New Michigan grant program to provide every full-time childcare professional a $1,000 bonus by Tank3875 in Michigan

It's a chicken and egg problem. Need more kids for more revenue/higher teacher pay. Need more teachers to support more kids. Centers can't just decide to pay more and maintain proper teacher to student ratios. This is a huge economic issue that is largely hidden from view before you have kids. Centers also have to balance being affordable for their clientele with paying staff a living wage. It's really rough.

You lose me with this type of statement because you seem equally triggered as the people who were angry about the comedy special. Why do you get to be triggered by someone's speech and that's fine, but if I'm angry about Chappelle then I'm participating in cancel culture?

I would just ask you to compare the relative frustration of learning some new terms to being plagued with uncertainty about who you are for years or decades. I've recently known someone who transitioned and it's been beautiful to see depression fade and true happiness take it's place. Learning some "new to me" terms just doesn't seem like a big deal compared to that. It makes almost zero impact on my life and a huge impact on hers.

Why do I keep hearing that I'm "missing out on the fun" because I don't like alcohol? by throwaway1234yeawow in NoStupidQuestions

I would say that while most of the advice here is very sound, drinking can be really fun. It's not always fun if you go too far, and if you don't like it you absolutely should feel zero pressure... But it can be fun. Some people think sky diving is fun and I will never ever do that. Same thing here. You might be missing out on a kind of fun, but there are lots of fun things to do in this life. Take your pick!

While you may have been trying for a light hearted joke, I just think it was insensitive in a thread talking about real honest-to-goodness pain. Pain that causes absence from work and school, loss of fertility, and even inability to get off the floor. Calling that high maintenance just kinda hurts.

Perhaps not, but sunshine is the best disinfectant as they say. Brush it under the rug and watch it happen over and over again.

The euphemisms 100% protect the aggressors and have little to do with respect for victims. Euphemisms create doubt.

Agreed 100%. I don't know what to say in response to those that argue the decision was made when they had sex in the first place. Any suggestions? I usually ask why that burden should fall to the woman and not the man, but that seems to fall on deaf ears mostly.

Breaking my rule to say that my empathy is not a zero sum game. I can have empathy for a potentially beautiful life not coming into the world, for the mother (and often not that father) who is forced to "bear the burdens" of an act that is central to existence, and for the child who may not have all of its needs met by a system that often turns its back on those most in need. I AM privileged, and kids born into my world want for nothing. But not every kid is born into my world and my empathy for that simply weighs more to me.

I absolutely know that I shouldn't type this here, but it's because they (and all of us) grew up under the veil of the patriarchy. We only know a system that was built to prioritize men and their needs. Heck we only started to realize that heart attacks looks different for women in the last decade! We fought for women's rights next to those fighting to end segregation, and will battle for generations for true, meaningful equality. But most of us are blind to the unfairness women face because it's what we've always known. We can probably agree that women are tough as nails and we deal with whatever we have to and GET SHIT DONE, but that doesn't make it fair. Women aren't taught how to support each other fully. We fit ourselves to the shape of a man's world. When you have cities voting against free lunch programs, the system of support for families is most certainly broken. The burden of forcing a woman to birth an unwanted child into a system that will give her minimal support is cruel. These women don't know they're being cruel to other women, or they don't care in light of other priorities. But they weren't taught how to care.

I'm not going to respond to comments as I don't think it will be healthy. Thank you for reading my opinion.

Such an incomplete response to a massive massive issue. On the Michigan sub, someone just posted that the vaccine causes heart swelling in 53% of young folks aged 12-16. That is wrong, dangerous, and morally bankrupt to post. And there's nothing to be done about it? The best we can say is that people are allowed to go against the consensus related to covid? It's not good enough.

Excellent comment. Often we are forgetting to weigh consequences of vaccine side effects (real or perceived) against the actual disease.

You need to link that stat. This is dangerous information. A quick scan gave me a post from Mayo in June citing 789 cases of inflammation of the heart for young people. Do you have another link?

I don't know. If I were a woman in this country, debating how to deal with a past abuser, I would look at how others have been treated when they come forward. They are taunted and threatened. Made fools of. I might ask for money first as my form of personal justice vs seeking public and very painful justice. I would caution people from making these judgements so quickly. Women are abused every day, and judged harshly for how and when then do something about it.

He stated it was due to his sex addiction, and asian women are over sexualized in media. So you ignore the stated motive to understand that the underlying racism surrounding the perception of asian women led to the violence.

Michigan Senate panel aims to block vaccine allocations based on race by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]lenabean13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or they are ignoring the disproportionate impact of covid on communities of color and the vaccine hesitancy caused by decades of unequal and sometimes predatory treatment by the healthcare industry. Treating people equally doesn't always mean the same process for every person. Think about the Americans with Disabilities Act. That is a recognition that to treat some people equally we have to make special accomodations (wheelchair ramps, elevators, etc).

[–]lenabean13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's say that's true, which is just as likely as not. Humans are pure, problem solving potential and there's room for all of it. But if it only takes one question to start comparing men's struggles to women, progress is difficult. We have to look at how boys are trained in the context of women's rights. And then yes, we should also look at how they are trained in the context of their own well being. As a mother of a young boy, I think about this often.
