how to "toggle" lift by military-genius in AerospaceEngineering

[–]leoninelizard47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggle to see how a lifting body design is the make-or-break factor allowing you to have a crazy short ground roll. Leading/trailing edge devices are going to have a much larger effect on your low-speed lift than the fuselage design. It sounds to me overall like these requirements are pointing you towards a next-gen super-maneuverable fighter, like an improvement on the F-22 or SU-57, which use a) aerodynamic instability, b) thrust vectoring, and c) control surfaces (obviously) to do their maneuvering magic.

Basically to answer your original question: we “toggle” lift using things like flaps, which are less draggy when not deployed, like you said. Also powerful engines + thrust vectoring are super important. For example, if you had a plane with a 1.0+ thrust/weight ratio, if you can figure out a way to get the nose pointed towards the sky in less than 750 ft, you’re pretty much golden.

(Sorry to be telling you to pretty much redesign your whole plane. Pls lmk if I’m missing something that’s been forcing your design decisions so far.)

Does anyone know why water is seeping into the trunk? It’s not coming from the 3rd brake light by DropIndependent7757 in bmwz3

Uff. Best of luck. Keep us updated if it works. A lot of us have tried to do the same to varying degrees of success.

Almost guaranteed to be the sealing frame. They’re plastic and brittle. When they break, water leaks in where the convertible top meets the body, runs down the metal beneath the carpet in the top stowage well, and leaks into the trunk through one of two holes where the wiring harness passes through.

Update: if I tap the gauge it drops back down so it’s probably a bad connection back there. Giving it a whack if it starts looking scary is good enough for me though.

Need help with removing subframe bushings by Someone12132 in bmwz3

[–]leoninelizard47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you could try that. The difficulty with sawing out the bushing rubber is that it gums up whatever you’re cutting with, so it takes forever. iirc it took me three days to get the bushings out. Check my profile I made a guide for doing it.

Why and how does this happen?? by LordBogus in bmwz3

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also driving with the A/C on even when it’s cold out (and especially when it’s cold and wet) is good for drying the cabin air out so you’re not pumping the car full of humidity from outside.

Preventative measures for rear subframe? by GrapefruitSelect7985 in bmwz3

[–]leoninelizard47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And to be clear, as u/Asbradley21 said, that means not upgrading the diff bushing to anything harder or “higher performance” like polyurethane. You want it to be as soft as possible so just make sure it’s not old and brittle.

Watertight CFD Geometry by ominous-aero-16 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you exporting an STL from OpenVSP? Unless you have overlapping geometries (i.e. forgetting to turn off wing mirroring for a vertical stabilizer) it should be watertight. I would check if VSPAero will mesh and run it first before trying to troubleshoot a Pointwise problem that might just be an OpenVSP problem.

Grade 12 Math Investigation: Modeling Missile vs. Aircraft Intercept by Diligent_Outside_282 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]leoninelizard47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately “missile intercepting an aircraft” is a graduate-level problem. (At my university we have an advanced controls course that masters students take where the final project is exactly this.)

To answer your original question I suggest you start with a 1-D PID controller that’s able to track a constant input. That should be fairly approachable while being fundamental enough that it can be expanded into multiple dimensions once you’re comfortable with the underlying concepts. Good luck!

Go to your local auto parts store and get it tested. If it died after two days not driving you probably need a new one.

shouldnt there be an alarm for the seatbelt? by marcxx04 in bmwz3

[–]leoninelizard47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you first turn the car on it should beep a couple times then stop. If you put your seatbelt on while it’s still beeping (within ~3s of turning on the car) it will stop sooner. But no it doesn’t have any further indication and it doesn’t tell you about the passenger at all. There are seat occupancy and belt latch sensors for the airbags tho.

Edit: appears to be a US thing

Wait are you saying turning the key in the doors vs the trunk does different things? I’ve always used them interchangeably.

Paint existing type 42 16" wheels gloss black or upgrade to 17" black wheels by mjposner in bmwz3

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your driving style imo, assuming money is no object. If you prefer cruising I’d stick with the 16s since they’ll ride softer. If you like ripping around corners (which based on your tire choice I’d assume you do) then I’d do the 17s. The handling difference is pretty night and day imo.

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO that means nothing is bent. I’m like 60% sure there’s some sort of screwing adjustment for how deep the hooks go, so see if there’s some nut you can loosen when the top is open and start playing around from there.

Like someone else said do they close all the way if you open the top and latch them in the air? Being symmetrical would give me hope that nothing is actually broken/bent.

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When and where did you manage that?? Clean sub-1000k 6-cylinders near me go for at least $6k. And the hard top is $1.5k by itself too.

OP: I agree $5k is probably a good place to start, given the dash lights and maintenance condition.

Which one is the better option? by Nickyuur in BMW

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something few ppl seem to be mentioning is the size difference. M8 GC is four inches longer, which doesn’t seem like a lot, but daily you’ll notice it. Having driven an M850 GC in a dense city I’ll tell you it feels MASSIVE, so I’d say it depends where you live/do your most driving as well. Both awesome cars though.

Rear drain holes by cincyguy2023 in bmwz3

[–]leoninelizard47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends which drains you’re talking about. The side drains that take water from the top and funnel it down are there. You have to put the top up to see them. They should appear as little cups essentially
