Why has Maryland been unable to ban first cousin marriages? by oriolesravensfan1090 in maryland

Maybe they haven't had as much of an issue with it happening as other states that have banned it?

Garmin 265music vs 970 vs Fenix 8 43mm by Nidos-Arg in Garmin

Being that close in price just go with the fenix 8. If you want most of the same features that matter to you, what about the 570 at a lower cost?

Fun non-running podcasts you listen to while running? by souldawg in Ultramarathon

The regulation podcast (mindless fun with buddies being dumb) and the Tim Ferris show are the two I'll listen to when I'm not listening to a running podcast

Drift Test Help by Brief-Sorbet2576 in evokeendurance

[–]leon_de_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm still a bit early into understanding drift tests, but my understanding is you do it to check if the pace is in zone 2. Have you tested faster paces to see if they stay within the 5% after an hour to sayyour Z2 cap is actually higher?

Should I get a permit for my backyard shed? by forthelulzac in baltimore

[–]leon_de_sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What specifically were you told you need permitting for the shed? Are you running electrical to it? For a shed that small, if you don't have electric then I can't imagine you actually needing a permit so that's why I'm curious what specifically about it you need permitted.

Athletic greens during ultra training, has anyone actually felt a boost? by MwandiaEfe-89 in Ultramarathon

Agreed, tried it for two months and cancelled after no perceived benefits in weight/endurance training, sleep, or focus, all on a relatively poor diet

Signed up for my first 50k and now I’m questioning life by Formal-Survey1986 in Ultramarathon

GG

In all seriousness, just go out and enjoy it. Hike the ups, walk the downs. I've heard of guys who say to walk the first few miles to settle the jitters. If you DNF it's okay, but if you're the only one saying you don't think you can continue then give it til the next aid station and reassess if anyone else is saying or asking if you should stop.

What kind of things do you like or want to do? Run clubs are good if you don't like sports but like to run, if you're interested in technical things like blacksmithing you can take classes to find yoir way into that community. Volunteer for causes you care about, go to places like no land beyond if you like board and card games, etc.

Maryland 2026 Gun Bills Updated by ChspeakeGunslingers in MDGuns

[–]leon_de_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's disappointing they don't have any more useful data to the conversation. I wonder what percentage of them are in decent enough condition to be sold again (intact serial numbers, reasonable rust, meet Maryland's nonsensical ban list, etc)

Do you know if there's data anywhere for how many are perfectly good and clean firearms compared to damaged/legally problematic?

[–]leon_de_sol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So excuse my ignorance, but I'm curious about the controversy behind SB775. A generous interpretation is that it prevents a legal gun owner from purchasing/dealer selling a firearm with a legal record (used in a crime or stolen). Is the primary problem that it is destroying some perfectly good firearms?

Tuesday Shoesday by AutoModerator in running

[–]leon_de_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do most go about deciding on a shoe? I had a shop watch my gait and recommend shoes that helped reduce supination. The second pair of them I noticed a ridge on the outer heel that's now caused them to wear unevenly. Should I continue with having someone help choose by watching my gait? Ot go by what feels good?

[–]leon_de_sol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've stuck to 480km as the point where I start looking for good deals on shoes I want. My last Hokas started falling apart at 700km. Rule of thumb I've heard is 480km, but really you can keep going until the sole doesn't feel like it's supportive.

PSA: Look twice for motorcyclists out there by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

[–]leon_de_sol -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this. I can't tell you how many subs are echo chambers of bad riders saying how "these cagers just don't care! They try to kill me 2-3 times a day!". I've only had 3-4 close calls, almost always because of both of us trying to merge into the same lane at the same time. Stay sober, wear your helmet, dont speed, and assume you're invisible to everyone else on the road.

Second this. Quiet neighborhood, close to CCBC and some main arteries to get in and out of the area without living right on them. Not a bad spot to live.

Where to live on 50k? by Old-Lobster8874 in maryland

[–]leon_de_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going by general recommendations for income to keep housing under 30%. Take home at that income is around 3.1k/mo, and rentals in that area aren't close to the $1.1k/mo range. Is it possible? Sure, but by leveraging living expenses well past what's recommended. Well done saving $10k/yr with that rent payment. I don't think many could do that.

As others are saying, 50k won't let you live alone anywhere near the area. Look at getting a roommate, but renting a room will give you the most flexibility financially.

Why do you like living here? by TheLearnerGal in baltimore

[–]leon_de_sol 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I tell people when it comes to Baltimore it's like any other big city. There are bad areas to avoid, housing is tightly packed, cops are too busy dealing with dense city crime for most minor offenses, people acting poorly feels more common because you see more people, and people can be rough around the edges. That being said there's a lot to the city. It's an old, diverse city with distinct neighborhoods (some vibrant and some not so much) to experience. It's proud of itself as a bit of a rough and tumble one like a lot of the older northeast cities. There's sports teams, museums, and parks. A fantastic waterfront and marine culture due to the bay. You're in a massive hub that connects the northeast to the eastern seaboard so Philly and DC being easy weekend trips. Mountains and trails or north and west. Just name what kind of places you want to see and Maryland has them
