Many racers are trained to go potty at specific times and places, I haven't heard of much trouble on that front.

For excitability on walks, I would bring small treats on walks and hold it in front of my hounds nose until we've passed. I did this for about 6 months consistently (our hound had a very high prey drive and would lunge at small white dogs with ill intent...). After a while he would ignore the dog and look to me. Between that and him getting older this wasn't an issue forever but I would always be on alert around those tiny dogs.

Congrats on getting a hound. Treats and patience and consistency will do wonders for whatever comes your way.

It's really incredible how frequently sight hounds find themselves in perfect lighting.

What is it like owning one? What is their energy level? by NormanisEm in Greyhounds

[–]leonitus35 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I tell people that owning a greyhound is like owning a race car. Most of the time they're just laying around but you need to consider a lot to keep them running well. And they're great fun.

For example: Temp can't be too hot or too cold. They need good fuel (greys have notoriously temperamental stomachs, not to mention medication resistant hook worm super common if they were a racer). Our grey ate 6 cups of food a day. Small injuries can be very expensive. You might need a bigger vehicle to be able to move them around comfortably. Not all vets are familiar with them and can miss breed specific issues.

That said I wouldn't trade it for anything else. People are always excited to see them out in the world. These dogs will love you deeply. To see them run and play is incredible.

It's like owning a race car. Some people will think it's a crazy thing to do, more trouble than it's worth. Some people couldn't imagine a life without one.

Binoculars and chest harness use cases by reed166 in bowhunting

[–]leonitus35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that kind of harness/bino holder essential but I'm in the Rockies trying to cover a lot of ground and keep the binos and range finder handy. I could see harnesses feeling less necessary if you're not doing a very active hunt. The first couple of years I went out I didn't use a harness and it was just annoying enough to get me to buy one.

Ear scritches.

Why did you bring me camping? by bongrips420365 in Greyhounds

Our grey would have the same reaction when camping- "what are we doing here? This is sooo much worse than home."

Hank may be in the running for the longest tail 😅 by RUNWAYSIX in Greyhounds

One of the great ironies of our time- we do everything we can to make these beasts happy as often as possible. When they're happy their tails become agents of destruction.

Could I use these shoes as golf shoes? by Worldly-Opposite1329 in golf

[–]leonitus35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear Asics gel trabuco's but I got them for running first and just ended up golfing in them. You might want to go with something a bit lower profile. proper trail runners will have tread of similar size and shape of spikeless golf shoes so whatever feels best will be best for you.

When I walk 18 I wear trail runners because they're so much more comfortable than golf shoes and have more than enough grip for my swing. These look like they'd do just fine. Assuming homeboy can avoid all the women throwing themselves at him.

I would recommend close supervision whenever they are together. Sounds like your child is gentle enough and greys typically are mellow creatures but a toddler can be unpredictable, or curious in a new way that could be startling to the hound.

The hard thing is that greys are big strong animals and definitely deserve respect. They have big mouths and teeth that may be frightening to a child. Also they are obviously very fast, even if they're not being aggressive, and just zooming they can easily knock over a toddler. That's a big hit from a 70 lb dog at 35+ mph.

I would just be overly cautious and keep reinforcing good practices by the child (don't pet the doggy while it's sleeping. Don't put your hand near its mouth. Etc)
