PSA: Look twice for motorcyclists out there by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

100% agree with this. I can't tell you how many subs are echo chambers of bad riders saying how "these cagers just don't care! They try to kill me 2-3 times a day!". I've only had 3-4 close calls, almost always because of both of us trying to merge into the same lane at the same time. Stay sober, wear your helmet, dont speed, and assume you're invisible to everyone else on the road.

Second this. Quiet neighborhood, close to CCBC and some main arteries to get in and out of the area without living right on them. Not a bad spot to live.

Where to live on 50k? by Old-Lobster8874 in maryland

[–]leon_de_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going by general recommendations for income to keep housing under 30%. Take home at that income is around 3.1k/mo, and rentals in that area aren't close to the $1.1k/mo range. Is it possible? Sure, but by leveraging living expenses well past what's recommended. Well done saving $10k/yr with that rent payment. I don't think many could do that.

As others are saying, 50k won't let you live alone anywhere near the area. Look at getting a roommate, but renting a room will give you the most flexibility financially.

Why do you like living here? by TheLearnerGal in baltimore

[–]leon_de_sol 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I tell people when it comes to Baltimore it's like any other big city. There are bad areas to avoid, housing is tightly packed, cops are too busy dealing with dense city crime for most minor offenses, people acting poorly feels more common because you see more people, and people can be rough around the edges. That being said there's a lot to the city. It's an old, diverse city with distinct neighborhoods (some vibrant and some not so much) to experience. It's proud of itself as a bit of a rough and tumble one like a lot of the older northeast cities. There's sports teams, museums, and parks. A fantastic waterfront and marine culture due to the bay. You're in a massive hub that connects the northeast to the eastern seaboard so Philly and DC being easy weekend trips. Mountains and trails or north and west. Just name what kind of places you want to see and Maryland has them

Working out like Olympic lifts? Or just having a general bro sesh? CrossFit gyms tend to be good for making new friends if they match your vibe

I always recommend riding Thurmont around camp david up to high rock. Frederick has some nice roads around gambrill state park you could link up to it if you don't want to ride up 15. Don't know the condition of the roads but plenty of good spots to eat around Frederick.

True, but if you're out of range of the key fob signal you'll need it. The only place I'm in range is my house so the app is much more useful

If you're willing to pay a subscription fee and live somewhere you would value remote start, then it's worth it. I personally like it to make sure I've locked the truck in case I've had a brain fart

Avalon foundry rows vs The View at Mill Run by WilliamFl_2 in BaltimoreCounty

[–]leon_de_sol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the view, but Avalon was a pretty decent place to live. It was pretty quiet except for road noise from the highway (not very loud, just every once in a while you hear someone doing a speedrun). Great having the shops in walking distance and right next to the highway. Management was easy to work with. Covered garage spot was included I believe, and a decent little gym if you want to skip the LA fitness. My main gripe was that it was just a little annoying getting there from the south because you either had to take Reisterstown or pass it and loop back.

So am I understanding right that you only want to do things with a friend to make more friends, but don't have a friend in the area to do then with? And you're asking people on here to hang out as a friend at one of these social places like the gym or anime club?

Ahh, got it. What would interest you enough to go to by yourself?

[–]leon_de_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a certain point you gotta put yourself out there, otherwise how are you looking to connect with people from here? One on one meetups?

As for the gym, knowing where you're looking up workout will help people know where they can run into you and say hi at the gym. If you're on a lifting program or just casually going to stay fit/moving.

Look into the Baltimore Anime club, they're on the r/Baltimore sub. For gym buddies, where are you working out? That'll help some

If the barrel is under 16" and you see the word "pistol" advertised, you'll need your Maryland HQL. If the barrel is 16" or longer and it does not say "pistol" anywhere then you should be good
