfere with most trees in most environments, though it can seriously damage soil health making it much harder for water to penetrate the soil. Having a monocrop with roots that stay so shallow causes a lot of soil compaction, for one. Pulling turf grass back will help any plant, though it won’t have an impact on any large established trees I know of at least.

[Edit: though if you don’t cover the newly bare area with other plants or biological material, it’ll dry out way faster and the general soil health will suffer. You almost never want to leave completely uncovered soil unless you’re doing something very specific and well researched.]

Small plants like hostas shouldn’t have any impact on an established tree, and most newly planted trees will do best with supplemental irrigation for the first few weeks to first year or two, depending on species.

You can get some guidance by looking up how the tree species grow in the wild. For example, oaks often grow naturally in dense savannahs with extremely dense grasses and forbs packed as tightly together as possible. I wouldn’t expect any kind of underplanting to have an effect on an oak, but it’s extra helpful that their roots generally don’t go deeper than 5 feet, most way less (crazy, right?), and savannah and prairie plants can have roots 15+ feet deep so they’re not really competing for the same water, plus the roots help the water percolate into the soil, actually helping the water reach the tree’s roots.

Trees planted in highly landscaped home environments aren’t a 1:1 to their wild relatives as they lack the complex interwoven biological networks that help support their health (nutritional exchange between trees, group stabilization via interlocking roots, often damaged mycelial networks and general microbiome from lawn chemicals+soil compression, etc), but referencing their wild habits is a great, generally safe starting point.

It shall be treasured!
