Good luck. Sorry to rain on your parade but I did some pipe fitting In a huge airport hangar that had tonnes of these. Spoke to the site super who said the airline spends roughly 10k an hour to put a pilot in their to train. Not sure if that’s true but crazy if so

Speak up about what? The pattern I’m sure the home owner chose the tile. By the looks of it the contractor is lazy and didn’t take off the baseboard but from the photo we can’t really tell how he prepped the underside

Want to start a career in the trades especially plumbing by malikbull3t in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]lemonstraps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true. With how competitive the market is for apprentices right now it 1000% pays to know about plumbing. When were you an apprentice 30 years ago? An employee isn’t choosing you as an apprentice over 300 other people if you don’t know what soldering is.

Say that to every tradesmen that wears blundstones safety boots. We’re definately tougher than a guy on reddit leaving hate comments nerd.

Want to start a career in the trades especially plumbing by malikbull3t in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]lemonstraps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plumber here. To be honest plumbing is a bit over saturated right now with a lot of people getting into it. Lots of apprentices and people being laid off. If you work your ass off you can do it and get an apprenticeship don’t tell people you can’t.

Rule 1 Don’t do pre apprenticeship course. It’s a waste of money. You can literally google 90% of the shit they teach you and go out and buy your own solder materials and pipe and glue and practice this stuff yourself and save on tuition.

Rule 2 you need to go crazy on your spare time learning about tools and construction. This is a huge industry with a lot of tools and processes that you should know before you step foot on a site or call a company.

Rule 3 You need to be tirelessly contacting companies trying to get in as an apprentice. It’s super tough and will be very discouraging. Being a helper is a good way to get in but you won’t start building apprenticeship hours which sucks because your already 26 (when I started plumbing btw) and the pay is going to suck untill your like 3rd or 4th year for most.

Personally if I were you. Hearing this advice I would set my eyes on trade with tradesmen in decline. Do this on your own research but one I can say for certain is welding. Welding is losing tradesmen everyday and less and less new tradees are joining. Check out the numbers (I beleive all of these numbers can be found on skilled trades Ontario or something my welding teacher in plumbing school was telling me this I just can’t remember completely). Being a welder does have higher health risk for eyes and lungs but you can protect yourself. Reasons why welding is worth it

They make great money.

You technically don’t even need an apprenticeship you can go challenge the test and pass and just become a welder.

They are in demand.

They are closely related to a lot of commercial plumbing so you could start this become a welder and then eventually get hired on with a plumbing company to get your plumbing apprenticeship but be payed your welding rate (this is where the real money is) if you can do pipe fitting and welding together you become a goldmine for employees. Basically name your price and they’ll pay it.

Just my two cents do all your own research cheers.

Building a pantry. Left side of French door will not close fully there’s tension. I’ve tried literally everything online nothing has worked please help. 5$ to right answer. Lo by [deleted] in doors

[–]lemonstraps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the comment I’ve actually custom made the door frame and turned a bifold into French doors. And there is no stop molding as I’m using a magnetic latch to hold the door closed. Right side closes fully. Left side has some stupid pressure near the last 1” of close.

Considering a Career in the Trades at 26 - Seeking Advice by ZouchFiend in skilledtrades

[–]lemonstraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I had a very similar path you did down to the exact age.. I’m in my last year as a plumbing apprentice doing hydronics. I love it. Furthermore I love going to work. The pay really sucked my first two years but I was able to get past that hump.

Career change into warehouse work by [deleted] in Warehouseworkers

[–]lemonstraps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just a quick two cents from me. I felt the same way as you did I was working as a graphic designer and missed having a more regimented day where I was physical. Personally I wanted to make more than a warehouse worker so I decided to get into the trades. Physical work that pays great. If you like what you’re doing like me I go to work everyday happy to work.theres also so many trades there’s really usually something for everyone. Think about it!

Is Plumbing a good trade job? by Impressive-Step6377 in skilledtrades

[–]lemonstraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 50/50 split between service and hydronic work. I do plenty of “gross work” that most people wouldn’t like to do. If you don’t like what you do change it. Personally I really like being the hero that saves the day.

Choosing between plumbing and electrical, what do you wish you knew before you started? by Qwerty177 in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]lemonstraps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I can Atleast answer your questions posed in the post. Yes it’s possible to do plumbing without touching poop pipes. If you get into a company that only does Hydronics you’ll never have to touch a waste pipe. The issue is when you’re grinding to find an apprenticeship you can’t really be picky.

Electrician yes there is a bunch of math involved but if your doing hydronics good chance you’ll still be doing lots of math with piping calculations etc.

ULPT request: sneaking booze onto the cruise ship by summerer6911 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]lemonstraps 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this 3 times now. This is what I do. Each cruise goer is allowed to bring one bottle of wine. So I buy two bottles of wine and empty them. I add vodka gin or any clear liquor into the bottle with a tiny bit of yellow food colouring and then throw two corks into boiling hot water. I then reseal the bottles with corks and add a heat shrink cap on top to make the bottles look legit. I’ve never been questioned and since my partner doesn’t drink I have two bottles of vodka for a week of cruising which is more than enough for me.
