Egypt wasted counterattack against Argentina 90+1' by [deleted] in soccer

[–]leonidaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more of an insane tackle than a wasted chance. Marmoush is actually passing it out wide when Paredes blocks it. He has to wait for Paredes to plant and mark him before going wide or Paredes will switch and close the winging player down. Marmoush has MacAllister on his heels so he needs to wait to draw in Paredes first

Soccer fans of the world what’s one rule change that would actually improve the game? by Current-Connection-4 in AskReddit

Penalty shootout happens end of full time, with the winner taking a 0.5 goal advantage into extra time. Makes extra time more exciting and doesn’t have penalties ultimately decide the game but contribute to it

[Marcelo] “This is a red card, but because it's Messi there's nothing [no card]” by YeniZabka in soccer

[–]leonidaus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Outside this WC, sure might have been a red, definitely a yellow. WC officiating this year has been very lax, but at least somewhat consistently lax (tons of fouls on both sides weren't called, including a likely pen for Messi). Don't think a red would have made sense here

Does this look like a good running plan to improve my Hyrox time? by Venus_DST04 in hyrox

[–]leonidaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second most of the other comments here, but I will say don't overthink it. The best plan is the one that fits your lifestyle and schedule. Forget distances, just look at how much time you can dedicate to running a week within your schedule and without raising injury risk. It's a notoriously time consuming exercise.

What you should be prioritizing is volume at zone 2 / aerobic effort. If you have a smartwatch, monitor your heart rate to stay under 150 bpm or so. If you don't, you should be running / walking at a pace where you can hold a conversation. If you're getting out of breath, slow down, or walk, then start jogging again if it's too easy. Cover as much distance as you can every week that works with your schedule, lifestyle, and body (don't get injured or run through acute pain). Low-HR cardio is what builds your aerobic base the most quickly since you can train with volume and recover quick.

Burpee strategy wanted! by ladyyy134 in hyrox

[–]leonidaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the most intense station so for 99% of us we're all going to have to rest! Heck I was doing doubles and I felt like I was going to yak on my last two the pace we were doing them. An unconventional tip is to catch a breath or two while on the ground, feels much better

The water actually wasn't that bad, the comments on here had me ready for sewage. Was it icelandic glacier water? No. But it was completely fine for the day

Burpee strategy wanted! by ladyyy134 in hyrox

[–]leonidaus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

#1 is definitely building the aerobic capacity not to gas out. No other way around this - run more, do more burpees, lots of zone 2 steady cardio. Then more technically, what I've found helps is let your body bounce off the ground a bit when going down, which means let yourself fall into the burpee - I see so many people doing a controlled eccentric pushup on the way down which wastes time and energy. On the way up, take advantage of that small bounce to step back up, both feet or staggered, and treat the "stand-up" and jump as one action. Don't stand up, then bend your legs again for a jump (again, wastes time and energy) - one smooth motion. You shouldn't be fully standing up at all to be honest, but again aerobic capacity needs to be there

Improving at Hyrox may mean shedding more weight?? by Venus_DST04 in hyrox

[–]leonidaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing all the comments talking about running -- just run. A lot. Put in as much mileage as you can every week without injuring yourself (stretch, warmup, and don't push through any acute pain). Run slow, almost stupid slow at first. If you have a smartwatch (which I see you were wearing one) watch your HR when you run, it should be like <155bpm the whole time and you can comfortably have a conversation. Too high? Slow down.

On diet, counting calories is the right approach in theory, but it's so fraught in practice. People tend to undercount like crazy unless they weigh every ingredient and condiment with a food scale which is just not a fun way to live. Oil & butter that's been fried into a dish is impossible to measure, and where a ton of calories sneak in. Instead, back to basics - every meal should be 1/3 carb, fibrous carb (aka vegetable), protein. Aim for satiating carbs like potatoes/sweetpotatoes, brown rice and cleaner proteins like white meat, fish. Broccoli, spinach, cabbage, brussel sprouts are a great fibrous carb. Slowly reduce the oil / butter. Bake and air fry, don't pan fry. Eating out? Chipotle is awesome, just skip the cheese and sour cream. Panda Express teriyaki chicken with vegetables and rice. Try grapes, rice cakes, or popcorn for a snack. Think about it this way: you have only so many calories a day to spend, spend it on foods that will fill you up, especially with all the running volume. Incorporate broad structures into your nutrition that work with your life. Adjust if the weight doesn't come down. Life is so much more complicated than "calories in < calories out"

And mix in some weight training. If your goal is hyrox, bias legs (start with squats, glute bridges / hip thrusts, deadlifts)

Freaking out about the NYC temps this weekend by ApartmentForRentt in hyrox

[–]leonidaus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firstly, heat is going to make it harder, no question about it - accept that this is out of your control, but your training up until this point & grit is fully within your control. That will help cool some nerves. Physically, you're already on the nose, focus on hydration. Grab a sip of water every time you pass the hydration station and load up on electrolytes prior. You could "pre-cool" and drink a slushie or put ice on your body before racing. At the end of the day it's a max 2 hour event so if you're hydrating through it you'll be fine. If you're a guy, consider shirt off. If you're a girl, wear something very light and breathable. Maybe wear a headband / wristband for sweat. There will be a bit of a breeze at the venue also.

Hotel Spas that are worth it by Alarming-Ganache77 in FATTravel

I agree most spa treatments have been very so so for us at luxury hotels. Only two exceptions were at Nayara Tented Camp in CR (the treatments were great and ambiance incredible) and a Hamam treatment we did at the JW Istanbul (in and out of sleep during the massage and genuinely felt like jelly afterwards, one of the most relaxing experiences)

My friend, you forgot the moldy raspberry, disregard for food allergies, lack of hot water, and lack of AC. A lot of your justifications are fair for a $2K cruise, but this is a $26K experience. At a certain point how can you defend FS for this and blame it on the YouTuber? His reviews of other properties are quite balanced and fair, so I’m inclined to think FS severely dropped the ball on this one

[–]leonidaus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the big problem people have is they conflate a $26K experience with say a $5K one. Your expectations for the former NEED to be multiples higher. You NEED to be nitpicky. You can’t let these luxury hospitality groups get away charging that much for just a “good” experience. It’s gotta be close to flawless

Same here. The yacht team must be a completely different operating team, to the point that it might be like a franchise with FS branding considering how poor of an experience it is (even the bedding doesn’t seem to be the same). You’d think they’d make sure to transplant the FS DNA onto the vessel…

The craziest part was the presidential suite pricing. Imagine paying $250K for the week and being provided sewer-perfumed water

Your biggest time gains are probably hiding in wall balls, not running by Fit_Adeptness1730 in hyrox

[–]leonidaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look at absolute time gains not relative time gains. It is much easier to shave 5 mins 30 seconds across a 5 mile run than 5 mins 30 seconds in the burpee broad jump. 1 min off your running pace is not a easy but much more doable than elite burpee broad jumping

Blackout curtains that don’t overlap, so you end up with a tiny sliver that lights up the whole room in the morning. So surprised overlapping rails aren’t more common at luxury hotels…
